Port
597633 MARTINEZ GASSIOT VINTAGE PORT   1997   $  69.00

Btld. 1999  (S)  750 mL

The brilliant 1997 vintage was almost universally declared by all the Port houses. Producers, such a Martinez Gassiot, produced superior efforts that will both reward current consumption (decanted) or further ageing of 5-10 years. In Wine Spectator's 1999 review, they called it "burly, blackstrap Port with grip", scoring it a 90-94.

Dessert Wine

McLaren Vale, South Australia  (S)  750 mL

943050 D'ARENBERG 'VINTAGE FORTIFIED' SHIRAZ  2002   $  17.95

McLaren Vale, South Australia  (S)  375 mL

Chester Osborne and his team at d'Arenberg have been making first-class port-style wines for decades. As with Port, a neutral grape spirit is added to the still fermenting wine, arresting the process. The wines are then barrel-aged for a short time in barrel, 'Vintage Fortified' is then bottled in the same year as harvest. Enjoy with rich cheeses, nuts or desserts such as pecan pie.

Chardonnay
573147 MALIVOIRE CHARDONNAY (V)     $  22.00

VQA Niagara Peninsula  (D)  750 mL

From VINTAGES Essentials Collection - Always Available!

Tasting note: The new vintage [2003] of Malivoire's impressive Chardonnay comes with a new twist-a screw-cap closure that should maintain the wine's freshness and intensity. Nosing and tasting this dry wine called to mind a mix of sweet stuff-butterscotch, Sweet Tart candies and crème brulée. The palate offers a well-rounded, slightly oily texture, with nice core of tropical fruit and a lingering finish, which is where that crème brulée character comes in. Showcasing richness and drinkability at this young stage, this is a wine for anyone who feels Chardonnay has lost its appeal.  Score - **** (out of 5).  (Christopher Waters, Vines, March/April 2005)

Tasting note: Winemaker Darryl Brooker blended toasty and complex barrel fermented Chardonnay with peach and tropical fruit flavoured Chardonnay fermented strictly in stainless steel tanks to produce a well-rounded and nicely focused white. The oak aging imparts a nice spice character and adds to the impressive length. I expect this wine will really hit its stride a year from now and drink nicely over the next two or three years.  (Christopher Waters, Vines, Summer 2005)

This inaugural vintage has already walked away with the 'Crush Wine Bar & Restaurant Riesling Dry Award' Gold Medal at the 2005 Ontario Wine Awards.

Tasting note: This is the first vintage of this wine, which is produced from the winery's own vineyards. Although it's dry, there is clear perceived sweetness, with quite lush sweet fruit notes balanced off by pungent lime and other citrus notes. The acidity is good and there's a nice, long, clean finish. Well made and a very good partner to spicy Thai cuisine.  Score - **** (out of 5).  (Rod Phillips, www.winecurrent.com, April 2005)

Gewurztraminer
542522 MALIVOIRE GEWURZTRAMINER  2004   $  26.00

VQA Niagara Peninsula  (D)  750 mL

A standard bearer for both quality and environmental responsibility, Malivoire does not use chemical insecticides, herbicides or fertilizers in any of its vineyards, and the 'Estate Vineyard' is currently deemed 'in transition' in the organic certification process. This classic beauty would be the perfect match for spicy curry dishes.

Tasting note: In the late 90's, Malivoire produced some of Ontario's most intense Gewurz from old vines located on their Moira vineyard. That was before severe winter cold did away with them. The 04, made from maturing vines, is a return to that style. Loads of rose water, honey, lychee and peach. The mouthfeel is viscous and rich, with a long spicy/creamy finish. Drink over the next 3 years.  Score - 90.  (Evan Saviolidis, www.winesavvy.ca, July 2005 )

New to the VINTAGES Essentials Collection - Always Available!

Tasting note: Ontario is still finding itself stylistically with his grape. Some go for New Zealand's intense, vibrant style, others for a cooler gooseberry, Loire style. This bridges the two with a nose of green peppery, gooseberry, grapefruit and black pepper. Mid-weight, fairly smooth and soft mid-palate, then a dry grapefruit, bitter finish. The reputation of Ontario's wine regions has grown so much that not only are winemakers from around the world are taking notice, in some cases they are moving here. In the late 1970s, founder and winemaker, Paul Bosc Sr., was among the first to plant exclusively noble grape varieties, like Pinot Noir, in Canada. For wines such as Pinot, Bosc looked long and hard to find the best soils and climate that were comparable to Burgundy in his native France. He obviously was successful, because today Château des Charmes produces some of Ontario's finest Pinot Noirs The 'Estate Bottled' version is produced in small lots with grapes sourced from 100% estategrown Pinot. The wines are then aged in Allier oak barrels.

Tasting note: Light to medium ruby garnet with fine Pinot aromas, including sour cherry, blueberry, dried herbs, earth and a touch of strawberry. This dry wine is very well-strucutred with crisp acids and fine grained tannins surrounded by good fruit notes. Medium-bodied with a medium long finish, it is very enjoyable now with stuffed veal tenderloin or roast beef, but it will also reward short to mid-term cellaring (2-4 years).  (VINTAGES panel, July 2005)

McLaren Vale, South Australia  (XD)  750 mL

Tasting note: Very drinkable, harmonious and approachable grenache without the excessively confected flavours of so many, and with rare cellaring potential for this variety in Australia. McLaren Vale, South Australia  (XD)  750 mL

This is easily d'Arenberg's most famous and sought after wine. Consistently rich and complex, it has claimed its rightful place as one of Australia's iconic wines. D'Arenberg sources only the best Shiraz fruit from the McLaren Vale's oldest producers to make their flagship wine. Although no reviews were available at press time it should be noted that Robert Parker Jr. has given the previous eight vintages of this wine an average score of 94. A worthy addition to any cellar, it can last for decades.

McLaren Vale/Southern Fleurieu, South Australia  (XD)  750 mL

Tasting note: I was knocked-out by the quality of the 2002 ... It is a serious effort with an inky/ruby/purple color, and a big, perfumed bouquet of vanilla, cedar, black currants, licorice, and earth. Medium to full-bodied, powerful, and rich, with high extract, moderately high tannin, and a long finish, it will be even better with another 1-2 years of bottle age, and should keep for 12-14 years.  Score - 91.  (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2004)

Wine of the Month
937276 GRANT BURGE 'CAMERON VALE' CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2002   $  19.95

Barossa Valley, South Australia  (XD)  750 mL

This deeply delicious wine is made from fruit sourced from vines that are over 30 years old. While the grapes' pedigree runs deep, the winemaker's history runs deeper. Grant is the fifth generation winemaker in the Burge family and the most successful to date. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the family's winemaking history. The maturity and experience of the winemaker and his vines shows well in this complex, full bodied Cab. Heathcote, Victoria  (XD)  750 mL

Winner of a Gold Medal at the 2004 Royal Adelaide Wine Show.

Tasting note: Here's a flavour explosion just waiting to happen. While it ticks, it seems shy, concentrated and massive, with occasional begrudging leaks of blackstrap licorice, tar and crème de cassis. As it airs, its amazing intensity and density seem to multiply. It's huge but in careful balance, promising a very grand future indeed. Taltarni's back, and Heathcote rocks!  Score - 94.  (Philip White, Adelaide Advertiser, Nov. 24, 2004)

Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, WO Walker Bay  (D)  750 mL

Sumaridge is the baby among Hemel en Aarde Valley wineries, joining older neighbours such as Hamilton Russell and Bouchard Finlayson. Sumaridge crafts their wines in a stone building fitted out with all mod cons. They respect tradition by using hand picking, wood treatment in barrel, and minimum intervention during winemaking. You can expect cherry and plum aromas and flavours from this Pinotage as well as some dry, dusty tannins while in its youth.
