This will not be the year for tannic monster wines, but dense wines with softer, finer tannins and lovely fruit will be the rule."   BONNY DOON 'ANCIENT VINES' CARIGNANE  2004

In order to retain as much fruit freshness as possible, the wines were not oak-aged, fined or filtered. Expect aromas and flavours of ripe plum, blackberry and a forest floor. Enjoy with rotini pasta and a spicy sausage meat sauce.

Winery founder Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle launched the single vineyard range 'Cuvée Alexandre' in tribute to her great-grandfather Alexandre. While the Marnier Lapostolle family may be best known for the liqueur Grand Marnier, they also have a long history of winemaking in their native France and currently own Château de Sancerre in the Loire. This concentrated and well-structured Chardonnay is one of four wines from the 'Cuvée Alexandre' range being released this month.

Tasting Note: Muscular and brutish now, with thick dark cocoa and toast dominating the blackberry and currant fruit. Big, brawny finish is loaded, but very tight. Tasting Note: .It is very expressive aromatically and quite deeply flavored, with rich, concentrated fruit notes reminiscent of plums and dark berries. With well-balanced oak edging and lovely undertones of cocoa and vanilla, this is both complex and symmetrical. It is also remarkably stable, remaining fresh and expressive for days after opening. DOMAINE DES GRANGES MÂCON-CHAINTRÉ  2004
AC, Château de Chaintré
(Jean-Paul Paquet, Vitic.)

Southern Burgundy's Mâcon region is a great place to find well-priced wines. It experiences warmer weather than the Côte d'Or to the north and tends to produce fuller-bodied white wines. It has long attracted big names like Verget, Domaine Leflaive and Duboeuf. This 100% Chardonnay offers a combination of minerally accents and fresh, tropical fruitiness (orange, pineapple) in a soft, easy-drinking wine - perfect for Christmas turkey.

From near extinction to rising star, Viognier is the come-back kid of wines. Condrieu, in the Northern Rhône, is the original source of Viognier, but at prices as steep as the slopes they grow on. Credit then wine growers in the Midi for making it much more accessible and deliciously so. Segond de Dufort is the second wine of second growth, Durfort-Vivens. Second wines are great alternatives to the 'grand vin'. They require less ageing and cash layout. Under the ownership of Gonzague Lurton, this winery has undergone a renaissance since he took over in 1992. Look for the typical Margaux elegance. A good starter wine for those new to Bordeaux.

Loire Valley red wines are generally considered 'drink now' in most years. However, the unusually hot summer of 2003 helped red grapes to fully ripen, resulting in wines of greater depth and firmer tannins - perfect for ageing and futher development. Made from 100% Cabernet Franc, talented 38-year-old François Audebert has crafted a sophisticated wine that sports floral, cherry and blackberry notes, medium body and good grip and length.   CHÂTEAU DE NAGES 'CUVÉE JOSEPH TORRES'  2001
AC Costières de Nîmes

Energetic and switched on, Michel Gassier has been a positive driving force in the fringe Rhône area of Costières de Nîmes. His 100ha domaine . turns out stylish, well-structured wines capable of showing two phases - springy, warm fruit, then more variety of cooked flavours, leather and spice if left to age for 4-5 years. The pure Syrah Joseph Torres is young, oak-raised for a year, a dark wine with roasted, intense black fruits, and likely to live 10 years. (John Livingstone Learmonth, Decanter, Feb. 11, 2004)

Tasting Note: Medium red-ruby. Aromatic nose combines currant, smoked meat and chocolate. Fatter and sweeter than the Vacqueyras, with spicy red fruit flavors complicated by iron and tobacco.   CHÂTEAU LACAPELLE CABANAC  2002
AC Cahors, Tradition
(Thierry Simon et Philipe Verax, Prop.)

Malbec may be Argentina's calling card, but its roots are deeply entrenched in Southwest France's Cahors region where it enjoyed its first success. Cahors is one the great undiscovered, ageable wines. In its youth, it is tightly tannic with the fruit waiting patiently beneath. Given a chance to rest in a cellar (usually 4-8 years after vintage), and these Malbecs can be spectacular with red fruit and light gamey notes. Choose this as a great addition to any serious wine cellar.

CASA DE SANTAR TINTO SUPERIOR  2001
DOC Dão

Dão is sometimes likened to Portugal's Burgundy. It's not because of any physical similarity between the regions, but because of the style of wine. Like red Burgundy, good Dão doesn't rely on power for its effect, but instead aims at subtlety and finesse, a cause helped by the good natural acidity of the grapes. These wines range from light, peppery and spicy to more full bodied and fruity, but there is almost always a lovely suppleness and brightness to the fruit. (Jaime Goode, wineanorak.com, May 2004)
