Scotch Whisky
THE BALVENIE PORTWOOD SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT  1991
Btld. 2005

Tasting Note: This Portwood malt is the perfect embodiment of a late fall day. The colour is a beautiful copper/orange, the aromas suggest dried flowers (roses, lilac), dried fruit (apricot, peach), wood smoke and burning leaves. On the palate is it dry, quite fruity and floral with a nice hint of smoke. Medium-bodied with a long, warm finish. Not surprisingly, this is the ideal cool autumn day malt.  (David Churchill, VINTAGES, Oct. 2005)

595637    750 mL    $74.95

THE BALVENIE SINGLE BARREL 15 YEARS OLD
Speyside Single Malt, Btld. July 14, 2005
(William Grant & Sons Int'L Ltd)

Each cask forms a limited edition of hand-numbered bottles - there will be a maximum of 350 bottles from any one cask - so each bottle is unique and unrepeatable. Each cask is subtly different, however, The Balvenie Malt Master selects for bottling only those casks that have the essential characteristics of The Balvenie Single Barrel - particularly honey, vanilla and oaky notes. (www.thebalvenie.com)

366963    750 mL    $89.95

GLENGOYNE CASK STRENGTH 12 YEARS OLD HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT
(Lang Brothers)

Tasting Note: That classic clean maltiness which Glengoyne is known for is certainly in this whisky. With the addition of some water, the whisky really opens up, becoming fragrant, fruity (cherry pits, apples), along with hints of anise and almonds. A nice effort from the new owners.  (Malt Advocate, First Quarter, 2005)

670570    700 mL    $89.95

GLENGOYNE 'SCOTTISH OAK WOOD FINISH' 15 YEARS OLD HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT
Limited Edition
(Lang Brothers)

Traditionally, Scotch is aged in second use American Bourbon or Spanish Sherry barrels, but Glengoyne has gone to the trouble of ageing their Single Malt in Scottish oak barrels. They feel it gives their unpeated Scotch another level of flavour and complexity.

670554    700 mL    $118.95

'THE MACALLAN' CASK STRENGTH HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT

Tasting Note: [The Cask Strength] bears no age statement, but contains whiskies primarily in the 10-12 year old range. As you will discover, it tastes a few years older than its age. And there's more maturity and depth of flavor when compared to the 10 year old cask strength bottling in the UK.  Score - 92.  (Malt Advocate, Spring 2004)

608604    750 mL    $95.95

Brandy
  SANCHEZ ROMATE 'CARDINAL MENDOZA' BRANDY
Spain

Tasting Note: Deep espresso coffee brown colour with aromas of spun sugar, dried plum, chocolate and coffee bean. Dry, ripe, rich, round and smooth as glass. Full-bodied with a long, lush, deeply delicious finish. A contemplation brandy.  (David Churchill, VINTAGES, Sept. 2004)

185280    750 mL    $89.95

VECCHIA ROMAGNA RISERVA 10 YEARS OLD
Italy
(Buton)

Grapes that make an average wine can be turned into a tremendous brandy. For this one, Buton uses the neutral Trebbiano di Romagna - the ugly duckling that becomes a swan. Enjoy it from a snifter after a long afternoon stroll.

396036    750 mL    $45.95

Cognac
DELAMAIN 'PALE & DRY' GRANDE CHAMPAGNE COGNAC XO
1er Cru du Cognac

Made exclusively with noble Grande Champagne region cognacs, Delamain's 'Pale & Dry' is aged for at least 25 years. It is known for its complex aroma profile, including citrus, acacia blossom, caraway and spring flowers. The bottle is a replica of the first bottles used by the house in the 19th century.

107490    700 mL    $99.95

Eau-de-Vie
  JOSEF HOERMANN OBSTBRAND APPLE/PEAR EAU-DE-VIE
Germany

Tasting Note: This eau-de-vie offers something a little different with an intense duet of apple-pear fragrance and highlights of gummy sweetness on the nose. The texture envelops and the spice engages, with the spirit finishing fiery and dry.  (Patricia Noonan, Wine Access, 'First In Line E-Report', Dec. 2003)

460386    500 mL    $23.95

Grappa
DISTILLERIE POLI 'PO' GRAPPA DI MOSCATO
with Gift Tube, Veneto, Italy

Tasting Note: A clear, floral-sweet muscat based bouquet with citrus notes. Ethereal feel with delicate spiced heat into the finish. Decidedly feminine. Elegant.  Score - 92.  (Patricia Noonan, Wine Access 'First In Line E-Report', Dec. 2003)

  New at VINTAGES
NEMIROFF 'LEX' VODKA
Ukraine

'Lex' Vodka is stunning inside and out. The vodka is perfect for sipping, chilled, as you would a fine cognac or scotch. The bottle is 'architecturally' stunning bottle looking like something out of the Art Deco era.

  NEMIROFF PREMIUM VODKA

MIAGKOV HONEY & PEPPER VODKA
Odessa, Ukraine

As the Ukraine's premium vodka producer, Miagkov creates a full range of vodka and flavoured vodkas including this Honey and Pepper. They are the sponsor for the Ukraine's national football team, and at a recent event, they introduced this cocktail:

1 1/2 oz (45 mL) Miagkov Honey & Pepper Vodka
4 oz (125 mL) apple juice
fresh basil leaves
juice from half a lime
1/2 tsp (2 mL) sugar
ice.

Fill a shaker with the ingredients. Shake until blended, ensuring that the sugar has dissolved. Pour into a tall glass.

658021    700 mL    $23.95

  MIAGKOV PREMIUM FLAVOURED VODKA
Odessa, Ukraine

Vodka has its origin in the Ukraine. Ukrainians call it 'horika'. Our term, vodka, comes from the Russian practice of adding diminutives to the end of a name: 'voda' means 'water', so 'vodka' is 'my beloved little water'. This 'beloved little water' is the perfect cocktail vodka for this upcoming Holiday season.

658039    700 mL    $23.95

  New at VINTAGES
NEMIROFF 'HONEY PEPPER' VODKA
Ukraine

The infusion of honey and pepper to Nemiroff's peerless Vodka is an inspired touch. These two, the hot and the sweet, are opposites that attract. At first the fire from the peppers comes to the fore, within an instant the cool sweet tones of the honey 'calms' it down and balances it out. Enjoy this flavoured vodka in marinades, sauces or even stuffing.

670489    750 mL    $22.95

Liqueur
  POLI AMARO
with Glass, Italy
(Dist. Poli)

Each company that produces an Amaro bitters keeps the recipe a well-guarded secret. No one wants their precise combination of herbs, spices, fruits, etc. to fall into a competitor's hands. Poli is no exception. This Amaro is best enjoyed as an after dinner digestif, especial following the generous meals we enjoy this time of year.

Madeira
  New at VINTAGES
KOPKE 10 YEAR OLD 'OLD RESERVE' MADEIRA

Tasting Note: The medium amber colour is indicative of its age. The impressive array of aromas include caramel, orange peel, dried pear, smoky oak and earth tones. This medium in sweetness Madeira is quite round and lush in the mouth balanced out nicely by the oak tones and hints of acid. Medium full-bodied with a long finish.  (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2005)

Port
  VINTAGES Cellar Selection
COCKBURN'S QUINTA DOS CANAIS VINTAGE PORT  2001
Btld. 2003

Tasting Note: The blackest, inkiest wine of the tasting, it's incredibly rich and dense. Round and mouth filling, packed with mixed berries and chocolate. The vintage's flesh is obscuring the wine's structure for the moment, but this should age magnificently. Drink 2011-2040.  Score - 93.  (Wine Enthusiast, March 1, 2004)

677807    (S)   750 mL    $49.95

DELAFORCE 'HIS EMINENCE'S CHOICE' 10-YEAR-OLD TAWNY PORT
Matured in Oak Casks, Btld. 2005

Tasting Note: Very aromatic and enticing. This is very rich, with toffee and caramel aromas and a fruity undertone. Full-bodied and very sweet, with an almond, candied fruit and light fruitcake aftertaste. Drink now.  Score - 89.  (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, Sept. 15, 2003)

  'DOW'S' CRUSTED PORT
Btld. 2000
(Silva & Cosens)

Crusted Port has Vintage Port flavours at everyday prices. It is a blend of usually two recent vintages, aged two or three years in cask before bottling and then aged at least a further three years in bottle prior to release. Crusted Ports are so named because they throw a crust or sediment in the bottle; decanting is recommended. Crusted may be enjoyed now, no need to wait.

114868    (S)   750 mL    $30.95

  GRAHAM'S MALVEDOS VINTAGE PORT  1998
Btld. 2000

To 'call' a vintage port year is a producer's stamp of approval; a declaration that what they have produced is exceptional. In some years only a few Port houses 'call the year', as Graham's did in 1998. The wines produced from their single Malvedos vineyard were superb and therefore worthy of the designation. The one fantastic advantage to sampling ports from vintages not universally declared is that they are frequently much more approachable in their youth than generally called years. Ageable for 4+ years or more, this can also be enjoyed tonight, decanted, with mature cheeses and nuts.

672238    (S)   375 mL    $26.95

672246    (S)   750 mL    $51.95

Dessert Wine
  New at VINTAGES
MASSANDRA RED DESSERT WINE  1999
Pivdennoberezhniy, Crimea, Ukraine

The wines of Massandra are steeped in history. Located near Yalta, the winery was built for Tsar Nicholas II. Lacking a proper storage area, local miners were called in to dig the three layers of cool, humid cellars. From then until now, the majority of its famous wines are fortified. At the Yalta Conference of 1945, the Allied leaders, Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt, enjoyed Massandra's wines during their evening meals. Taste a bit of history with this unique, deeply delicious dessert wine.
