Scotch Whisky
AN CNOC 12 YEARS OLD HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT

(Inver House Distillers)

An Cnoc is Scottish Gaelic for "the hill". Established in 1894, the distiller made scotches exclusively for blends until a new owner, Inver House, took over in the 1990s and began issuing official bottlings such as this.

Tasting Note: A dessert malt? . Smooth, creamy vanilla notes. Very soft knot of fruit. Very drinkable and enjoyable.  (Michael Jackson, Malt Whisky Companion, 5th Edition, 2004)

358341    700 mL    $54.95

ISLE OF ARRAN DISTILLERS 'ROBERT BURNS' ARRAN ISLAND SINGLE MALT

981084    700 mL    $ 48.95

THE BALVENIE 25 YEARS OLD 'SINGLE BARREL' HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT

(William Grant & Sons)

936559    750 mL    $179.95

SPEYBURN 10 YEARS OLD SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT

(Inver House Distillers)

"Pretty as a picture: both the growing range of whiskies (flowery and fruity) and the distillery (a much photographed Victorian classic, masked by trees in a deep, sweeping valley). (Michael Jackson, Malt Whisky Companion, 5th Edition, 2004). This 'flowery and fruity' Scotch is perhaps the perfect libation to enjoy while watching one of a handful of brilliant Scottish made or set films, such as Local Hero, Whisky Galore, I Know Where I'm Going or Trainspotting.

358333    700 mL    $49.95

  WARRE'S LBV TRADITIONAL PORT  1995
Late Bottled Vintage, Btld. 1999

Carefully selected from the finest wines of a very good year, this Port is aged in oak casks for 4 years before being bottled without fining or filtration. This ensures that, as with Vintage Port, the fruit concentration is retained. Once bottled, [it is] left to mature for a further 5 years in Warre's own cellars before [release]. It is this prolonged ageing in its own bottle that gives this particular LBV so much outstanding style and complexity. (www.warre.com). As it is not filtered or fined, this wine should be decanted.

673871    (S)   750 mL    $32.95

Miscellaneous Wine

HUTCHISON'S SPICED GINGER WINE
Scotland
(Aberfoyle & Knight)

From a secret recipe, Aberfoyle & Knight steep whole ginger in the wine for an extended period to extract as much of its essence as possible. Then chillies and spices are added to give the wine its heat. Enjoy this in a variety of dishes that call for ginger and/or spice. Or try it as a delightful fiery libation when you want to chase the chill from your bones.

Sherry
  GONZALEZ-BYASS NUTTY SOLERA
Medium Dry Oloroso

Tasting Note: Excellent value in a delicious richly-styled medium sweet dark-amber coloured oloroso. The fragrant orange peel, raisin, walnut and spice aromas are followed by a smooth, nutty and warm palate. Honey and nut flavours last quite a while on the finish, with just a touch of heat. Excellent length.  Score - 89.  (Steve Thurlow, Wine Access, 'First In Line E-Report', July 2004)

BAROSSA VALLEY ESTATES 'EBENEZER' CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2002
Barossa Valley, South Australia

When the village of Ebenezer was founded in 1851 in the northern part of the Barossa Valley, vineyards were planted immediately thereafter. Though none of the original vines survived, Barossa Valley's 'Ebenezer' Cabernet Sauvignon is grown on this land from vines up to 40 years of age. Winemaker Stuart Bourne crafts this not-to-be-missed wine in an elegant style with great depth of flavour. This rich and weighty Cabernet would be delicious served with rare roast beef, but it will also reward 5 to 7 years cellaring.

  EVANS & TATE CABERNET/MERLOT  2002
Margaret River, Western Australia

The cool 2002 vintage in Margaret River produced more subtle Bordeaux-like reds rather than the sterotypical Aussie fruit-bombs. Expect aromas of tobacco, hummus, raspberry and blackcurrant with a hint of vanilla from this blend. Light-medium body in style, look for smooth tannins and a good seam of acidity. Enjoy with grilled lamb chops.

721548    (XD)   750 mL    $17.95

EVANS & TATE 'GNANGARA' CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2003

HOPE 'THREE STEPS' CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2002
'Premium', Victoria

Tasting Note: Red-black with blood-red rims. Savoury, tarry, farmyard aromas with a hint of aniseed over creamy oak. Sweet cherry fruit flavours with currants and Christmas cake spices, a hint of tobacco and seemingly little oak influence, there's a touch of acidity on the finish that balances the fruit sweetness. A very quaffable party wine.  (Sue Courtney, www.wineoftheweek.com, May 2005)

744367    (XD)   750 mL    $13.95

  THE LUCKY COUNTRY GRENACHE/SHIRAZ/MOURVEDRE  2003
Barossa Valley, South Australia
(Two Hands)

Tasting Note: Australia's version of a Cotes du Rhone, the 2003 GSM is a peppery, fruity effort with a superficial character, but lots of spice, an evolved color, and an easy-going style. A blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Shiraz, and 5% Mourvedre, it should be drunk over the next year. It is rare to find such a value, so consumers should move quickly.  Score - 87.  (Robert Parker Jr., www.eroberparker.com, Oct. 2004)

DOMAINE BOYAR 'ROYAL RESERVE' MERLOT  1998
Sliven

When released by VINTAGES in late 2004, critics described this 1998 Merlot as displaying an excellent integration of fruit and oak with a firm tannin core. Some even called its quality Spanish-like. A year and a half later, it's back for a return visit so you can discover for yourself how the tannins are resolving themselves and the fruit is coming to the fore.

Food match: roast beef au jus.

  CHÂTEAU DE CHAMBERT  2002
AC Cahors
(Joël Delgoulet, Prop.)

Tasting Note: Due to its deep colour, Cahors red wine has for over a century been called the 'black wine'. Based upon the inky dark colour, this 2002 vintage definitely lives up to the reputation. It doesn't stop there, though, as the intense aromas of blackberry, cassis, cocoa bean and iodine, plus the concentrated, firm/grippy flavours confirm that this is a Malbec to reckon with. Give it at least three years in a cellar to be truly rewarded.  (VINTAGES panel, June 2005)

  QUINTARELLI VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE  1997
DOC

Giuseppe Quintarelli needs no introduction. He is more alchemist than winemaker. His wines are unlike anyone else's, even when made with the same grape varieties. His Valpolicella, unlike most, will reward serious cellar time. At almost nine years old, this Valpolicella is drinking beautifully now, and would even reward further cellaring (1-3 years). Serve with taglietella and creamy truffle sauce.

Tasting Note: This combination of Portuguese and international varieties (including Tempranillo, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira and Cabernet Sauvignon) celebrates the best of both world. The medium deep burgundy red colour leads to an impressive aroma profile that recalls raspberry, pie crust, mint, cherry, blueberry and a hitn of coffee. It is dry, very well-balanced with good ripe tannins and a hint of acid crispness. Medium full-bodied with a long, elegant finish.  (D. Churchill/G. MacDonald, VINTAGES, Nov. 2005)

  HUMBERTO CANALE MALBEC  2002
Patagonia

At the bottom of the world, 39.2 degrees south of the equator, Patagonia is a unique wine producing region. There is quite a fluctuation in temperature between the warm sunny days and cool nights resulting in slower maturing grapes. Harvesting in the region is one month later than in Mendoza allowing the grapes to become more concentrated. Founded in 1913, Humberto Canale is one of the leading producers in the region and its philosophy has always given precedence to quality over quantity.

The wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 12 months which lends vanilla and tobacco notes to the ripe red berry fruit flavours.
