 Spirits - March 4 Release
Irish Whiskey
  CLONTARF SINGLE MALT
Gently Aged in Bourbon Barrels

Made from grain and pure Irish spring water, mellowed through Atlantic Irish oak charcoal and aged in bourbon barrels.

Tasting Note: Nose: sharp grassy maltiness and a touch salty. Full of character. Taste: ultra malty start, rich-textured and mouthwateringly in the Clontarf style. Finish: varying shades of malt, then a late oaky complexity.  (Producer)

672899    700 mL    $53.95

  CLONTARF TRINITY

Clontarf is an ancient village nestled along Dublin Bay's northern shore. It was here in the year 1014 that High King Brian Boru defeated a mighty Viking army at the famous Battle of Clontarf. Today, Clontarf is a suburb of the bustling capital of Dublin. Special packaging was developed to feature the three Clontarf 'expressions'. The 'Trinity' consists of three interlocking bottles. Each 200 mL section contains a different type of Clontarf whiskey.

672907    600 mL    $59.95

CONNEMARA 'CASK STRENGTH' PEATED SINGLE MALT
(Cooley Distillery)

Tasting Note: Nose: Liniment and farmyard. Honey on hot porridge, before a mushroom cloud of peat blows your head off. Finish: A rollercoaster ride of pepper, huge amounts of billowing smoke, then vanilla, mint and choc fudge. Comment: I just love this un-chill filtered version; it's fat, it's loud and it's fun. In this price bracket, there are very few Scottish single malts that can match it.  Score - 9 1/4 (out of 10). (Peter Mulryan, www.whiskymag.com)

913400    750 mL    $84.95

  CONNEMARA PEATED SINGLE MALT
(Cooley Distillery)

Tasting Note: Nose: Sweet, clean peat, vanilla and - floral notes. One of the most profound and complex of Irish noses. Palate: Again very sweet, peaty. Softly honeyed and oily Mild molasses, fabulously smoky. Finish: Becomes drier as some oak bites, but the peat just keeps on rumbling along. Comment: This single malt had suffered from an identity crisis over the last year or so. Some vattings had become slightly off-key, dirty even, and the malt had lost direction. This bottling, however, is back to its brilliant best.  Score - 9 (out of 10).  (Jim Murray, www.whiskymag.com)

475921    750 mL    $64.95

LOCKE'S 8 YEAR OLD SINGLE MALT
Pure Pot Still

913475    700 mL    $64.95

  PADDY OLD IRISH WHISKEY
(Cork Distilleries Co.)

Tasting Note: Nose: Very linseedy, flowery and appetising. Palate: Smooth, perfumy. Finish: Mustard. Comment: A classic Irish, though less full in flavour than Jameson.  Score - 7 1/2 (out of 10). (Michael Jackson, www.whiskymag.com)

345215    700 mL    $27.95

  THE TYRCONNELL SINGLE MALT
(Andrew A. Watt & Co.)

Tasting Note: Nose: An intense assault of pear drops, lime peel and Haribo jelly sweets. Incredibly fruity. Palate: Very creamy but not as sweet as the nose would lead you to believe. Loads of grassy spice with honeyed oak after a moment. Finish: Quinine dry. Comment: This malt used to be a tad young, the current bottling is older and certainly works better.  Score - 7 1/2 (out of 10). (Peter Mulryan, www.whiskymag.com)

402396    700 mL    $46.95

Scotch Whisky
TEANINICH 12 YEAR OLD SINGLE MALT
Aged in Oakwood Casks, Highland
(Lombard Scotch Whisky)

Tasting Note: When we waved this under our beaks we couldn't help but exclaiming, "Wow - this is different!" This straw colored spirit is robust, grassy, shows honey, bananas, along with earth and iodine. A real tour of flavors, for sure. Magnificent balance between the gentler floral and fruity notes and the earthy and iodine one. Yum!  Score - ****1/4 (out of 5). (www.alcoholreviews.com, April 3, 2005)

HENRI BOURGEOIS 'PETIT BOURGEOIS' CABERNET   2003
Vin de Pays du Jardin de la France

From the 'Baron of Chavignol'. In this release, we feature a red and a white (672345) from Henri Bourgeois discovered by VINTAGES' buyer Claudius Fehr on a trip to the Loire last year. Both are expressive of the Loire Valley style: fresh, not at all heavy, and versatile.

Tasting Note: Mid-ruby in colour. Lots of plush Cabernet Franc character with currant and cherry. Light-bodied, round and ripe, reflecting the warmth of the 2003 vintage.  (VINTAGES panel, June 13, 2005)

  CHÂTEAU DE BEAUCASTEL CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE   2003
AC
(Fermière des Vignobles Pierre Perrin)

Tasting Note: . the blend for Beaucastel's 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape includes more Grenache (50%) since that varietal was both consistent and of high quality. The balance is 20% Mourvedre, and 30% such varietals as Syrah and Counoise. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by an earthy style, moderately high levels of tannin, and neither the suppleness nor forward flamboyance of the 2000 or 2001. Dense, full-bodied, and structured, the 2003 is clearly a vin de garde. It will require 5-6 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 15-18.  Score - (91-93). This DOC was established in 1969 and is located in the south of Puglia, on the coast not far from Bari, the region's capital. Locorotondo whites, like this blend of Verdeca and Bianco d'Alessano, are light green or light straw in colour, extremely clear, light-bodied and delicately fruity.
