  'LA GUITA' MANZANILLA
Sanlúcar de Barrameda
(Hijos de Rainera Perez Marin)

Perez Marin's 'La Guita' Manzanilla is made from only the best grapes and first pressing of the Palomino grapes. They age their wines longer in the solera system than most producers, resulting in a wine that is very fresh and crisp with the legensdary nutty tang caused by the 'flor' yeast. The producer suggests enjoying this Manzanilla, always chilled, with tapas snacks, such as olives, hard cheeses, ham or seafood.

Port
  RAMOS PINTO LBV PORT  1998
Late Bottled Vintage, Btld. 2002

We all assume that Ports are only appropriate with nuts, aged or pungent cheeses, some desserts and dried fruit. But Ramos Pinto puts forth an interesting challenge. They suggest that this jammy, plummy, nutty LBV is an excellent match for a pepper steak. The rationale is that the sweetness of the Port counteracts the heat from the pepper. Put their recommendation to the test, or conduct your own wine and food matching experiment.

Dessert Wine

  J.P. VINHOS MOSCATEL DE SETÚBAL
DOC, Portugal

Compared to its popular cousins, Port and Madeira, fortified Moscatel de Setúbal, is relatively unknown in the wine world. Made with the Muscat grape, this wine delivers delicious aromatic intensity for little money. If you are looking to explore other fortified Portuguese wines, this is a stop you must make. This version won a Gold Medal at the 2004 Muscats du Monde in France. Enjoy with crème caramel.

INNISKILLIN OKANAGAN ZINFANDEL  2003
Bear Cub Vineyard, VQA Okanagan Valley

Tasting Note: Zinfandel thrives in torrid climes, and while Canadian heat might seem oxymoronic, recall that the southern Okanagan is a veritable pocket desert. If you don't believe it, go for a visit in August and see how long you can last without air conditioning. Then fire up the BBQ and crack open a bottle of Inniskillin's Zinfandel. With grapes sourced from a particularly sun-drenched six acre vineyard, it's proof that bold reds can ripen in BC, with gobs of crushed elderberry leading to a hefty, oaky core that screams sexy.  (Kenji Hodgson & James Nevison, www.kitslanoview.ca, Nov. 2005)

  PENFOLDS 'RESERVE BIN' RIESLING  2005
Eden Valley, South Australia

Tasting Note: There are some wines that I taste that really delight my senses and this is a wine that has done just that. The Penfolds Reserve Bin Riesling is made from top notch grapes from the Eden Valley and it displays all the finesse and style expected from Riesling from this region. Whilst it has a tight structure to allow it to age, it is brimming with lively, delicate citrus and blossom characters that need capturing whilst the wine is in its youth. So despite its ageing potential, my advice is to drink this wine now. Pair with fine and delicate cuisine such as white-fleshed fish and garden fresh salads to allow the wine to truly shine.  (Toni Paterson, www.winediva.com.au, Sept. 2005)

"Houghton is fast becoming Australia's benchmark for quality. Do better than it at any price, and you're doing nicely," says Aussie wine critic Jeremy Oliver (www.onwine.com.au). Barossa Valley, South Australia

Tasting Note: Smooth, elegant and approachable Barossa shiraz with a ripe, slightly jammy aroma of violets and blackcurrants, plums and raspberries enhanced by a restrained expression of chocolate/vanilla oak and spicy nuances of cinnamon and cloves. Long and silky, its vibrant expression of dark berries and plum does reveal a currant-like aspect, but retains brightness and vitality. Supported by lightly smoky chocolate/mocha oak and a firmish, fine-grained backbone.  Score - 93.  (Jeremy Oliver, www.onwine.com.au, March 7, 2005)

Tasting Note: ... remarkably good shiraz and represents incredible value-for-money ... It is quintessential McLaren Vale shiraz - rich, ripe, generous and full-flavoured. What sets the 'Keystone' apart is its dark chocolate, black cherry characters, soft, lush texture and succulence - all beautifully balanced with powerful vanillin oak and fine, approachable tannins. Drinking well now, but can be cellared in the short term.  Score - 'Bloody Good'.  (Peter Forrestal, www.quaff.com.au, Feb. 3, 2006)

It is dry with a very good balance between the fruit and acid with soft tannins in support. Medium full-bodied with a lingering blackberry/garrigue finish.  (David Churchill, VINTAGES, Feb. 2005)

DOMAINE DU CRAMPILH VIGNES VIEILLES  2000
AC Madiran

This wine is made with 100% Tannat. Generally, much of the tannin in these wines comes from the maceration with the grape's skins. This version is made with fruit from old vines (average age 70) which produces smaller berries and reduced yields that further increases the tannins. Give this wine 4-10 in a cellar and you will be amply rewarded.

LINGENFELDER 'VINEYARD CREATURES' 6 PACK  2004
QbA, with Box, Tasting and Information Sheets

This box set is making its world premier through Vintages. Lingenfelder's 'Vineyard Creatures' box contains a group of wines that are designed to focus on the crisp, vibrant flavours of the vineyard. The six 'Creatures' all represent a different grape variety or region. Inside you will find five wines from the Pfalz - Bird Label Riesling, Owl Label Pinot Grigio, Hare Label Gewurztraminer, Bee Label Morio Muscat and Fox Label Dornfelder - plus one from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer - Fish Label Mosel Riesling. You will also find a tasting mat to write your notes upon and an very informative fact sheet. Although you could savour these fine wines over the course of several days, meals or weeks, we suggest you invite a medium sized group of friends over and throw a wine tasting party. Since the box contains only one copy of the tasting mat, further copies may be downloaded at www.lingenfelder.com. The fact sheet recommends glasses needed and fine food suggestions. As Lingenfelder proposes, order in Japanese sushi, Thai spicy noodle dishes and/or Chinese dim sum, chill the whites (and you can even give a bit of chill to the red Dornfelder), remove the caps (for freshness sake, all wines are sealed under Stelvin screwcaps) and let the party begin.

Cappelleta's wines are certified organic under the CODEX organization. Our Quality Assurance laboratory has determined that this wine contains 6 mg/l of free sulphur. The winery also makes its wines using biodynamic methods like harvesting and planting around the cycles of the moon - techniques that some consider eccentric. However, a study published in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture titled "Soil and Winegrape Quality in Biodynamically and Organically Managed Vineyards" showed that, over a 10 year period, biodynamic farming does produce somewhat better results than straight organic farming.

BOLLA 'LE POIANE' VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE  2001

Unlike standard Valpolicella, Bolla's 'Le Poiane' goes through the secondary fermentation of ripassato. The wine is then aged for one to two years in small oak barrels prior to bottling. Deeper in colour, bolder in flavour and higher in alcohol than most Valpolicellas., this wine matches a wider range of cuisine including steak, lamb or rich pasta sauces.

RAVENSWOOD 'OLD HILL' ZINFANDEL  2003
Sonoma Valley

Tasting Note: Good bright ruby-red. Aromas of black raspberry, mocha, tar, brown spices, menthol and black licorice; rather claret-like. Dense and thick on entry, then extremely primary and closed in the middle, but already showing lovely spicy lift and inner-mouth perfume. An infant of a zinfandel, with the strong acidity and substantial ripe tannins to ensure a slow evolution in bottle. This will grow spicier over the years. This single-vineyard Cab was awarded a Double Gold Medal from the 2005 Taster's Guild International Wine Judging.

Tasting Note: From a vineyard way high in the Mayacamas Mountains above Alexander Valley, this Cab has massive, palate-numbing tannins. But it's also humongous in blackberries and cherries, and is balanced. There's no reason it shouldn't do fabulous things in the cellar. Drink after 2008.  Score - 91.  (Steve Heimoff, Wine Enthusiast, Nov. 1 2005)

BERINGER 'ALLUVIUM' RED  2001/2002
Knights Valley

Both the 2001 and 2002 vintages were released at the same time.

The 2001 is a blend of 76% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. A deep ruby/purple color and fragrant aromatics are followed by notions of red and black currants, flowers, tobacco, and licorice. This tasty, elegant, complex red should drink well for a decade.  Score - 89.  (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Feb. 2005)

The 2002 received a score of 88-90 from Robert Parker Jr. (www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2003)

BLACKSTONE MERLOT  2003
California

Tasting Note: A ripe, plump and uncomplicated merlot that has some length and body to it. A cherry, floral and tomato medley on the nose leads to pretty good focus in the mouth. Ripe berries glide along a seam of acidity with noticeable but not intrusive alcohol and tannin. Good length. Ready to drink.  (Jefferson Davis, Wine Access, 'First In Line E-Report', Oct. 2005)
