CAVE DE RASTEAU 'SIGNATURE' RASTEAU VIN DOUX NATUREL  2000
AC

Since not much of this dessert wine leaves the Rasteau region, this is a rare treat. For the wine geek in you, here's a fascinating fact. Dry table wines from Rasteau, must go under the Côtes du Rhône-Villages AC, while Vins doux Naturels are released under the Rasteau AC. Ironically, the grapes for this wine can be sourced from Rasteau, Cairanne or Sablet. This smoky, grapey, raisin and date-scented wine can be cellared 2-4 years thanks to well-integrated tannins - or enjoyed tonight, slightly chilled, with dark chocolate.

Concha Y Toro consistently overachieves with every line they produce. For the popular 'Trio' range, the winery sources the best regions for the three grapes in each blend: this power-packed, ripe and spicy red is from the Maipo Valley. The winery's website (www.conchaytoro.cl) features recipes tailor-made for each wine in the series. They recommend beef fillets with crunchy mashed potatoes and grilled spring onions for this one.

The 'Spinyback' lizard is native to New Zealand. Waimea Estates donates 5 cents of every bottle they sell to fund research and education into their namesake. Nelson, after Marlborough, is probably the best place in New Zealand to grow Sauvignon Blanc. The climatic conditions are ideal for the creation of the legendary grass/gooseberry/passion fruit aromas and flavours we've all come to expect in Kiwi Sauvignon. Enjoy with grilled prawns.

QmP, Niersteiner Brückchen, Estate Btld.

Tasting Note: Sweet lime, peach and cherry aromas. Juicy and refreshing, yet with an impressive sense of chalky and salty mineral extract and a doughy sense of stuffing. High residual sugar and high acidity keep one another in line on the high wire and insure a sense of brightness and dynamism that justify the name Kabinett for a wine harvested as theoretically high-grade Spatlese.  Score - * (out of 2).  (David Schildknecht, International Wine Cellar, Jan./Feb. 2004)

Created from the tiny 7 acre (less than 3 ha) vineyard, this wine was first made in 1983. This Capitel Foscarino beautifully illustrates what the region's wines should taste like. Expect it to be ripe and round with a fresh layer of acidity and lovely aromatics.   TAURINO 'NOTARPANARO' ROSSO  1999
IGT Salento

Tasting Note: The question mark beside the score of the 1999 Notarpanaro relates to its controversial late harvest Amarone-like notes along with a touch of volatile acidity. Its big, spicy, earthy nose is reminiscent of burning tobacco intermixed with aged beef, ashes, and sweet cheese. Not for everybody, it is an authentic, rustic southern Italian red made in an old style. SULA VINEYARDS SAUVIGNON BLANC  2005
Nashik Valley, Maharashtra, India, Estate Btld.

Along with Grover Vineyards, Sula Vineyards is proving that quality wine production can succeed in India. Both wineries have discovered land, high in the foothills, that have the right soils and climate to properly mature wine grapes. "[Sula] most accurately represents the future of all the smaller new growers and wineries [in India]." (Viv Menon, www.jancisrobinson.com, Jan. 24, 2006)

Tasting Note: Shows classic Sauvignon Blanc aromas and flavours such as green grass, apple, melon and fresh herbs. This dry, fresh wine would be an ideal partner for spicy Indian coconut-based curries or dishes flavoured with coriander. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2005)

WAKEFIELD MERLOT  2004
Clare Valley, South Australia

Bill Taylor and his family were wine merchants in Sydney before establishing this now-famous winery in the Clare Valley in the late 1960s. Still family owned, the winery is known as Taylors within Australia, but uses the Wakefield moniker for export to avoid confusion with the Californian winery of the same name.

Tasting Note: A huge brute of a wine. Big fruity/chocolaty/minty nose and a lovely rich, sweet fruit palate. Young and chewy with lovely flavour intensity.  Score - **** (out of 5).  (Winestate, July/Aug 2005)

HUGH HAMILTON 'THE MONGREL' SANGIOVESE BLEND  2005
McLaren Vale, South Australia

Hugh Hamilton personifies everything that has made Australian wines a world wide success. On one hand, he is a fifth generation winemaker who is loaded with talent. On the other hand, as the self-proclaimed 'black sheep' of the Hamilton family he doesn't take himself too seriously and is willing to blaze his own path. He's leading the pack when it comes to a-typical grape varieties as evidenced in this ecclectic blend of 85 % Sangiovese, 10% Merlot and 5% Tempranillo. A young and vibrant wine, look for cherry, truffle and spice characteristics.

Tasting Note: Impressively concentrated and firmly structured, this cooked, stewy and meaty shiraz is made in the style made popular by Robert Parker. Gamey, spicy aromas of blackberries and plums, prunes and currants are backed by tarry, treacle-like undertones. Sumptuous and smooth, its full-bodied palate of shrivelled fruit flavours does lack genuine fruit sweetness, but does offer plenty of length of flavour framed by chewy, astringent tannins ...  Score - 91.  (Jeremy Oliver, www.onwine.com.au, Aug. 10, 2005)

Tasting Note: Deep ruby. Seems more shiraz on the nose, with notes of dark cherry, licorice, unsweetened chocolate and espresso. The grenache comes through on the palate, though, showing sweet raspberry, wild strawberry and cracked pepper qualities. A fat, round, pliant wine that finishes chunky, even slightly gritty. Tasting Note: Long and harmonious, this complex and seamless shiraz has a spicy cracked pepper fragrance of intense cassis, plums and mulberries over nuances of polished leather, undergrowth and sweet truffles. Firm and supple, its silky palate presents perfectly ripened dark berry/plum fruit tightly knit with restrained oak and fine tannins, finishing with lingering savoury notes and fruit sweetness. There's some pleasing rusticity, and a greenish edge to the tannins that should diminish with age.  Score - 95.  (Jeremy Oliver, www.onwine.com.au, July 2004)

  PFEIFFER RUTHERGLEN MUSCAT
Rutherglen, Victoria

As the Oxford Companion to Wine (1999) states: "[Rutherglen] could be said to be Australia's answer to Oporto. It is the centre of production of Australia's most distinctive [fortified] wines." The producer recommends enjoying this dribbled over vanilla ice cream, or with a rich fruit cake.

Tasmania

White Wine
  NINTH ISLAND PINOT GRIGIO  2005
Tasmania
(Pipers Brook Vineyards)

Ninth Island is the easy drinking second label for Pipers Brook and is named after a small private island that lies in the Bass Strait across from the Pipers River wine region. Pinot Grigio thrives in the cool climate of northern Tasmania and this fresh and fruity wine is an excellent match for steamed mussels or lemon risotto. Look for aromas of pear, exotic fruits and musk in this richly textured, food-friendly wine.

Western Australia

Red Wine
  VOYAGER CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2001
Margaret River, Western Australia

This wine is more of a Bordeaux-style blend with 17% Merlot in the mix.

Tasting Note: Dense aromas of cassis, dark plums, cherries and berries are tightly knit with cedar/dark chocolate oak, with undertones of dried herbs. Long, elegant and beautifully structured, its piercingly intense flavours of cassis, blackberries and ark plums integrate neatly with new oak and dusty, firm, fine-grained tannin. Superbly balanced and revealing exceptional length of flavour, it should develop into a regional classic.  Score - 97.  (Jeremy Oliver, www.onwine.com.au, June 2005)
