PUDDICOMBE ESTATE CRANBERRY

Please note that this product has been moved to the May 27 release.

Tasting Note: The brilliant 'disco' pink colour is not the only quality that makes this wine a fine alternative to traditional rosés. Fresh aromas of cranberry, orange and lemon drops burst from the glass. The fruit flavours replay beautifully on the off-dry palate and a solid core of acidity keeps the whole affair quite lively! This would make a unique match with grilled salmon.  (VINTAGES panel, March 2006)

  HILLEBRAND 'TRIUS' VIDAL ICEWINE   2004
VQA Niagara Peninsula

Tasting Note: For several years now Hillebrand has barrel-aged its vidal icewine, adding spicy, buttery and caramel notes that render it something like Sauternes. This vintage spent six months in new French oak barrels. Yet there is the pear and grapefruity citrus of vidal as well. It's quite elegant, fine, sweet and plush, with some of the tenderness of the 2004 style. Enjoy now to 2009.  Score - Outstanding .  (David Lawrason, www.winerytohome.com, Sept. 2005)

'BLACK GRANITE' SHIRAZ   2004
WO Coastal Region
(Darling Cellars)

The grapes are sourced from West Coast vineyards situated on granite bedrock. At times, these stressed vines are 'starved' for water, with their roots systems stretched to their limits. This stress leads to higher quality fruit and a more complex wine. Look for aromas and flavours of coffee, spice and smoked meat as well as wild berries in this full-bodied Shiraz.

GOATS DO ROAM IN VILLAGES   2004
WO Coastal Region

Tasting Note: Puns are one thing, but I'm also a sucker for good wines, and this one, happily is quite an intense, tasty thing. A blend of syrah and pinotage, this muscled-up red comes on strong with blackberry and bitter chocolate aromas, followed by out-front flavors of plum, blackberry and dark fruits, with that typical South African hint of ash lurking in the background. It's a big, chewy wine, with plenty of tannin and acidity that really is ready made to pair with a hearty stew. (Robert Mayfield, www.statesmanjournal.com, Jan. 12 2006)

Tasting Note: New blending angle from 2003; small but influential drop of Shiraz (6%) joins Bordeaux quartet Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc (54/34/3/3%), all beautifully meshed. Ample, soft, cedar-edged red-wine aromas; more cab structural presence on palate, confers seamless grip on creamily textured savoury/red fruit flavours. Good now; even better by 2009.  Score - **** (out of 5).  (Angela Lloyd, John Platter South African Wines 2006)

HUPFELD RIESLING KABINETT HALBTROCKEN   2004
QmP, Hochheimer Königin Victoriaberg, Estate Btld.

Savvy producers have recognized the importance of 'brand name' for a lot longer that we know. In 1845, when the British Royal Family visited the village of Hochheim, the owner of this property invited them to come and try his wines. As the story goes, the Queen was most 'amused'. Over the next five years, subsequent vintages of these wines were sent to the England for the Queen's enjoyment. In 1850, she gave her blessing for the vineyard to be renamed Hochheimer Königin Victoriaberg. To this day, whenever the British Royal Family visits Germany, they are served the wines from this property. On May 24th, enjoy this fruity and balanced libation as a sipping and toasting wine on Queen Victoria's 187th birthday.

JERUZALEM ORMOZ RENSKI RIZLING   2004
Ormoz-Ljutomer

Renski Rizling is the Slovenian name for Riesling. Because of the warm climate, Slovenian Rieslings tend to be more intensely aromatic and slightly lower in acid than most German versions of the grape. In fact, they are more like Austrian Rieslings. The Podravje area, where the Ormoz-Ljutomer vinegrowing region can be found, is one of the best places to grow Riesling in Slovenia. The producer recommends enjoying this Riesling with grilled white fish, subtle pork and veal dishes or goose liver.
