  KISTLER CHARDONNAY  2004

  STEENBERG SAUVIGNON BLANC  2005
WO Constantia

A short drive from Cape Town is Constantia, the birthplace of South Africa's wine industry. One look at the picturesque valley and it's easy to see why the Cape's first Governor, Simon van der Stel chose to build his home there.

Tasting Note: Perennial favourite; larger quantities than Reserve but also a fast seller. 2005 maintains unflashy, ultra-fresh, bouncily dry feel, though pure gooseberry/lemon tones are touch riper, broader than previous [vintage]; excellent balance, remarkably sustained. Includes tiny but influential 7% Semillon.  Score - **** (out of 5).  (Angela Lloyd, John Platter South African Wines 2006)

  CHÂTEAU D'AYDIE 'ODÉ D'AYDIE'  2001
AC Madiran
(Pierre Laplace)

Château d'Aydie is one of the Madiran's best properties, praised by many including Andrew Jefford in his book The New France (2003) who calls it "one of the most immaculately and professionally run domains in the whole of France". This, their second wine, has the 80% Tannat softened by addition of 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Our panel was impressed with the plum, cherry and mineral tones and the supple, rather than firm tannins. Enjoy it with cassoulet - a traditional dish of southwest France.

Deeply coloured, it is rich and supple, with generous, well-ripened plum, cherry and spice flavours. Already delicious, it's an unusually savoury, complex wine, showing lovely fruit sweetness and density.  Score - ***** (out of 5).  (Michael Cooper, Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines 2006)

OYSTER BAY MERLOT  2005
Hawkes Bay, North Island

"The philosophy of Oyster Bay is to produce fine, distinctly regional wines that are elegant and assertive with glorious fruit flavours. The Hawkes Bay wine region is arguably the most exciting find in recent times for the cultivation of merlot in New Zealand ... With a temperate maritime climate, the vines are warmed by strong clear sunlight during the day and cooled at night by the sea breezes of the Pacific Ocean." (www.oysterbaywines.com). Expect ripe fruit, spice and soft tannins on the nose and palate. Enjoy with grilled steaks, gourmet sausages or pasta with bolognese sauce.

BABICH SAUVIGNON BLANC  2005
Marlborough, South Island

Tasting Note: The 2005 vintage reflects the rising input of grapes from the company's Cowslip Valley vineyard in the Waihopai Valley, described by Babich as giving 'riper, less herbaceous' fruit characters than its Awatere Valley and Wairau Valley vineyards. It's a fleshy, full-bodied wine ... with tropical-fruit flavours to the fore, moderate acidity, good freshness, dryness and depth, and great drinkability.  Score - **** (out of 5).  (Michael Cooper, Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines 2006)

Marlborough, South Island

The Clos Henri vineyard near Renwick is owned by Henri Bourgeois [the man behind the popular Sauvignon-based Sancerre in our Essentials Collection, 542548, $23.95], ... [he] feels this wine expresses 'a unique terroir ... and French winemaking approach'. (Michael Cooper, Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wine 2006). This is the third vintage for the wine in Marlborough. They produce it from vines of three different ages grown on two different types of soil. The resulting wine is an exciting blend of guava fruit, mineral and lemon/lime. The producer suggests this would match well with smoked salmon sandwiches or bacon-wrapped pan-seared scallops.
