Vodka
DISTILLERIE WILLISAU 'XELLENT' SWISS VODKA
Switzerland

Tasting Note: The initial whiffs find herbal aromas with faint hints of jasmine and moss; additional scents of tea leaves, minerals and wet stone appear in the later passes. The palate entry is semisweet and biscuity; midpalate is nutty, concentrated and remarkably mineral-like. Concludes dynamically. One of only three or four over-$30 superpremium vodkas actually worth the price tag. Wow.  Score - 96-100.  (F. Paul Pacult, Wine Enthusiast, April 2005)

STONECHURCH CHARDONNAY 'SANS CHÊNE'  2004
VQA Niagara Peninsula

The 2004 vintage was ideal for creating the Burgundian-styled Chardonnays for which Ontario is developing a reputation. This unoaked style recalls Chablis; expect aromas of peach, apple and pear. Enjoy with freshwater fish, pasta with white sauces, grilled chicken or steamed oysters or clams.

HENRY OF PELHAM PINOT NOIR  2004
VQA Niagara Peninsula, Unfiltered

Henry of Pelham has shown a deft hand at the production of Pinot Noir. Viticultural Manager Matthew Speck has had great success delivering the notoriously difficult grape to skilled winemaker Ron Giesbrecht. Giesbrecht then works his magic to create a style that is definitely closer to the Burgundian model than the New World style. There is an excellent balance here between fruit, tannin and acid. Enjoy with grilled tuna, pork liver pâtés or roasted duck.

MALIVOIRE CABERNET FRANC ICEWINE  2004
VQA Niagara Peninsula, Estate Btld.

Malivoire pays tribute to the pickers who suffered in the freezing cold (it must have been really cold, as the grapes were picked during the daytime, something that rarely happens) by listing all their names on the back label. Nice.

Tasting Note: Deep pink, strawberry compote nose; not too sweet, medium-bodied, well balanced and fresh.  (Tony Aspler, www.tonyaspler.com, March 27, 2006)

RAVENSWOOD 'ICON' SYRAH  2003
Sonoma County

Ravenswood shows it has much more going for it than its benchmark Zinfandels. As a member winery of California's 'Rhône Rangers' it's not surprising they also craft this rich and attractive blend of 81% Syrah, 13% Grenache and 6% Mourvedre. Expect a juicy, well-structured wine with blackberry and chocolate characteristics that would pair nicely with beef tenderloin or grilled steaks with a rosemary/garlic rub.

DORNIER 'DONATUS' WHITE  2004
WO Stellenbosch

Tasting Note: (This was bottled an hour before my visit; a blend of 60% chenin blanc done in wood, 30% semillon in tank and 10% sauvignon blanc) Good pale color. High-pitched nose combines lime, white grapefruit, white flowers, snap pea and spearmint, plus hints of eucalyptus and banana. Fat and silky but zingy, with pungent flavors of gooseberry, eucalyptus and minerals. This offers terrific inner-mouth perfume and shows strong granitic character. Finishes quite long and brisk. This makes the 2003 version seem dry by comparison. Highly promising white wine, and the most intriguing bottle I sampled on my visit to Dornier.  Score - 90(+?).  (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, March/April 2005)

CHÂTEAU MAZERIS  2003

CHÂTEAU MEYRE  2000
AC Haut-Médoc, Cru Bourgeois

The wine's full complement of grapes is 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. Château Meyre is one of only a few wineries that still uses Petit Verdot in their blend. This terrific grape is disappearing from the vineyards of Bordeaux because it is a very late ripener (even later than Cab Sauv), a serious disadvantage in the finicky climate of the region. When it successfully ripens, as it did beautifully in 2000, it can add spicy, aromatic blackcurrant and a depth of flavour, colour and tannin to the Bordeaux blend.

Künstler is one of the young-guard German producers who are helping to push and prod the country's wines into the 21st century. Our panel was particularly taken with this peach/apricot-rich wine. It was quite dry and elegant with a very long finish.

DONNAFUGATA 'ANTHÌLIA' BLANCO  2005
IGT Sicilia

A blend of the indigenous Ansonica and Catarratto grapes, the wines are matured in stainless steel to retain the bright fruitiness and crisp acidity. 'Anthìlia' is the Roman name of the Sicilian city of Entella, near where the grapes are grown. According to the producer, this wine would match steamed mussels or shrimp in sweet pepper and Parmesan sauce.

PIO CESARE BARBERA D'ALBA  2003

As this wine demonstrates, in a hot year such as 2003 Barbera d'Alba creates a fresh and fruity wine with a lot of blackberry character. Enjoy with veal tenderloin or grilled vegetables.

QUINTARELLI VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE  1998
DOC

"Guiseppe Quintarelli is an elder statesman in the Valpolicella zone, and a mythic figure among winemakers and consumers alike," notes the Vino Italiano Buying Guide 2004. His wines are unlike anyone else's, even when made with the same grape varieties. His Valpolicella matches the quality of many others' Amarones and, unlike most Valpolicellas, will reward serious cellar time. Enjoy this gloriously rich wine with tagliatelle and creamy truffle sauce.

FUMANELLI VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO  2004
DOC

Tasting Note: A good value Valpol with aromas of dried fruit, cherry/berry, earth and pepper tones. It is dry with a lively tartness surrounding the fruit. It is light- to medium-bodied with a long crisp/fruit finish. Served lightly chilled, it would be a great choice for a picnic in the garden.  (VINTAGES panel, Jan. 2006)

ZENI 'COSTALAGO' ROSSO  2004
IGT Rosso Veronese

Zeni uses a variation on the Ripasso method for this wine but cannot call it Ripasso because the blend here (Corvina (a Valpol grape), Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon) is not allowed in Valpolicella. Nevertheless, this is a warm and generously scented wine that Veneto expert Nick Belfrage described as "Bordeaux meets Valpolicella Ripasso and both benefit from each's characteristics."

QUINTA DOS ROQUES VINHO TINTO  2003
DOC Dão

With approximately 40% of the blend derived from the legendary Port grape Touriga Nacional, Quinta dos Roques' dry red 2003 is a full-flavoured fruity blockbuster with a good core of acid and tannin for balance. Enjoyable now with rare cuts of beef, lamb or venison, it should also improve with some time in bottle.

BODEGAS MUGA ROSÉ  2005
DOC Rioja

One of my favourite Rioja estates, Bodegas Muga continues to fashion traditionally made cuvées, but also has a foot in the future. (Robert Parker Jr., Wine Advocate, June 30, 2005). Made with Garnacha, Tempranillo and Viura, expect this 2005 to be dry and flavourful with bright raspberry and strawberry nose. Would complement a paella dish, or pan-fried freshwater fish.

BINNER GEWURZTRAMINER KAEFFERKOPF  2004
AC Alsace, 'Merci'

'Merci' indeed. When vandals chopped down a substantial portion of Christian Binner's vines, his neighbours and friends donated enough grapes from their vineyards for him to make this wine. Nice.

Tasting Note: An assertive, robust Gewurz to match with lobster or grilled salmon steaks. Aromas are classic: lychee, grapefruit, kiwis, apple sauce and nutmeg. Just off-dry, it is quite full-bodied with a long, delicious finish.  (VINTAGES panel, Dec. 2005)

ZIND HUMBRECHT PINOT GRIS HERRENWEG DE TURCKHEIM  2004
AC Alsace

"First and foremost, you get a sense of genius in every glass of Zind-Humbrecht wine. But [Olivier Humbrecht] also has the amazing ability to explain the winemaking process from its origins deep within the soil, through the vine, into the grape, through harvest and fermentation, through ageing and bottling, and into your glass, so that even a wine novice understands exactly why the wine tastes the way it does ... [He is also a raconteur and comic genius. Asked how he knows his grapes are ripe, he replies] "When the birds start eating the fruit." (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, April 15, 2004) "I'm going to suggest that Zind-Humbrecht is probably the best producer in Alsace, with a stunning line-up of powerful, rich wines that possess a real sense of place." (Jamie Goode, www.wineanorak.com, 2005)
