DUCHÉ DE LONGUEVILLE 'MUSCADET DE DIEPPE' CIDRE BOUCHÉ DE CRU
Normandy, France

The Duché de Longueville is the only French commercial enterprise that specializes in naturally fermented, single varietal ciders. These artisanal ciders had nearly disappeared when the Duché dedicated its operations to reviving the style. The cidre bouché refers to the champagne style cork and the cru designation simply means that it is made from a single orchard using only one variety of apple. Its delectably ripe and fruity palate makes for a perfect aperitif or complement to aged cheeses.

DUCHÉ DE LONGUEVILLE 'ANTOINETTE' CIDRE BOUCHÉ DE CRU

Roussanne is the northern Rhône white grape variety legendary for producing wines with an almost haunting nose of aromas that suggest herbal tea, apricot, peach and green apple. NEPENTHE PINOT GRIS  2004
Adelaide Hills

Tasting Note: A fast-maturing but flavoursome and varietal pinot gris with a dusty, earthy and spicy aroma of citrus and melon, over nutty undertones. There's almost an oily viscosity about its generous, soft and chalky palate, whose nutty, honeyed flavours culminate in a savoury, nougat-like finish.  Score - 89.  (Jeremy Oliver, www.onwine.com.au, Sept. 21, 2005)

BIDGEEBONG 'TRIANGLE' SHIRAZ  2003
New South Wales

Tasting Note: ... Gently spicy wood and velvety prune and mulberry fruit give a bouquet full of character; the palate's bone dry and the winemakers have not filtered or fined all its chunky tannins away, so it has a structure more like a funky nebbiolo. It's hearty, wholesome and stacked with flavour. [Lamb] Shanks with olives.  Score - 88.  (Philip White, The Advertiser (Adelaide), July 6, 2005)

FIRST CREEK CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2003
Orange, New South Wales

Tasting Note: Medium-deep ruby/garnet colour with aromas that suggest plum, prune, blueberry and new leather. It is dry, forwardly fruity with soft tannins for balance. Medium full-bodied and medium long finishing, it would be a good candidate for barbecued backribs.  (David Churchill, VINTAGES, June 2006)

684126    (XD)   750 mL    $21.95

ROSEMOUNT 'HILL OF GOLD' CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2004
Mudgee, New South Wales

A wine that handily defeats the foolhardy notion that Aussie wines are fruit-bombs with limited ageability. This Hill of Gold Cabernet in fact demands 3-5 years in a cellar to really strut its stuff. Expect cassis and vanilla aromas and flavours with a core of firm tannins for ageing. But if you are curious to try it tonight, make sure you match it with rare steak or lamb.

614800    (XD)   750 mL    $21.95

ROSEMOUNT 'HILL OF GOLD' SHIRAZ  2003
Mudgee, New South Wales

Tasting Note: A cooler climate shiraz that resembles northern Rhone syrah - at least in terms of its meaty, smoky, spicy notes - while the sweetish black cherry-raspberry fruit is pure Australia. The real appeal rests in the structure, where good density and extract is spread evenly along even acid, alcohol, tannin balance. Very good to excellent length.  Score - 89.  (David Lawrason, Wine Access, 'First In Line' E-Report, Sept. 2005)

614784    (D)   750 mL    $22.95

TALTARNI SHIRAZ  2002
Pyrenees, Victoria

Tasting Note: A winner for its beautiful structure. The nose shows plenty of ripe dark berries but is still a bit closed. The wine gives a mouthful of flavour, but does so with grace and a lovely balance ... This is the most stylish Taltarni red I've tried for some time, but it will age as well as any of them.  Score - 95.  (Nick Bulleid MW, Gourmet Traveller Wine, Aug./Sept. 2005)

937219    (XD)   750 mL    $25.95

WOODSTOCK GRENACHE  2002
McLaren Vale, South Australia

Tasting Note: Known and well loved for producing solid, rather old-fashioned (chewy, oaky) McLaren Vale red wines, Woodstock is undergoing the gentlest of facelifts, with cleaner-looking labels, a new website and slightly more modern-styled wines such as this bright, spicy, earthy grenache. Far from being thick and heavy, it's delightfully easy to drink.  (The Weekend Australian Magazine, Feb. 28, 2006)

CHÂTEAU NOAILLAC  2000
AC Médoc, Cru Bourgeois
(Xaviera Marc Pagés)

Tasting Note: Well known and well thought of, Noaillac is another of the appellation's mainstays. The 2000 has a pleasingly deep, glossy colour and a delightfully complex bouquet of fruits (redcurrant and raspberry) and sweet spices. The palate combines a fleshy body with rich tannic sensations, all of which make this an attractive Médoc that should be aged for a further three to five years.  Score - * (out of 3).  (The Hachette Guide to French Wines 2004)
