 Spirits - October 14 Release
Irish Whiskey
MITCHELL & SON 'GREEN SPOT' IRISH WHISKEY

Tasting Note: Until recently, Green Spot was a closely guarded Irish treasure, exported only through the false-bottom carry-on bags of enterprising tourists ... The whisky's flavour is sweetly malty, with hints of orange peel and honey, lifted by exotic spices, predominantly cardamom. It's delicate enough to match with food, but a classic way to serve it is as an apéritif. Part of the blend is aged in old sherry casks, and the flavour comes through in a whisper. ... Despite its considerable spiciness, the whisky stays remarkably smooth.  (Beppi Crosariol, The Globe and Mail, July 10, 2004)

699827    700 mL    $82.95

Rum
STROH '54' SPICED RUM
Austria

Tasting Note: Buttery, sticky, sweet burnt sugar spice nose. Add top notes of citrus peel and a whiff of baked apples and the picture gets bigger, along with the big 54% alcoholic whack, which is there only in the name. Drying gingery spice and beautiful seamless flavour [lead] into a lengthy finish.  Score - 93.  (Patricia Noonan, Wine Access, 'First in Line E-Report', Oct. 2003)

Champagne & Sparkling Wine - October 14 Release
Champagne
GEORGES GARDET 'CUVÉE SAINT FLAVY' BRUT
AC

Tasting Note: As vibrant and well balanced as the last time I tasted it with perhaps a touch of biscuity aged character. Cherry, mineral and dried fruit aromas lead to a clean, crisp and focused palate. The cherry and mineral character is brought forward by good acidity and mousse. Well defined with good length. Will drink well through 2008. Great on its own as an aperitif.  Score - 90.  (Jeff Davis, Wine Access, 'First In Line E-Report', April 1, 2006)

Sufficient fruit concentration for the money. Crisp, clean and dry with good balance and length.  Score - 87.  (Jeff Davis, Wine Access, 'First In Line E-Report', May 13, 2006)

HENRY OF PELHAM 'BARREL FERMENTED' CHARDONNAY  2004
VQA Niagara Peninsula

Tasting Note: ... this is a quite opulent Chardonnay that's full-bodied and richly textured and flavoured. Look for peach and tropical fruit, with light toastiness from the barrel-fermentation and aging. The balance makes it a great match for roast chicken or grilled salmon. Drink it now or in the next three years.  Score - **** (out of 5).  (Rod Phillips, www.winecurrent.com, Oct. 2005)

VQA Niagara Peninsula

Delaine Vineyards, named for Jackson-Triggs' co-founder Don Triggs and his wife Elaine, is J-T's super premium vineyard property.

Tasting Note: Off-dry with the peachy/spicy flavours you'd find in German Rieslings from the Pfalz region. This is the hedonistic side of Riesling - forget all that austerity and purity. A seducer, a charmer, and an amazing amount of character for a light wine. This is the miracle of Riesling. The ultimate Sunday lunch wine. Or just sip with your sweetie.  (Billy Munnelly, www.billysbestbottles.com, Aug. 2006)

CAPE MENTELLE SAUVIGNON BLANC/SEMILLON  2005
Margaret River, Western Australia

Tasting Note: A delicate, classy wine from Cape Mentelle, made more complete by the clever use of a tiny amount of barrel fermented Semillon. Consequently, the texture of the wine is slightly softer, without losing the freshness and natural citric spark inherent to the two grapes involved. Some subtlety here, the aromatics and effusive fruit characters kept from grabbing all the attention. Quite chic. Drink now-2008.  Score - 91.  (Grant Dodd, www.thewiningpro.com, 2006)

McLaren Vale/Adelaide Hills, South Australia

Tasting Note: Juicy, warm and spirity, this ripe and slightly confectionary chardonnay has a bright, floral aroma of peaches, citrus and tropical fruit backed by buttery oak and nutty, mealy undertones. Long and smooth, its creamy and handsomely ripened palate of green melon and peachy flavour culminates in a lingering nutty, savoury finish.  Score - 88.  (Jeremy Oliver, www.jeremyoliver.com.au, July 1, 2006)

BROKENWOOD SHIRAZ  2002
South Eastern Australia

With the latest vintage of this multi-regional Shiraz, Brokenwood sourced fruit from the Beechwood region of Victoria for the very first time. They felt that the Beechwood red cherry characteristics complemented the mint notes of the Padthaway portion and the chocolate/cherry and cassis flavours from McLaren Vale. Aged in 75% American/25% French oak for 18 months, this medium-bodied Shiraz would match well with lamb or venison.

CAPE MENTELLE CABERNET/MERLOT  2004
Margaret River, Western Australia

Tasting Note: Finely balanced, firm and focused, this harmonious young wine has harmony and cellaring potential aplenty. Its dark-fruited fragrance of blackberries, cassis, plums and cherries overlies suggestions of violets and currants against a fresh background of cedar/vanilla oak. Smooth, elegant and intensely fruited, its vibrant palate of dark fruits, dried herbs and menthol knits tightly with cedary oak and a tight, firm cut of chalky tannin.  Score - 91. HOUGHTON CABERNET/SHIRAZ/MERLOT  2004
Western Australia

Tasting Note: The fruity and herbal components shine fairly brightly in this wine. Raspberry, cranberry, thyme and herbal tea scents are fresh though not overly intense. Quite poised on the palate with an elegant balance between the fruit and herbs. Mid-weight, with good acidity and some fruit and herbal persistence on the finish. Not built for the long haul but should drink well through 2010.  Score - 87.  (Jeff Davis, Wine Access, 'First In Line E-Report', April 15, 2006)

Tasting Note: Appearance: dense purple-ruby. Nose: cedar, vanilla, blackberry. Taste: full-bodied, firm structure, mell made, lean mid palate, tannic finish.  Score - **** (out of 5).  (Tony Aspler, www.tonyaspler.com, March 31, 2006)

TORBRECK 'WOODCUTTER'S' SHIRAZ  2005
Barossa Valley, South Australia

Tasting Note: 2005 was an extraordinary vintage in the Barossa, and Torbreck's 2005 Woodcutter's Shiraz may be the finest David Powell has yet produced ... Blackberry jam, creme de cassis, licorice, white flowers, and black olive scents jump from the glass of this full-bodied, silky-textured, gorgeous red. It is meant to be drunk during its first 2-4 years of life. The wine was kept on its skins for six days during which time amazing color and fruit were extracted ... This knock-out effort is one of the great values in the marketplace.  Score - 92.  (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2006)

927533    (XD)   750 mL    $23.95

VASSE FELIX CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2003
Margaret River, Western Australia

Tasting Note: The outstanding 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec, 3% Merlot, and 3% Shiraz) spent 18 months in two-thirds French and one-third a combination of American and Hungarian oak. An opaque purple color accompanies classic aromatics of asphalt, black currants, vanillin, flowers, underbrush, and new saddle leather. This seriously-endowed effort reveals supple tannin as well as a degree of accessibility, but it should age nicely for 10-12 years.  Score - 90.  (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2005)

It should drink well for 5-7 years.  Score - 89.  (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2005)

GOATS DO ROAM IN VILLAGES  2004
WO Coastal Region

Tasting Note: Puns are one thing, but I'm also a sucker for good wines, and this one, happily is quite an intense, tasty thing. A blend of syrah and pinotage, this muscled-up red comes on strong with blackberry and bitter chocolate aromas, followed by out-front flavors of plum, blackberry and dark fruits, with that typical South African hint of ash lurking in the background. It's a big, chewy wine, with plenty of tannin and acidity that really is ready made to pair with a hearty stew.  (Robert Mayfield, www.statesmanjournal.com, Jan. 12 2006)

THE WOLFTRAP  2005
WO Western Cape

Here's the perfect wine for your Hallowe'en feast or perhaps a late, late screening of 'An American Werewolf in London'! This blend of Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Viognier is named for a 250-year-old wolf trap that was erected by early pioneers in the Franschoek foothills who mistakenly thought wolves inhabited South Africa. Perhaps better safe than sorry, but it seems howlingly funny now.
