British Columbia
(Century Distilling Co.)
Tasting Note: Old gold coloured whisky reveals floral, spicy rye,
lemon-vanilla cake and corn syrup notes. Really smooth and elegant, with
the oak age giving it more pull to take the sweet edge off the grain. Score

The Greeks use ouzo in the same manner the French use pastis. Both cultures
add chilled water, giving it a beautiful milky quality. Enjoy it with

VILMOS
PEAR BRANDY
Hungary
(Zwack Unicum Co.)
Tasting Note: Zwack's famous Vilmos provides an exquisite experience.
It offers a harmonious balance of scent and flavour, which makes Vilmos
an unmistakable delicious drink. Vilmos's aroma is made using pear distillates
aged for several years. It's also superb as a long drink where the sense
of being refreshed is coupled with the fruity flavour. You can drink it
with pear nectar, however also worthwhile trying it with the nectars of
apples and peaches. (www.budapesthotelstart.com)

Sato No Homare translates as 'pride of the village'. Sudo Honke was founded in 1160 and is the oldest active brewery in Japan, if not the world.
Tasting Note: An elegant, super-premium saké. A pleasingly light and fruity nose, laced with violets, strawberries, pear and grape. A refined and clear flavor, yet settled and deep. Semi-dry with a superbly clean finish. (www.tastersguildny.com, July 24, 2003)

LUSTAU 'PENÍNSULA'
PALO CORTADO
Solera Reserva
Tasting Note: One of my favorites among the drier, lighter-styled
Sherries is the non-vintage Palo Cortado Península. Medium
amber-colored, with great balance, intensity, and acidity as well
as a scorched earth/roasted nut character, it is a stunning, flavorful
yet light, crisp Sherry. Score - 92. (Robert

BLANDY'S 'DUKE
OF CLARENCE' RICH MADEIRA
(Madeira Wine Co.)
Tinta Negra Mole (TNM), the most commonly planted vinifera vine
on Madeira, makes excellent wines especially those designed for
early enjoyment, such as this 'Duke of Clarence'. Julie Arkel,
of the Sunday Express, said about a bottling from 1999 "this tasty,
well-priced, pudding all-rounder is softly sweet with nuances of
honey and raisin. A great buy and a great taste." Since Blandy's
aims to replicate the same flavours in each bottling, expect more
of the same here. Enjoy with fruit cakes, soft cheeses or chocolate
pudding.

NIEPOORT 'LBV'
PORT 2000
Late Bottled Vintage, Btld. 2005
Tasting Note: Dark violet colour suggests there is plenty of
youth yet. The aromas recall blackberry, blueberry, plum compote
and spice. It is sweet, rich, chunky, intense and voluptuous. It
is great now, but will also reward 1-2 years in a cellar. Decanting
recommended. (VINTAGES panel, April 2006)

QUINTA
DO NOVAL 10 YEARS OLD TAWNY PORT
Btld. 2006
A ten-year-old, bottled in 2003, was praised by James Suckling
as "Full-bodied and very sweet, with plenty of toffee and dried
fruit character on the finish. Really yummy. " (www.winespectator.com,
Sept. 15, 2003). Since the house aims to make each bottling
of their non-vintage dated ports similar in style and structure,
expect more of the same in this 2006 bottling.

aromas of ripe apple, and orange citrus with some nutty complexity.
Rich but with good balancing acidity, very smooth. Very good to excellent

needs chilling. Score - 87. (Steve

PENFOLDS 'BIN
128' SHIRAZ 2004
Coonawarra, South Australia
'Bin 128' is one of the most distinctive reds produced by Penfolds.
Launched in 1962, it reflects the unique climate and growing conditions
of South Australia's Coonawarra district as well as the elegant style
of cool-climate Shiraz. Since the 1980 vintage, 'Bin 128' has been aged
solely in French oak which highlights the pepper, spice and floral characteristics
that define the style of this 'bin'. Expect a zesty and spicy Shiraz,
rich in small-berry fruit flavours and mouth-filling roundness. Ideally
suited to duck or roast leg of lamb.
