Brandy
STRAVECCHIO BRANCA
Veneto, Italy
(Fratelli Branca Distillerie)

Grappa
NONINO GRAPPA MONOVITIGNO RIBOLLA CRU
Fruili, Italy

Nonino's Monovitigno single-vineyard grappas were first created in 1973. The Ribolla grape is floral with a fine acid bite and by using only the best fruit from prime vineyards, the end result is stellar. The techniques employed by Nonino allow the distillate to replicate the flavour and aroma profile of the grape. Each bottle is hand-blown, numbered and dated. For example, this lot was distilled in 2003.

011338    500 mL    $99.95

NONINO MONOVITIGNI SINGLE GRAPES GRAPPA
Pinot-Chardonnay/Malvasia/Moscato, Friuli, Italy

Nonino's 'Single Grapes' grappa is made by distilling the Chardonnay (locally called Pinot-Chardonnay), Malvasia and Moscato separately. This allows the essence of each grape to come to the fore before the final blending. A perfect digestif after a rich meal.

011361    500 mL    $35.95

NONINO GRAPPA MONOVITIGNO IL MOSCATO
Veneto, Italy

Nonino was the first to distill pomace and fresh fruit only at harvest time, and amongst the first to distill strictly from fresh juice, and not just the pomace. It is this technique, and the use of small copper stills, that allows this Moscato spirit (Muscat, to the French) to retain so much of the aromatic richness for which the grape is known.

736603    700 mL    $52.95

Rum
DEMERARA EL DORADO 12-YEAR-OLD SPECIAL RESERVE RUM

Madeira
BLANDY'S 5-YEAR-OLD BUAL MADEIRA

Port
DOW'S CHRISTMAS RESERVE PORT
(Symington Family Estates)

Unsurprisingly, Dow's creates this Port in limited quantities to be enjoyed over the Christmas season. With so many rich desserts, cheeses, fresh nuts and other delights of the holidays, we're pleased to offer this equally rich wine.

008573    (S)   750 mL    $19.95

FONSECA GUIMARAENS VINTAGE PORT  1987
Btld. 1989

Nineteen eighty-seven was not a universally 'called year' for Port, meaning many producers were not satisfied enough with the year to make a Vintage Port. Certain houses, such as Fonseca, were more than pleased with the results. When they reviewed it in 1989, the Wine Spectator scored it a 90, calling it "classy", "very ripe" and "full-bodied". The advantage for the consumer when a port producer gets it right in a undeclared year is that the product tends to mature sooner than a declared year. This 19-year-old is ready to drink, but remember to decant it.

009605    (S)   375 mL    $37.95

QUINTA DO NOVAL LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORT  2000
Unfiltered, Btld 2006

Though most LBVs do not require decanting. This wine is made in a more traditional, unfiltered style, so decanting is strongly recommended. It is best enjoyed with richer desserts or mature cheeses.

677815    (S)   750 mL    $23.95

Dessert Wine
COMMANDARIA ST. NICHOLAS
Cyprus
(Etko Ltd.)

Tasting Note: ... What a gorgeous wine - close to perfection. [.] Absolutely seamless and elegant on the palate, sweet and warm but so well balanced it almost texturally disappears into ethereal flavours. Excellent to outstanding length. If you must have this with food try nuts, dried fruit and cheese, but please take a moment to experience it all by itself. Score - 96.  (David Lawrason, Wine Access, 'First In Line E-Report', Nov. 2004)

SONOMA-CUTRER CHARDONNAY  2004
Estate Bottled, Russian River Ranches

"... a wine panel from The New York Times held its finger up to the chardonnay wind recently to see how it was blowing. We decided to focus on two somewhat overlapping appellations in Sonoma County, the Russian River Valley and the Sonoma Coast ... We chose these appellations because they have been two of the prime sources in recent years for some of the best and most interesting California chardonnays ... Several bottles in our top 10 exhibited a leaner style, with some pronounced mineral characteristics that I found very attractive. These included ... the 2004 Russian River Ranches from Sonoma-Cutrer." (Eric Asimov, The New York Times, June 28, 2006)

DOMAINE DE CHAMP DE COUR MOULIN-A-VENT  2004
AC
(Mommessin)

Single vineyard Moulin-à-Vent Gamay, such as this, are generally more intensely flavoured than other Beaujolais Gamays. Yields are kept to a minimum which results in maximum flavours in the finished wines. Moulin-à-Vent's terroir is also conducive to creating what many consider the region's best wines. This vintage of Champ de Cour exhibits aromas of spring flowers, red berry, black cherry and spice. The wine is exuberant and richly structured. It is adaptable enough to match both red meats and grilled salmon or swordfish.

This 100% Cabernet Franc is fermented in stainless steel then transfered to French barriques (25% new) for 5 months. TOMMASI VIGNETO LE FORNACI  2005

It is gently dry with an unexpected creaminess for such a normally acidic grape. Enjoy it with grilled white fish, turkey or antipasti.

BERTANI AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA VALPANTENA  2002
DOC, Villa Arvdedi

To be honest it is not easy to grasp the stature of these wines. Other products have accustomed us to being occasionally surprised by muscular, vigorous wines. But conscientious tasters continue to try and understand these delightful bottles on a more intimate level, and to grasp that often it is just the slight of nuances - of personality, style or territorial expression - that makes a wine great. These are the features that can be found in Bertani wines. (Gambero Rosso Italian Wines 2006) The elegant Amarones of Bertani are excellent matches for stuffed veal tenderloin or filet mignon.

REMO FARINA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE RIPASSO  2003

Fruity and eminently drinkable, Farina's Valpol Ripasso is more intense than standard Valpolicella because of the addition, after initial fermentation, of the grape skins used for Amarone to the wine. This begins a second fermentation, deepening the flavour and raising the alcohol. This is an excellent choice for roasted meats, wild game as well as mature cheeses.

CHÂTEAU PONTET-CANET  2003

This is Pontet-Canet's golden age. Alfred Tesseron's acquistion of this legendary Fifth Growth property in 1994 elevated it to the classic status it so deservedly occupies today. Neil Martin of wine-journal.com stated, "Here was a Château taking one step up the heirachy, a Château finally challenging the aristocracy of Pauillac". Robert Parker Jr. (April 2006) scored this wine 95.

CHÂTEAU BELGRAVE  1996
AC Haut-Médoc, 5e Cru

Château Belgrave has been doing everything right since Dourthe acquired it in 1980. They revitalized everything and hired the legendary winemaker, Michel Rolland, to consult. With the 1996 vintage, the turnaround was complete. Calling the '96 a "very well-made fifth growth", Wine Spectator went on to say it was "dark-colored, with lots of ripe berry, vanilla, spice and cinnamon". This wine is truly at its prime.
