Grappa
ANTINORI TIGNANELLO GRAPPA
Tuscany, Italy

Grappa Tignanello is obtained from the distillation of the skins and pips (pomace) from the Sangiovese and Cabernet used in the production of 'Tig'. After pressing, the pomace is immediately taken to the distillery. This procedure guarantees that distillation is carried out using the best quality marc possible - high in alcohol and more importantly rich with aromatic characteristics. A very careful selection is then made of the different lots of grappa and only the ones with the most elegance and balance are then blended and bottled (adapted from www.brownderby.com).

018820    500 mL    $82.95

BANFI GRAPPA DI BRUNELLO
Tuscany, Italy

To make this award-winning Grappa, Banfi distills the pomace from their exceptional Brunello di Montalcino wines. The Sangiovese character really comes through in this spirit's bright fruitiness and dry cedar tones. It makes an excellent digestif.

011403    700 mL    $85.95

JACOPO POLI GRAPPA DA VINACCE DI SASSICAIA
Tuscany, Italy

Since San Guido (the owners/makers of Sassicaia) do not own a distillery, they contract grappa specialists Jacopo Poli to create this stellar eau-de-vie. Poli distills the Sassicaia must, creating a grappa that beautifully echoes the Super Tuscan classic. A perfect gift for Sassicaia's many ardent admirers.

YOSHI NO GAWA GOKU-JO GINJO SAKÉ

At a recent event, the head of the Yoshi No Gawa Sake Company, Koji Kawakami, conducted a tasting of several sakés matched with a variety of fine Japanese dishes. This orange and magnolia-scented saké was paired with strip loin and toro (fatty tuna belly) tartar. The elegant flavours and creamy textures were a match made in heaven. The saké's crisp finish revived the palate for each mouthful. Enjoy it slightly chilled in a conventional wine glass.

New at VINTAGES
HUTCHESON VINTAGE PORT  1991
Btld. 1993
(Hutcheson, Feuerheerd & Associados)

Tasting Note: From one of the great vintages of the 1990s, this 1991 still posseses a vibrant medium ruby-colour. The aromas suggest berry, cherry compote, lilac, coffee grounds and tea leaves. It's maturing with controlled sweetness and a fine tannin grip. It is approachable now, if decanted, with Stilton or dark chocolate, but will easily age another 5+ years.  (VINTAGES panel, April 2006)

013466    (S)   750 mL    $45.95

FONSECA LBV PORT  2000
Late Bottled Vintage, Btld. 2005
(Fonseca Guimaraens)

From one of the greatest Port vintages in the last 20 years comes this fine 2000 LBV. Although not indicated, it is likely bottled unfiltered, so it is recommended that this be decanted before serving. After spending five years in barrel before bottling, it is ready-to-drink, but can also reward 1-4 years in a cellar.

467894    (S)   750 mL    $22.95

PORTAL LÁGRIMA PORT

Lágrima means 'tears'. This sweet, delicate Port is often referred to as 'tears of Christ', which is why Christ is depicted on the label. Portal crafts this white Port using a variety of the white grape varieties of Douro, and ages the finished wine for 3-5 years in oak. This style of Port is popular with the Portuguese community, especially around Christmas time. Enjoy it chilled as a dessert, or pair it with a variety of mature or blue-veined cheeses.

SMITH WOODHOUSE 10 YEARS OLD TAWNY PORT
Btld. 2006
(Symington Family Estates)

Aged for a full 10 years in the Smith Woodhouse cellars, this Tawny is fined and filtered and therefore will not require decanting. Once opened, it will last 3-4 weeks.

Dessert Wine
DOMAINE DE COYEAUX MUSCAT DE BEAUMES DE VENISE  2002
AC

Tasting Note: Exceptionally pretty, ripest white peach aroma and taste to this lightly fortified white wine, made by stopping the fermentation of extremely ripe Muscat grapes with spirits. Lighter, fresher, and purer than typical wines from this region near Avignon. A good sipper when Port seems too potent. (Peter Hellman, www.nysun.com, March 30, 2005)

INNISKILLIN OAK-AGED VIDAL ICEWINE  2005
VQA Niagara Peninsula

Tasting Note: The 2005 Vidal oak-aged ice wine was more caramel and buttery, with smooth rich flavors of apricot and honey. It only spends 3 months in oak, but it's enough to give extra weight to the flavors. This goes very well with crème brûlée. (Lisa Shea, www.wineintro.com, Sept. 27, 2006)

RODNEY STRONG CHALK HILL CHARDONNAY  2004
Sonoma County, Estate Vineyards

Tasting Note: ... this is another killer on the nose. It's like a perfume of Chardonnay. Pears, apples, tangy tropical fruit and smoke aromas, followed by rich, creamy-crisp flavors with a wonderful brace of acid, minerality and prominent citrus-grapefruit notes. The minerality lingers long in the throat ... Still, it's both creamy and racy on the palate - elegant, with a ton of complexity. Take it proudly to a dinner party where you know such a wine will be appreciated. Chill it till the sweat pours off the bottle. (Sandra Silfven, The Detroit News, 'The Wine Report', June 13, 2006)

Tasting Note: From Contra Costa County, this is a wow of a wine. Deep, harmonious fruit with pungent spice, dark cocoa, mint and sweet earth. Warm berry flavors and long aftertaste that's a little "steely." Will soften further, but delicious now with full-throttle winter fare. Wine of the Month
RODNEY STRONG CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2003
Sonoma County

As one of the winemaking pioneers in Sonoma, the late great Rodney Strong would be proud of this stylish Cabernet. Sourced from hillside vineyards in the warmer Alexander Valley region, this wine has a lot of depth and finesse.

Tasting Note: You could drink this now in a pinch, but why, when you can hold it two or three years and get more out of it when the tannins are more integrated? Big and dry, with generous dark fruit and spice, it's a great match for a steak, grilled to medium-rare perfection.  Score - ****1/2 (out of 5).  (Rod Phillips, www.winecurrents.com, June 2006)

RUTHERFORD HILL MERLOT  2002

Tasting Note: A very tasty and rich merlot that would match a range of grilled food. Plenty of lift on the nose with concentrated black cherry, plum and chocolate. Impressive structure and length. Best 2005-2010. Score - 90. (Jefferson Davis, Wine Access, 'First In Line E-Report', Sept. 2005)

Tasting Note: Outgoing aromas of ripe cherries, wild flowers and an underlying edge of tart berries filled out by creamy oak add up to a flashy start for this fairly full-bodied wine. It mixes weight and bright energy on the palate, and its medium-depth flavors follow right in step with its aromatic beginnings. A slight acid snap shows as the wine finishes. Score - 90. GRAN LURTON CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2004
Gran Reserva, Mendoza
(Bodega Lurton)

The 'Frères Lurton' produce world-class wine around the globe and Bodega Lurton, in Mendoza, Argentina, is one of their most successful ventures. The fruit for the wines in their Reserva range is sourced from selected old vine parcels (some as old as 100 years) from neighbouring estates to augment their own young vines. This helps build wines with striking character. Look for a lovely combination of rich plum and currant fruit and striking tanins. Enjoy with roast beef.

SANTA CAROLINA BARRICA SELECTION PETIT VERDOT  2004
Rapel Valley

This wine won a Grand Gold Award, a top honour at the prestigious Hyatt Cata d'Or Awards in Chile earlier this year.

Tasting Note: Intriguing aromas of brioche and cherry set up this medium-bodied red. The addition of 15% Syrah gives it oomph as the palate is treated to structure and grip along with the rich sweet (14.5% alcohol) black fruit flavours. Deftly handled oak, fairly low acidity and the fruit forward flavours coalesce into another of winemaker Sven Bruchfeld's trade mark gems. This offers good value and suggests a multiple purchase.  Score - **** (out of 5). (Vic Harradine, www.winecurrent.com, July 8, 2006)

D'ARENBERG THE COPPERMINE ROAD CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2004
McLaren Vale, South Australia, Basket Pressed

Tasting Note: Long, firm and tightly focused, this lean, sinewy but powerfully fruited cabernet simply needs time. Its brooding, rather closed bouquet of dark plum and berries, bitumen and dark olives reveals some floral perfume while its tightly muscled and astringent palate suggests deeply ripened fruit and baked earth. Tasting Note: Elderton's flagship cuvee, the awesome 2002 Command Shiraz, is a classically Australian, bigger than life, extroverted, flamboyant effort boasting huge notes of smoky oak, new saddle leather, roasted meats, blackberry liqueur, and creme de cassis. It is an enormously chewy, unctuously textured Shiraz that should age for 10-15 years.  Score - 94-96. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2005)

Ready to drink now and over the next three or four years. (www.wineskinny.com, April 2006.)

KATNOOK ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2003
Coonawarra, South Australia

Aussie wine expert Jeremy Oliver awarded the 2003 vintage a score of 90, praising it as a "finely constructed and elegant Coonawarra cabernet whose vibrant aromas of blackberries, mulberries, and cedar reveal nuances of dried herbs and a hint of capsicum, with earthy and slightly muddy undertones ...". Enjoy this stylish and complex Cab with rare beef dishes now or put it away in the cellar for 5-7 years.

Tasting Note: The bargains continue with the 2003 Grenache/Shiraz Killerman's Run (60% of the former and 40% of the latter), which was aged in old American and French hogsheads for two years prior to being bottled unfiltered. Its dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by plenty of sweet kirsch and blackberry fruit intermixed with damp earth and pepper. Fleshy, with excellent intensity and a long, heady finish, this superb Australian red is a fabulous bargain. Moreover, it should drink well for 4-5 years or longer. Score - 91. PETER LEHMANN THE FUTURES SHIRAZ  2003
Barossa, South Australia

New Zealand's Cuisine magazine (July 2006) placed this at number 5 in their Top 10 ranking of Australian Shiraz.

Tasting Note: Peter Lehmann's wines are among our favourites. The Futures Shiraz is typically generous and likeable, and there's a finesse that's lacking in the brawnier Barossa Shirazes. Ripe fruit and subtle oak are interwoven seamlessly, and it has tons of flavour and lovely smooth texture.  Score - ***** (out of 5). (Cuisine NZ, July 2006)

ST HALLETT CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2004
Barossa, South Australia

While the Barossa Valley area is often noted for its Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon vines have also thrived there for over a century. St Hallett's winemakers Stuart Blackwell and Matt Grant employ a combination of traditional techniques with the latest technologies to craft this quintessentially Barrosan Cab. Stuffed with cassis and berry fruit flavours with notes of mint and chocolate this medium full-bodied wine is ready to drink with hearty venison stew or old-fashioned pot roast.
