Irish Whiskey
INISHOWEN IRISH WHISKEY
(Andrew A. Watt & Co.)

Inishowen Irish Whiskey is a unique blend whiskey as it is very lightly peated. It contains a number of different types of whiskey which include peated malt whiskey, malt whiskey and grain whiskey. Inishowen derives its name from the beautiful Northern Inishowen peninsula, situated in Co. Donegal in the west of Ireland. This region was well known as a prime location for the illicit production of the highly esteemed Poteen. In fact the bulk of the illicit trade was located in the Inishowen region and by 1822 there were as many as 800 stills in operation. (www.cooleywhiskey.com)

DUNCAN TAYLOR'S AULD REEKIE 12 YEARS OLD ISLAY SINGLE MALT

Auld Reekie (old smelly) was the affectionate name given to the smoke-covered city of Edinburgh of the 18th century. During that era, over 400 illicit stills were operating in the city – their smoky presence hidden by the smoke emitted from everywhere else. Each cask of Duncan Taylor's ‘Auld Reekie' is specifically selected for its strong smoky/iodine/peat character.

Clean fruit, including the juiciest of plums, balance nicely. Finish: Remains warm and lingering with more emphasis on simple vanilla and malt. Comment: Rich by Glenmorangie standards and very warming. Score - 8 1/4 (out of 10). (Jim Murray, Whisky Magazine, Nov. 2000)

BERINGER PRIVATE RESERVE CHARDONNAY  2004
Napa Valley

Tasting Note: The 2004 Chardonnay Private Reserve is a surprisingly tightly knit Chardonnay by Beringer's standards, with notes of lemon oil, orange blossom, apple pie, and brioche in a full-bodied style with some tropical fruit but good underlying acidity and fleshy texture. It seems that Sbragia has cut back on the oak, and the wine shows more of a steely minerality than in the past. It is still a big, relatively extroverted Chardonnay to consume over the next 2-3 years. Score - 92. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2005)

FINCA FLICHMAN EXPRESIONES RESERVE SHIRAZ/CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2004
Mendoza

Tasting Note: The Expressions range is a beautifully and handsomely packaged new line from Luis Cabral de Almeida, the new winemaker at Finca Flichman, which he hopes will display his terroir. From 28-year-old vineyards in Tupungato, the wine spends eight months in a mix of French and American oak. The nose has a lovely blackcurrant pastille and juicy cherry ripeness, with little nuances of violet and blueberry pie. On the palate this shows lovely fruit: it is dry and savoury, with tannins immediately gripping the sides of the mouth, and a coffee and woodsmoke oak note adding to the dry, food-friendly appeal. But the fruit really comes through, with a concentration of black berries and some clove and pepper notes, with a very nicely balanced and long finish. Very impressive. Very good indeed/excellent.
