Tequila
4 COPAS TEQUILA REPOSADO 100% DE AGAVE
 (Tequilera La Quemada)

Tasting Note: Attention to detail sets 4 Copas above an increasingly crowded field, whether it's its strikingly illustrated bottles or the meticulously crafted liquid inside. The Reposado's peppery nose and easy-drinking softness make it closer to a single malt scotch than a tequila, though there's still that subdued agave flavour. (Toro, Summer 2006)

Think chocolate-dipped strawberries on a late spring day. There may not be a better way to transport you out of the winter duldrums than this aptly-named fruit/chocolate wine. Its nose is quite powerful, but the palate is beautifully balanced between ripe strawberry and elegant chocolate. It is vibrant, yet never cloying. Match it, nicely chilled, to a fruit tray or lighter cheesecakes.

ROCCA DI FABBRI SAGRANTINO DI MONTEFALCO  2002
DOCG

Sagrantino is an indigenous grape that makes Umbria's most distinctive wines. Deep ruby red with concentrated aromas of cherry, licorice and a touch of mint, this medium-full bodied wine is well-structured with a good balance of acidity and moderate tannins. Match it tonight to grilled leg of lamb or it will definitely reward 3-5 years in a cellar.

MASI SEREGO ALIGHIERI VALPOLICELLA DELL'ANNIVERSARIO 650  2001
DOC

In 1353, Pietro Alighieri, son of the famous Florentine poet Dante (of Inferno fame), purchased the lands that are still at the heart of this property. For 20 generations, the family have tended vineyards on this land. To mark this 650th anniversary (the wine was released in 2003), the descendants sourced the best grapes to make this very limited and special wine. Enjoy it at your next family gathering.

PLANURA RESERVA TINTO  2003
Vinhos Regional Alentejano

The principal grape here is Touriga Nacional, known as one of the great grapes of Port. Throughout many regions of Portugal, winemakers have discovered that it makes terrific, deeply-coloured, full-flavoured dry table wines. To balance out the wine, Planura also uses Aragonês (a.k.a. Tempranillo) and Alicante Bouschet. All the wines are barrel-aged to add another layer of complexity. Try this wine with spicy beef dishes or game meats.

BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS ALION  2002
DO Ribera del Duero

Tasting Note: The new Ribera del Duero estate offers a contrast with [Alion-owner] Vega Sicilia; this is the modern face of Ribera del Duero, as opposed to the classical tradition of Vega Sicilia. The wine is pure Tinto Fino [Tempranillo] aged in new French oak, to make a ripe rounded oaky wine, with youthful berry fruit. It was very polished and elegant. (Rosemary George MW, www.wine-pages.com, June 2003)

MIGUEL TORRES SAN VALENTÍN GARNACHA  2005
DO Catalunya

Garnacha (Grenache, in France) is the second most popular red grape in Spain after Tempranillo. In lively wines such as this, it produces fruit-forward, structured wines that are excellent for a wide variety of meals. The red companion to the white ‘San Valentín' (673988). The perfect two-some for Valentine's Day. The red wine is corked sealed while the white is screw-topped.

SELECCIÓN DE TORRES CELESTE TINTO  2004
DO Ribera del Duero

Tasting Note: A modern, mid-weight 100% tempranillo grown at higher altitude in the drier Ribera region (most Torres wines are from the more maritime Penedès region). Shows bright, ripe blackberry, brambly fruit mindful of zinfandel with coffee, mocha from new oak, and youthfully leesy notes. Medium-full bodied, fairly dense and soft with some finesse. Bitter chocolate on the finish. Very good to excellent length. Best 2008 to 2012.  Score - 89. (David Lawrason, Wine Access, First In Line E-Report, Oct. 28, 2006)

SCALA DEI LA CONRERIA  2005

Founded in 1163 by Carthusian monks, Scala Dei, means ‘ladder to God'. In 2002, Priorat became only the second Spanish region (after Rioja) to be elevated to the higher DOC (Denominación de Origen Calificada) designation. This highest category in Spanish wine law is reserved for regions that demonstrate well-above average winemaking and consistently higher grape prices. This strawberry/plum fruit-forward wine is an excellent companion for braised beef dishes.

DEL FIN DEL MUNDO MALBEC RESERVA  2004
Patagonia

‘Del Fin del Mundo' or ‘the end of the earth' is, essentially, where this winery is located. Patagonia, Argentina's cool climate growing region, was made famous by journalist Bruce Chatwin in his 1970s travel book In Patagonia.

Tasting Note: This is a terrific bargain, and worth stocking up on if your ... diet includes a lot of grilled red meat – the staple of the Argentinian diet. The fruit is ripe and concentrated, with black cherry and berry to the fore. It's well balanced with good tannic grip, and the finish is long, long, long. Drink it [now] and over the next two or three [years]. Score - ****1/2. (Rod Phillips, www.winecurrent.com, Aug. 5, 2006)

This wine is sourced from vineyards in Vista Flores, which is situated 1,100 meters above sea level, high in the Uco Valley of Mendoza. Hot days and cool nights allow the grapes to ripen slowly and fully. Rather than furrow irrigation, which is common in many Argentinian vineyards, these vineyards use drip irrigation. The wine is unfiltered, ensuring its rich character is preserved. This full-bodied wine has intensely ripe wild-berry character with hints of spice, along with grippy tannins and a long finish. Enjoy with roasted meats or game dishes.

CHAKANA BONARDA  2005
Mendoza

There is some debate as to the identity of the Bonarda grape grown in Argentina. It is one of the most commonly planted red grapes, but may be different than the three varieties known as Bonarda that are grown in Italy. Some believe that Argentinian Bonarda is actually Charbono, another variety brought here by Italian immigrants. These wines are light, ripe and fruity, making them an ideal partner for gourmet hamburgers, pizza or sausages.

Tasting Note: Dominio del Plata's 2006 Crios de Susana Balbo is a brilliant example of the Spanish-in-origin Torrontés, Argentina's principal dry white. Its floral scents bring to mind a perfume shop. Its citric flavors are delectable. [Winemaker] Ms. [Susana] Balbo's torrontés, from Mendoza, incorporates characteristics of young, light riesling, alberiño and viognier. Given a quick chill, it is a show-stopping aperitif. DO Limari Valley

This outstanding Shiraz is sourced from Chile's northernmost wine region, the Limari Valley. With only 80-100 mm of rainfall per year, irrigation is a necessity in the semi-arid climate. The valley runs east-west from the Andes to the Pacific Ocean, which provides cool coastal breezes and morning fog to help moderate the heat.
