Lifted pear, lemon and mineral aromas suggest riesling dominates, perhaps with dashes of vidal and/or gewurz. It's light, barely off-dry and very fresh with tart lemony acidity and moderate to good length. Serve chilled with fish and chips; no kidding. (David Lawrason, www.winerytohome.com, May 2006)

BYRON PINOT NOIR  2004

Semillon is a specialty of the Hunter Valley region, where winemakers often craft remarkable wines that last for years, if not decades. Tasting Note: … “Dr. L.” smells sweetly of white peach and honeysuckle, combines subtle creaminess of texture with juicy peach, lime, and tangerine, and lays out a satisfyingly rich yet delicate and invigorating finish in which noticeable sweetness, nevertheless, does not become overbearing. Even more so than in some other recent years, this offers terrific value. Score - 89. (David Schildknecht, www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2006)

DARTING GEWÜRZTRAMINER KABINETT  2005
QmP, Dürkheimer Nonnengarten, Estate Btld.

With such a German name, it's surprising that Gewürztraminer is still a minority in the vineyards of the country. Kurt Darting has created some of the Pfalz's finest examples. The wine has classic lychee, grapefruit and spice tones. A perfect partner for intense, flavourful dishes such as chicken vindaloo.

MAZZOLADA TOCAI CLASSICO  2005
DOC Lison-Pramaggiore

Tocai is the old northern Italian name for Sauvignonasse, the most widely-planted white grape in nearby Friuli. Although it contains some of the genetic markers of Sauvignon Blanc, it is not technically related to it.

Tasting Note: Quite aromatic for the variety, with mirabelle plum, citrus, candied fruit and lanolin dominating. It is dry, round and soft with a medium body and surprisingly long finish. Match it to seafood crêpes. (VINTAGES panel, June 2006)

LA VALENTINA MONTEPULCIANO D'ABRUZZO SPELT  2001

Tasting Note: The 2001 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Spelt, very penetrating and intense in its aromas of plum and blackberry fruit, minerals, and Mediterranean brush, is equally long and vigorous on the palate, firm in its texture and with slightly grainy tannins which suggest that the wine needs a bit of bottle time and patience. Drink: 2007-2016. Score - 91. (Daniel Thomases, www.erobertparker.com, April 2006)

BERNARD DEFAIX CHABLIS CÔTE DE LECHET  2004
AC, 1er Cru

Made from the same vineyard as Pommier Chablis Côte de Léchet 2004 (023747, $32.95), this is an excellent opportunity to see what different wineries can do with fruit from the same vineyard in the identical vintage.

Tasting Note: An ultra pure and still rather reserved lemon lime and white flower-infused nose merges into round yet delineated flavors that offer good richness and plenty of sap as well as a wonderfully intense and superbly persistent and moderately austere finish. The elegance here is notable as is the balance and this should be capable of at least a decade of life, perhaps longer if well stored. Drink 2009+.  Score - 91.  (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, Oct. 1, 2006)

LONG-DEPAQUIT CHABLIS LES VAILLONS  2004
AC, 1er Cru
(Albert Bichot)

Tasting Note: Aromas of grass, floral notes and spice that display excellent freshness and verve mix with rich, full and nicely concentrated middle weight flavors that deliver solid punch and persistence. This is quite forward and has relatively low acid for the vintage.  Score - 88.  (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, Oct. 1, 2006)

POMMIER CHABLIS BEAUROY  2004
AC, 1er Cru

Tasting Note: The wonderful 2004 Chablis Beauroy bursts from the glass with spiced minerals as well as hints of candied lemons. Medium- to full-bodied, it boasts a rich, deep character that is awash in creamed almonds, pears, and apples. This highly expressive wine also sports a long, fruit-filled finish. Drink it over the next 4 years.  Score - 91. (Pierre Rovani, www.erobertparker.com, June 2006)

POMMIER CHABLIS CÔTE DE LÉCHET  2004
AC, 1er Cru

Were it not for Domaine William Fèvre's extraordinary surge in quality in recent years, Domaine Isabelle et Denis Pommier would have to get the award for most improved Chablisien estate ... A young couple, they are committed [and] hard working. (Pierre Rovani, www.erobertparker.com, June 2006)

Tasting Note: Zesty minerals are found in the aromatic profile of the 2004 Chablis Cote de Léchet. Though less fleshy and seductive than the Beauroy, this wine impresses with its nuanced core of lively fruit flavors. Lemons, limes, minerals, sage, rosemary, liquefied stones, and spices can all be discerned in its deep, focused character. Projected maturity: now-2011. Score - 91. Côte de Beaune

BOUCHARD PÈRE & FILS BEAUNE CLOS SAINT-LANDRY  2004
AC, 1er Cru

A Premier Cru Beaune Chardonnay that displays exceptional balance between the fruit, wood and acid. The aromas are particularly enticing, suggesting melon, peach, gentle oak and straw. It is an open and very appealing wine that is approaching optimium drinkability. Give it a year or three to reach its perfect heights.

CHARTRON ET TRÉBUCHET PULIGNY-MONTRACHET  2002

Tasting Note: Having lost its green tinge, this wine is now a pretty pale yellow gold, suggesting it is attractively ageing. The aromas recall apple, melon, ripe pear and toast. It is dry, elegant, fresh and still very lively. In fact, it will reward further cellaring of 2-4 years. May also be enjoyed tonight with pan-seared sea scallops and sugar snap peas. BOUCHARD PÈRE & FILS BEAUNE CLOS DE LA MOUSSE  2004

BOUCHARD PÈRE & FILS CÔTE DE BEAUNE-VILLAGES  2005

A food-friendly (veal tenderloin, roast vegetables), approachable, round Pinot Noir with aromas that suggest strawberry, earth and sweet oak tones. Bouchard is a master at creating wines from their own vineyards, plus sourcing quality fruit from a variety of superior growers. This Côte de Beaune-Villages is a fine example of the latter category.

BRUNO COLIN CHASSAGNE-MONTRACHET VIEILLES VIGNES  2004
AC

According to Burgundy expert Allen Meadows (www.burghound.com), “the [Bruno Colin] style leans moderately in the direction of the new world but these are wines of quality and distinctly different, again stylistically speaking, than what was crafted under the Michel Colin label”. Plump, robust, cherry jam-scented with a very pleasing structure, this Pinot Noir wine would be a good match for herb-stuffed roast chicken or grilled cornish hen.

MICHEL BOUZEREAU ET FILS BEAUNE LES VIGNES FRANCHES  2004
AC, 1er Cru

Tasting Note: Gorgeous ruby. A complex nose of subtle earth, red and black fruit nuanced with hints of violets leads to equally pure and quite fine red cherry-infused flavors that are very rich and notably ripe, all wrapped in a wonderfully intense and persistent finish that displays a background touch of wood. This is one stylish effort and while the tannins have not yet completely integrated on the finish, I very much like the overall potential. Drink 2009+. Score - 90. PRINCE FLORENT DE MÉRODE CORTON LES BRESSANDES  2004
AC, Grand Cru

Tasting Note: This too is really quite ripe with pretty if slightly less elegant than what I usually find with this wine as there is more earth and, curiously, less minerality than what is typical. The flavors are rich, full and sweet with a dusty, intense, mouth coating and persistent backend. I quite like this though be aware that the classic minerality of Bressandes is more muted than usual. Drink 2011+. Score - 90. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, April 1, 2006)

Belland described his 2004 reds as a cross between the tannic structure and austerity of 1998 with the alcoholic richness and generosity of the 2000's. (Allen Meadows, www.burghound.com, April 1, 2006)

Tasting Note: A silky and elegant wine with aromas of cranberry, sour cherry, sweet spice and a hint of spice. Dry with a soft, fruity core. It is an excellent value and is a good choice for beef bourguignon (in it and with it). (VINTAGES panel, April 2006)

ROUX PÈRE & FILS POMMARD FREMIERS  2004

Tasting Note: A pretty, layered fruit bouquet, especially of strawberry, leads off this wine. It is followed by beetroot and autumn leaves. It is dry and supple with a very good tannin structure and nice acid core. Enjoy it tonight with rare beef or consider giving it up to three years in a cellar. (VINTAGES panel, March 2006)
