SEGURA
VIUDAS BRUT
RESERVA HEREDAD
With Gift Tin
Tasting Note: Regal in presentation, with its faux-metal label and
broad-based bottle. And in every edition it’s one of Spain’s
more elegant, serious cavas. Look for slightly toasted, charcoal-based
aromas backed by ripe apple and sweet citrus flavors. Very good feel and
length. One of Spain’s truly consistent high-end bubblies. Score

HENRY
OF PELHAM GAMAY (V)
VQA Niagara Peninsula
Henry of Pelham's Gamay has more stuffing in it than many of its light
and fruity Beaujolais counterparts. The nose suggests black cherry, flint
and wood smoke as well as a mellow earthiness. Dry, crisp and medium-bodied,
it's the wine to sip on while writing that first novel, or serve it up
with vegetarian lasagna or veal chops.

from grape varieties that are somewhat untraditional
for California like this fragrant Viognier. It's
full-bodied and rich with beautiful floral and
ripe peach flavours leading to a very long finish.

or curry dishes. If you are feeling adventurous,

IRONY
CHARDONNAY 2004
Napa Valley
(Life's Strange Twists Wine Co./ Delicato
Family Vineyards)
The wine's name is a reference to the twists
of fate that led two prodigal sons back home.
As young men, Jay and Chris Indelicato both left
the family winery to pursue other careers in the
big city. A series of happy accidents eventually
led the two back to their home, and today they
are the third generation to run Delicato. This
crowd-pleasing Chardonnay is loaded with apples,
peach and pear fruit, along with a measured amount
of toasty oak character. It has a smooth, creamy
texture and a medium long finish. A fantastic
value!

CAIN
CONCEPT 2003
The Benchland, Napa Valley
The 2003 is comprised of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 9%
Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot.
Tasting Note:You might call this Cain’s
junior version of their famous Cain Five Bordeaux
blend. This one’s blended from up and down
the valley, and it’s exceptionally fine.
Dry and smooth, with richly textured tannins,
it shows ripe cherries, plums and currants, with
a spicy, earthy finish. Best now through 2013.

CLOS
PEGASE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2003
Napa Valley
Tasting Note: The Clos Pegase Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 is a textbook
example of Napa's best-loved varietal. Vibrant black cherry and plum aromas
pique the senses, while the wine's velvety texture paints the palate with
flavors of toasted oak, mocha and sweet tobacco. (Brett Anderson,
San Diego Magazine, Oct. 2006)

CLAY
STATION PETITE SIRAH 2004
Lodi
If you are unfamilliar with Petite Sirah, there are two things you need
to know: the grape is not related to Syrah and the wine is anything but
petite. This is a big, muscular wine with dense cherry, plum and blueberry
fruit flavours and notes of pepper and smoke. The dry tannins are fairly
intense, so rare or medium-rare beef would be the ideal match.

GRGICH
HILLS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2002
Napa Valley
Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2007, Grgich
Hills enjoys a reputation for producing wines
with quality, balance and longevity. The award-winning
2002 Cabernet lives up to that reputation. It
shows ample cherry and red currant fruit aromas
on the nose. Still developing, it's dry, impeccably
balanced with the red fruit flavours supported
by firm tannins and well-integrated French oak.
Enjoyable now, it should improve in the cellar
over the next 4-5 years.

L
DE LYETH CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2004
Sonoma County
(The Lyeth Estate)
The Lyeth (rhymes with 'teeth') estate was founded in 1981 by the late
Chip Lyeth. Lyeth built a solid reputation with his Bordeaux-styled wines
before his untimely death in a plane crash. Jean-Claude Boisset purchased
the brand and now carries on Lyeth's legacy. This 100% Cabernet is another
excellent value. Very approachable, it's deep and delicious and has loads
of red and black cherry fruit with some attractive floral notes and a
hint of oak.

RIDGE
GEYSERVILLE 2004
Sonoma County, Zinfandel/Carignane/Petite Sirah
Tasting Note: Of all the Zinfandels produced by this greatly respected
winery, none has stood out more than Geyserville over the years. Perhaps
it is the very high percentages of other grapes that are planted in the
vineyard and have found their ways into the wine. Indeed, in many years,
Geyserville has not reached the required 75% Zinfandel content needed to
bear the varietal name. That this edition does cross that barrier is not
to suggest that its character has changed much over the years. The wine
is still full in body, slightly fleshy in feel, noticeably deep in fruit
and perceptibly tight in its youth. It also screams to be put in the cellar
for three to six years. Score - 94. (Connoisseurs'
Guide to California Wine, January 2007)

TRINCHERO
FAMILY CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2004
Lake County
California's Lake County AVA is an up-and-coming region where wine lovers
can find some very good values, such as this eminently quaffable, berry/spicy-scented
and flavoured Cab. Usually a blend of regions, this is the first vintage
of Trinchero's Family Cab to be designated entirely Lake County, a tribute
to the region's expectional quality.

JOFFRÉ E
HIJAS GRAND MERLOT 2003
Valle de Uco, Mendoza
Tasting Note: A similar vinification for this Merlot as Joffré e
Hijas' Malbec, but a very different wine on the nose, with ripe, bloody,
quite jammy plum fruit that is bold and creamy, backed by a toasty oak
support. On the palate there's a broad, generous, mouthfilling fruit presence
with lots of damson and black cherry ripeness. It is fairly jammy, with
plenty of sweetness, and a suave, dark, chocolate and coffee bean depth.
Acidity is good, and although the fruit doesn't quite push through to the
finish, this is a fine merlot. Very good indeed. (Tom Cannavan,

NAVARRO
CORREAS GRAN RESERVA MALBEC 2003
The Correas family's history in Mendoza dates back to 1798. From the
mid 1800s to 1974 the family cultivated grapes for other wine producers,
but all that changed in 1975 when Don Edmundo Navarro Correas established
the family's own winery. Today, winemaker Juan Marco crafts exceptional
premium quality products like this rich and complex Malbec. Aged for 18
months in French oak, this well-balanced wine has dense flavours of dark
berry fruit and spices. Great with grilled meats or pasta in a zesty tomato
sauce.

LAPOSTOLLE CUVÉE ALEXANDRE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005
Estate Btld., Apalta Vineyard, Colchagua Valley
Casa Lapostolle is the only Chilean winery to have the talents of international
wine consultant Michel Rolland at its disposal. This muscular Cabernet
is hand-picked from the same 60-year-old vines as the winery's flagship
wine Clos Apalta. Big and brawny, it's full of blackberry, raspberry,
cocoa and toasty oak flavours, with firm tannins and a long finish. Decant
an hour before serving or cellar for 2-4 years.

CONO
SUR SOUTHERN CONE CABERNET SAUVIGNON RESERVE 2005
Maipo Valley
Tasting Note: All of the 2005 Cono Sur entry-level wines are showing
nicely, including this Cabernet. The nose is fairly floral and touched
up by lavender, while the palate is racy and defined by zesty red fruit.
It's kind of a throwback in that it emphasizes light fruit and acidity
over oak and heft. A Best Buy. Score - 87. (Michael
