DOMAIN DAY ONE SERIOUS PINOT NOIR  2004
Mt. Crawford, South Australia

Legendary winemaker, and Domain Day proprietor, Robin Day, retired after 30 years with one of Australia’s largest wine producers, Orlando Wyndham. Crawford, one of the coolest and most interesting areas in the Barossa. Day prefers to craft his Pinot in a fuller-style with more body and concentration than most. This Pinot is serious indeed with considerable depth and loads of plummy fruit mingling with some restrained oaky notes. Fresh and well-balanced, enjoy it over the next three years.

CHÂTEAU LACAPELLE CABANAC TRADITION  2004
AC Cahors

Most people think of Argentina when it comes to the Malbec grape. But it is in Cahors where the grape made its first significant impact. For some bizarre reason, the locals call it Auxerrois, although it has nothing to do with the white Auxerrois grape. After the phylloxera louse attack of the late 19th century destroyed all the Malbec, producers replanted with inappropriate grape varieties. A fortuitous killer frost in 1956 allowed the growers to correct this mistake and replant Malbec. This is a fine, inexpensive cellar starter, with firm tannins surrounding its plummy fruit. Or, enjoy it tonight with rare steak.

TOMMASI CHIARETTO  2006
DOC Bardolino Classico

Chiaretto, an Italian term for rosé, literally means ‘neither red nor white’. MARTÍN CÓDAX ALBARIÑO  2005
DO Rías Baixas

Albariño, one of the great white grapes of Spain (known as Alvarinho in Portugal), is not widely known in North America. It is distinctively aromatic with a profile almost like Viognier, but is frequently higher in acid and alcohol than that great white grape of the Northern Rhône. A natural partner for seafood dishes, this wine would also be an excellent palate fresher before a fine meal.

SOLÀ CLASSIC JOSEP BARCELÓ-VINYES  2004
DOQ Priorat

Priorat was elevated to DOQ status in 2000. It is only the second region to be accorded this distinction (the other is Rioja). The elevation resulted in stricter controls on yields, allowed varieties and winemaking techniques. Already well-respected in the wine world this change moved Priorat one rung further up the quality ladder. This wine, made with Garnacha (Grenache) and Mazuelo (Carignan), is an excellent example of that higher quality. It is round, ripe, intense and beautifully balanced. Enjoy it with robust cuts of meat.

DOC Bairrada, The Goat Tower

Fairview Winery (home of Goats do Roam) in South Africa is not the only winery in the world with a goat tower. Aveleda also has one for, as they say, 'the amusement of the goats'. The goats enjoying the tower is pictured on the label. The name, Follies, is misleading, as it certainly is not a folly. Aveleda has managed to take the fullness of flavour from the foreign Chardonnay, blend it with the spicy, honeyed local Maria Gomes (a.k.a.
