Champagne
PERRIER JOUËT BELLE EPOQUE CHAMPAGNE brut  1999
AC

... Belle Epoque is a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir and 5% Pinot Meunier. The strength of this prestige cuvée is finesse and elegance rather than power or fruit, so for this reason inexperienced critics have been known to discount Belle Epoque, having been underwhelmed on first tasting. Some have even accused Perrier Jouët of putting more effort in to the design of the bottle than the wine that goes into it. These critics have laid bare their lack of understanding of a wine that possesses impeccable balance, something far more valuable than powerful fruit. (www.winedoctor.com, March 2006)

BANFI ROSA REGALE  2005
DOCG Brachetto d’Aqui

TASTING NOTE: This is another favorite of chocaholics, especially those who prefer the dark and bittersweet varieties. It also works well on its own as a sensual aperitif. Rosa Regale is a sparkling wine with an enchanting, fruity character and flavors of raspberries and rose petals. It has a pretty pink color, lots of festive bubbles and delicate rose petals on the label. In addition to chocolate, Rosa Regale also goes well with a variety of fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, plus most desserts.  (Scott Cherry, Tulsa World, Feb. 7, 2007)

M. CHAPOUTIER DOMAINE TOURNON SHIRAZ  2004
Mount Benson, South Australia

Maison Chapoutier has long been a dominant producer in France’s Rhône valley but it is 7th generation winemaker Michel Chapoutier who has raised that status to legendary. His boundless energy, pioneering spirit and fascination with terroir inspired him to establish vineyards in Australia in the late 1990s. He has significantly raised the profile of the Mount Benson region with his Domaine Tournon vineyard. This Shiraz nicely balances the Aussie and Rhône styles with spicy, savoury aromas, lovely blackberry fruit flavours, terrific balance and a lingering finish.

THORN-CLARKE SHOTFIRE RIDGE QUARTAGE  2004
Barossa, South Australia

TASTING NOTE: This Barossa blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, malbec and petit verdot is a fine and harmonious wine that is clearly made to deliver plenty of flavour, but elegance and refinement. It offers a slightly meaty aroma of vibrant dark berry, plum and black olive-like fruit backed by dark chocolate/mocha oak, cloves, cinnamon and faint undertones of marzipan. Sumptuously flavoured yet smooth and silky, its deeply ripened dark berry and plum flavours reveal hints of treacle and a slightly herbal aspect. GOATS DO ROAM IN VILLAGES  2005
WO Coastal Region

The name may be light-hearted, but the wine is a serious blend of Shiraz, Pinotage, Mourvedre and a touch of Viognier. Copying here the best of both the northern and southern Rhône, Goats do Roam In Villages, is a fruit-forward wine with a beautiful spine of tannin and crisp acidity. Grüner Veltliner may be difficult for people to say (GROON-er VELT-lea-ner), but it is becoming one of the hippest and hottest wines on the market. It is dry and flavourful with a peppery or spicy overtone. It is a great match for many fish (especially salmon) and seafood dishes.

HUGEL GENTIL  2005
AC Alsace

Hugel’s Gentil is what is known as a field blend. In the past, some vineyards would be planted with a variety of different vines. To make life easier, the winery would pick all the fruit together and make it into a wine. The blend is usually a secret but, since this is Alsace, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Blanc would be a fairly accurate guess. A great match for seared scallops.

TASTING NOTE: ... Lively and loaded with apple and pear; dusty gravel notes add complexity.  Score - 91.  (The Wine News, March 2007)

BOUTARI SKALANI RED  2004
Regional Wine of Heraklion, Crete

Located at the heart of Crete, outside of the village of Skalani lies the southernmost of the Boutari estate vineyards. This single estate red wine is made with the indigenous Greek grapes Kotsifali and Mandelaria. The Kotsifali brings softeness to the powerful, forceful and occasionally tannic Mandelaria. Both these grapes are known for creating exceptional wines especially from Crete. Try it with lamb.

OCONE FALANGHINA TABURNO  2005
DOC

... [In the Benevento zone], producers such as Domenico Ocone actively pursue strictly organic farming, using only biological materials in the vineyards and doing much of the work by hand – “the old-fashioned, laborious way, the way the Greeks and Etruscans did it,” he jokes. “We knew we were on the right track when the little yellow birds began nesting in the vineyards,” he says. “Now they are a big part of our insect control.” (Tom Maresca, Quarterly Review of Wines, Winter 2006/07) Ocone is not officially organic or biodynamic, but they practice many if not all the edicts. Falanghina is a very fragrant, intensely flavoured white wine that is a fine natural partner for mildly spicy foods.

CASETTA ROERO ARNEIS  2005
DOCG

The Arneis grape is originally from Roero, a region of sandy conical hills on the bank of the Tanaro River in Piedmont. By the 1970s, this variety, sometimes known as white Barolo, had almost disappeared. It regained popularity in the 80s due to a resurgence of interest in Piedmontese whites. Crisp and refreshing with fresh citrus fruit flavours, zippy acidity and a long harmonious finish.

Villa Giada’s Moscato d’Asti is consistently expressive in its fruit flavours (particularly lemon, lime blossom, muscat grape, tangerine and peach). The frizzante character adds a liveliness to the wine that keeps the residual sweetness nicely in balance. Try with coffee-flavoured ice cream with fresh strawberries.

TENUTA SANT’ANTONIO MONTE CERIANI SOAVE  2005
DOC

Tenuta Sant’Antonio is owned and operated by the four Castagnedi brothers: Armando, Tiziano, Massimo, and Paolo. Their father owned a vineyard but sent the grapes he grew to a co-operative winegrowers’ association he founded. In 1989, the sons purchased 30 ha of land to add to their father’s original 20 ha and began producing their own wine. Having grown up in the vineyards, the Castagnedis continued their hands-on approach and now produce a line of highly-respected wines.

TRAVAGLINI GATTINARA  2001
DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The winery has other jewels in its crown, as the fabulous base Gattinara 2001 so eloquently proves in the best version we can remember. A pure, austere nose expresses the Gattinara territory, with liquorice and crushed roses from the nebbiolo grape and elegant streaks of eucalyptus, menthol and even acacia blossom. The long-lingering palate is lively and tangy, slightly held back by assertive tannins.  Score - Two Glasses (out of 3). (Gambero Rosso Italian Wines 2006)

ABBADIA ARDENGA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO  2001
DOCG

TASTING NOTE: Black almandine ruby with black reflections and slightly brownish rim. The bouquet is unusual, with flowers – a mixture of dried and violets – mingled with nutmeg spice and a fair amount of sea salt, with underlying dried plums, all supported by moderate balsamic acidity. On the palate it’s full, and bright, with lively cherry fruit that gains direction from brisk cherry acidity, and is supported by ample smooth tannins that lead into a fairly long bright cherry finish that again is supported by acidity and gains depth from some brambly bitterness. Pleasant; and will drink quite well with succulent red meats or stews; it also has the capacity to age well for a number of years.  Score - ** (out of 3). (Kyle Phillips, Italian Wine Review, April 3, 2006)

TASTING NOTE: Weighty yet bright, with aromas of charred hamburger, leather and plum/berry jam. Complex and interwoven on the palate, with kirsch, cassis, red plum and chocolate flavors. Finishes smooth and stylish. Textbook stuff; hold until 2007.  Score - 90.  (Michael Schachner, Wine Enthusiast, July 2005)

ANTINORI PIAN DELLE VIGNE BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO  2001

TASTING NOTE: Red-ruby. Musky aromas of dark cherry, earth, mocha and game. Dense, lively and a tad reduced, with focused flavors of dark berries, dark cherry, leather, cola, menthol and minerals. Finishes with substantial tongue-coating tannins that avoid coming off as hard. This boasts very good extract and weight, but I’m not sure I would have picked it as sangiovese.  Score - 90 (+?).  (Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, July/Aug. 2006)

TASTING NOTE: It has a seductive range of aromas. Woody notes are dominant but hints of violet and dried fruit also emerge. MAZZEI POGGIO ALLA BADIOLA  2005
IGT Toscana

Resembling a good Chianti Classico, this Sangiovese-domainated wine, with a 25% dollop of Merlot, exhibits ripe aromas of blackberry, spicy oak and a hint of black pepper. It is dry, very well-structured with a long, focused fruit/tannin/crisp finish. Try it with roast beef reheated Italian-style in a beef broth with onions and garlic.

POGGIO SALVI VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO  2003
DOCG

The blend here is 90% Prugnolo Gentile (a local name for Sangiovese), 5% Mammolo and 5% Canaiolo. Sangiovese gives the wine structure, finesse, cherry/berry fruitiness and an earthiness, the heavily perfumed red grape Mammolo brings a lovely aroma of violets to the finished wine and Canaiolo adds a certain softness to the final blend. The wines mature for 24 months in Slavonic 35 hectoliter barrels and then a further 6 months in bottle. It is fairly tannic, meaning it will definitely reward 3-5+ years in a cellar, or match it tonight to roast beef.
