Scotch Whisky
BOWMORE 16 YEARS OLD SHERRY
MATURED ISLAY SINGLE MALT   1990

Limited Edition, Btld. 2006

TASTING NOTE: No frills here, just pure, unadulterated Bowmore. This Islay whisky speaks of its location in a very pure and natural way. I find invigorating brine, seaweed, green olive, and fishnets, along with the classic Bowmore peat smoke. All these flavors are softened by gentle vanilla and honeyed malt, while background tropical fruit add complexity. Score - 93(Malt Advocate, First Quarter 2006).

Champagne & Sparkling Wine - May 26 Release
Champagne
PERRIER JOUËT BELLE EPOQUE CHAMPAGNE brut  1999
AC

... Belle Epoque is a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir and 5% Pinot Meunier. The strength of this prestige cuvée is finesse and elegance rather than power or fruit, so for this reason inexperienced critics have been known to discount Belle Epoque, having been underwhelmed on first tasting. Some have even accused Perrier Jouët of putting more effort in to the design of the bottle than the wine that goes into it. These critics have laid bare their lack of understanding of a wine that possesses impeccable balance, something far more valuable than powerful fruit. (www.winedoctor.com, March 2006)

BANFI ROSA REGALE  2005
DOCG Brachetto d’Aqui

TASTING NOTE: This is another favorite of chocaholics, especially those who prefer the dark and bittersweet varieties. It also works well on its own as a sensual aperitif. Rosa Regale is a sparkling wine with an enchanting, fruity character and flavors of raspberries and rose petals. It has a pretty pink color, lots of festive bubbles and delicate rose petals on the label. In addition to chocolate, Rosa Regale also goes well with a variety of fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, plus most desserts.  (Scott Cherry, Tulsa World, Feb. 7, 2007)

AC

The essential work that [winemaker] Guillaume [de Castelnau] has done here is to reverse many changes that have damaged Beaujolais over the past few decades, and to introduce many classic Burgundian techniques. ... The new Burgundian order of the day includes the introduction of hand-harvesting and careful grape selection in the field, and there is no bubblegummy carbonic maceration here, but cold soaking of grapes, fermentation with wild yeasts in open-top tanks, and long ageing in small oak barrels. It is fair to say that, between them, Jadot and Guillaume de Castelnau have brought about a revolution in Beaujolais. (Tom Cannavan, wine-pages.com, Jan. 2004).

CHÂTEAU DE CORNEILLA CUVÉE PRESTIGE   2004
AC Côtes-du-Roussillon

Customers have discovered that wines from the Côtes-du-Roussillon are both delicious and easier on the pocketbook than those from better known parts of France. Château de Corneilla's Cuvée Prestige is fashioned from 30% Mourvedre, 30% Syrah, 30% old-vine Carignan and 10% Grenache. It features lots of fruity scents and flavours - blue and blackberries, raspberries, cherries - with hints of spices and anisette. Complex but open and friendly. Match it to roast beef with grilled potatoes.

Corbières is the largest AC in the Languedoc. The stony soil of the region yields spicy, full-bodied wines, and this blend of Carignan, Grenache and Syrah is a perfect example. The Sichel family, well-known as owners and négociants in Bordeaux, runs Domaine du Trillol. This hearty red would go well with barbecued steak or cheeses such as cheddar or chèvre.

This red wine from the hot 2003 vintage has lovely ripe berry aromas and flavours. It is fairly full-bodied with a long, fruit-driven finish. An excellent choice for barbecued backribs.

MADIRAN 1907   2004
AC
(Cave de Crouseilles)

Madiran is an appellation just south of Bordeaux. Unlike its more famous neighbour, winemakers use the grape Tannat in the majority of their blends (with the Cabernets and Fer in support roles). Traditionally the wines required many years of cellaring, but modern technology has allowed winemakers to extract maximum flavours from the grapes without the harsh tannins. Black in colour with deep blackberries and a touch of tar on the palete, this Madiran is an excellent choice for matching with a spit-roasted leg of lamb.

Château Haut-Monplaisir is in the commune of Lacapelle-Cabanac, west of Cahors. Wines from Cahors are known as 'black wines' as they are among the darkest coloured reds made. In the vanguard of quality for southwestern wines.

Mosel-Saar-Ruwer
ST. URBANS-HOF RIESLING KABINETT   2005
QmP, Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, Estate Btld.

TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett - still manages to show true Kabinett delicacy on the palate, which Weis attributes in part to earlier harvest and frankly in part to this site's compatibility with higher yields. Skin contact and minimal clarification in the cellar help compensate for any danger of dilution. (Lower-yielding parcels nowadays must result in Spätlese or Auslese.) Pineapple, grapefruit, black currant, and Golden Delicious apple dominate the proceedings, suffused with an aura of smoky, crushed stone, and mouthwatering acidity. This is once again a "little" Mosel archetype and a terrific value ... Score - 91. (David Schildknecht, www.erobertparker.com, Feb. 2007).

TASTING NOTE: Butterfly is one of Hanno Zilliken's entry-level estate wines. Yet the 2004 is anything but a simple QbA, showing a complex array of lime, green mango, honey and fresh mint aromas, all underlined by sleek, steely acidity that makes this a textbook example of Saar Riesling. It finishes with subtle fragrance and mineral-drenched length. Score - 91(Wine & Spirits, Dec. 2005).

Run by long-time owners, the Dogliani family, Beni di Batasiolo has nine estate vineyards surrounding the original winery in circular pattern. GIACOMO FENOCCHIO BAROLO BUSSIA   2001
DOCG

Stefano Fenocchio and his descendants have been making wine since the late 19th century in Barolo. There is a strong sense of tradition at this property: Giacomo Fenocchio, father of present day owners Alberto and Claudio, was a strong advocate for not preserving traditional techniques. His sons have maintained the successful winemaking methods of their ancestors while incorporating modern and environmentally sound methods. This single-vineyard Barolo is a perfect example of that dual approach. It may require substantial cellaring (4-10 years), but there is also plenty of fruit in the wine to enjoy it tonight with rare beef or bison steaks.

DOC Rioja

TASTING NOTE: (Translated from Spanish) This will surprise you with its plentiful fruit; very expressive and typical of Tempranillo: lots of red fruit and spices. Not too tannic, with a light bottom of sweet, toasty oak; notes of tobacco and dried rose petals, which feels like to me typically La Riojan. In addition, it seems that the 2004 vintage in Rioja was excellent, with abundant rains in winter and good temperatures in summer, although without reaching the excessive heat levels of the previous year. (www.estintobasico.com, March 17, 2007).
