 Spirits - July 7 Release

Tequila
ZAFARRANCHO TEQUILA REPOSADO
Mexico

Zafarrancho distills their tequila in copper alembic stills. This method takes a great deal of time and effort but the payoff is a much more satisfying, rich spirit. Reposado means 'rested' and this refers to the mandatory ageing the tequila must undergo, from two months to one year in wood. Ageing in oak tames the intense agave flavour and softens the palate. Enjoy this tequila as you would a fine cognac or scotch.

Dessert Wine
MASSANDRA SOUTH COAST KAGOR RED  2002
Yalta

The wines of Massandra are steeped in history. Located near Yalta, the winery was built for Tsar Nicholas II. Because it lacked a proper storage area, local miners were called in to dig the three layers of cool, humid cellars. Since then, the majority of its famous wines have been fortified. At the Yalta Conference of 1945, the Allied leaders, Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt, enjoyed Massandra's wines during their evening meals. Taste a bit of history with this unique, deeply delicious dessert wine.

Madera
MASSANDRA MADERA 2000
Crimea

During the Soviet era, most of the wines made in the Ukraine stayed in the USSR.. The country's climate, in particular that of the Crimea in the south, favours wine production. Soviet influence meant that quantity, not quality, was the hallmark of Ukraine's viticulture, with resulting high yields and substandard wines. Since regaining their independence, Ukranian winmakers are now free to make the decisions in the vineyards, with many opting to reduce yields and craft quality wines. Massandra is a standout in the country's revitalized wine industry. Enjoy this scrumptious dessert wine with cheesecake with cherry or strawberry sauce.

GEORGES AUBERT MOSCATEL SPARKLING WINE
Garibaldi, Brazil

This is Vintages' first wine from Brazil. Georges Aubert was originally located in the south of France. After World War II, with his winery and vineyards destroyed, he decided to relocate to Brazil. The winery made its first wines in 1951 concentrating, as they did at home, on sparkling wines. They introduced the Charmat method to winemaking in Brazil. This Moscatel sparkler is made in a style similar to Asti Spumante. It is pleasantly sweet with intense bubbles and a host-friendly low alcohol. Enjoy it well-chilled with spicy seafood dishes or with dessert based around fresh fruits.

DOMAINE HUET BRUT VOUVRAY  1999
AC

Domaine Huet is well-known as one of the best producers of Chenin Blanc in the world, and the Sparkling version is just as enticing. In fact, in May 2001, Revue du vin de France said Huet's fizz is "one of the best of the appellation," adding "the Huet estate always produces magnificent sparkling wines". The winery suggests serving it as an aperitif or with fresh fruit desserts. It will also reward 4-5 years in a proper cellar. All the wines of Domaine Huet are made using environmentally friendly biodynamic agriculture methods.

DOMAINE DE MARTINOLLES BLANQUETTE DE LIMOUX 2005
AC

It is believed Blanquette sparkling wine has been produced since 1531, originally at Abbey of St-Hilaire, thus staking claim to be the world's first sparkling wine. The wine is made from a blend of Mauzac, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. While Mauzac is disappearing in other regions, often replaced by the ubiquitous Chardonnay, it is still the principal grape grown in Limoux, and must comprise a minimum of 90% of the blend for Blanquette. Aromas of dried apples and acacia typify this bubbly.

SORELLE BRONCA PROSECCO DI VALDOBBIADENE
DOC, Veneto

Sorelle Bronca make dry white and red wines, but their specialty is Prosecco. Year after year, they create something exceptional with their Prosecco, which, in other hands, is generally just a simple sparkling wine. The aromas and flavours here are always full and juicy on the palate. They are also beautifully balanced out by crisp acidity and fine mousse. Try it with pasta in a white sauce or fish dishes.

BENZIGER CHARDONNAY  2005
Los Carneros

Our Quality Assurance laboratory has determined that this wine contains 23 mg/l of free sulphur.

TASTING NOTE: The Benzigers are leaders in the biodynamic movement in California. And this is truly a family winery, with at least five Benzigers playing key roles -- starting with winegrower and general manager Mike Benziger. But this is more than a feel-good story; it's a delicious wine with a very gentle mouthfeel and well-balanced, subtle flavors of golden apple, butter and mineral.  Score - ** 1/2 (out of 4).  (W. Blake Gray, San Francisco Chronicle, May 4, 2007)

GEYSER PEAK CHARDONNAY  2005
Alexander Valley

TASTING NOTE: There is little in the way of drama or depth here, yet this mid-sized offering delivers consistent green-apple fruitiness with a light bit of oak and hints of minerals adding quiet interest. It is clean, slightly viscous and easy to taste, and it will be a useful mealtime companion with dishes ranging chicken to meaty fish. Good Value. Score - 87.  (Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, Feb. 2007)

It’s a forthright wine, rich in peach pie flavors, including the smoky, buttery pie crust, and is entirely dry. Amazingly good when you consider the massive production: 185,000 cases.  Score - 88. VINECOL TORRONTÉS  2006

Torrontés has become for white wine grapes in Argentina what Malbec is for reds, a signature grape. Unlike Malbec,Torrontés is of unknown origins. TASTING NOTE: Since it was first released, this has consistently been regarded as a superstar – at its price point. Surprising really, because it is so subtle that it would be easy to miss. This is a delicately perfumed white that is pristine, fresh and youthful, has little overt fruit flavour, except for a hint of ripe apricot, but a marvelous viscous texture and gentle, fine acidity that enables the flavour to build at the finish.  Score - Bloody Good.  (Peter Forrestal, Quaff 2007)

This wine received a Blue/Gold award at the Sydney International Wine Competition 2007. In this competition, competing wines are served with a dish, in this case it was duck salad with lychees and mango.

TASTING NOTE: Quite a delicate Riesling with a fairly round, juicy mouth feel to it. A semi sweet style. Pretty decent length with a nice, lively, lemony acidity. TASTING NOTE: Dark red. Wild, gamey aromas of bitter cherry, licorice, raw steak, leather and roasted coffee. Chunky and rich on the palate, with the wild meaty qualities repeating and expanding with air. TELIANI VALLEY SAPERAVI RED  2005
Telavi

Saperavi is a grape of Georgian origin that is known for contributing colour and acid to blends. As a stand alone grape, it produces impactful wines that require cellaring time to soften the sometimes firm tannins. Teliani Valley's version had its tannins softened by ageing in second-use oak barrels.Tones of cherry, vanilla, cassis and oak spice make this a natural companion to barbecued meats. It may also be cellared for 1-3 years.
