CRÉMANT DE BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR BRUT  2004

AC

TASTING NOTE: Blanc de Noirs is always rich, and this wine is no exception. It has plenty of red fruits, layers of tannins, fine but full acidity and a great fruity aftertaste. Could age over the next two years. Score - 90. (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, June 1,2006)

PIERRE SPARR CRÉMANT D'ALSACE ROSÉ BRUT
AC Alsace, Méthode Traditionnelle

Relatively rare for sparkling rosé from France, this Crémant d'Alsace is made only with red-skinned Pinot Noir. Most are a blend of red and white wines. The grapes skins are given a short maceration on the juice to impart the pretty colour and also give the wine substance. Secondary bottle fermentation and maturation takes 18 months, adding layer upon layer of flavour and, oh yes, bubbles. They add a slightly off-dry dosage to create a perception of sweetness to the finished fizz. This is an excellent partner for a variety of seafoods including lobster, grilled prawns, grilled salmon and calamari.

39016    (D)            750 mL    $19.95

VARICHON & CLERC ROYAL SEYSSEL BRUT  2004
AC Seyssel

A flavourful food-friendly fizz. Rarely do wines from this tiny Savoie appellation, of which the Seyssel AC is a sub-region, make it to the international market as most are consumed locally. This is made with Roussette and Molette, indigenous grapes that are used quite successfully in Savoie fizz. Enjoy with grilled chicken, oysters, grilled prawns, lobster or salmon.

Beringer's Third Century line marks the beginning of their third century in business (they were established in 1876). For this elegant Pinot Noir, they use fruit sourced from Central Coast vineyards because they feel this region replicates the cool-climate of Burgundy. This wine exhibits aromas and flavours of cherry, plum, earth and oak spice. It is fruity, but ably balanced by fine grain tannins. Cellar it for 3+ years or serve it tonight with a stuffed pork tenderloin.

Toasted Head simply refers to the process of toasting the tops and bottoms (plus the staves) of the oak barrels which imparts the mellow oak character to this wine. Comprised of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, this wine was aged for 18 months in 100% French 'toasted' oak barrels. The aromas suggest cherry, leather and clove that give way to blackcurrant flavours with hints of spice, toast and cedar on the palate. Enjoy this wine with an Angus beef steak.

TASTING NOTE: ... [Pirramimma is a] leader in [making] Petit Verdot in this country. This particular wine has a deep purple crimson colour. It is aromatic with loads of blackcurrants filling the senses. This is followed by cedary oak and cigar box nuances, smoked bacon, violets and an earthiness. Still a young wine, albeit well structured, balanced and drinkable, it should develop beautifully and gracefully with age. Try this with a grilled New York cut steak and diane sauce. The Maurèzes ramped up the fruit and the structure when they brought on board Jean-Luc Thunevin, godfather of the garagiste movement, as consulting winemaker. Garagistes produce fruit-forward, rich wines by employing serious yield reduction, micro-oxygenization and long macerations.

This wine, fit for a king, is ripe and round with a good structure brought to the fore by the 14 months spent ageing in new French barriques.

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Malbec, this wine, from the hot 2003 vintage, is fleshy and silky in the mouth with aromas of cassis, plum and cedar tones. It is still youthful and will reward 2-5+ years in a cellar, or try it tonight with rare beef or lamb dishes.

MONTERNOT MOULIN À VENT LES CAVES  2005
AC, Grande Exception
(Mommessin)

Moulin à Vent is arguably Beaujolais's finest sub-region. The wines are renowned for maturing beautifully for five years or more in a cellar. They are sometimes mistaken for Burgundian Pinot Noirs in blind tastings. This version, grown in a distinct area with granite and sand soil called Les Caves, is aged for 10 months in oak before bottling. The wine is rich and flavourful with a firm streak of tannin suggesting good ageing potential (2-4 years). Enjoy it tonight, if you must, with rare lamb or veal dishes.

DOMAINE PARENT BEAUNE LES ÉPENOTTES  2005
AC, 1er Cru

The ever energetic Anne Parent told me that 2005 wasn't a vintage where "you had to be a great winemaker to make great wine. I did absolutely nothing during the vinification except stand there and watch. The tannins are so refined and the colors extracted so easily that there really was nothing to do except monitor things to make sure that all was as it should be." DOMAINE PARENT LADOIX LA CORVÉE  2005
AC, 1er Cru

TASTING NOTE: A fresh, ripe and exuberantly red pinot nose complements perfectly the rich, generous and relatively supple middle weight flavors that possess an attractive texture on the delicious yet decidedly more serious finish. There is good material here if not great complexity though this aspect may come with a few years in bottle. Best 2011+.  Score - 87-89.

MAISON CHAMPY PERNAND-VERGELESSES CLOS DE BULLY  2005
AC

For years, Maison Champy has been known as a staunch Burgundian traditionalist, creating wines for the very long haul. Beginning with the 2005, they have cut back on the new wood and no longer heat the must after fermentation. As a result, the fruit aromas and flavours are fresher and the tannins are silkier. These wines, such as this single vineyard Clos de Bully, are now designed for enjoyment over the next 10 years rather than 10 to 20 years down the road.

JOSEPH DROUHIN SAVIGNY-LÈS-BEAUNE  2005
AC

Savigny-Lès-Beaune distinguishes itself by the spicy character of its 'goût de terroir'. The village itself sits tucked away in a little valley between Pernand and Beaune, and the vineyards for the appellation are planted on two hills with different exposures. To the north is the Vergelesses slope, producing delicate and perfumed wines, while to the south is the beginning of the Beaune 'Côte'. The wines from the latter tend to have that much more structure. Drouhin's Savigny-lès-Beaune is fermented in both open wooden and stainless steel fermenters. This cherry- and plum-scented wine is elegant and flavourful with ripe tannins giving balance. Cellar it for 3+ years or enjoy it tonight with rare veal chops.

ORCA III  2004
AC Côtes du Ventoux

Orca is Latin for amphora, the Roman vessel for storing wines. Orca III is so named because it is the third vintage of this wine. Aromas of blackberry, leather and raspberry dominate this balanced but fruity wine. Cellar it 1-3 years or enjoy it tonight with grilled duck breast or shoulder of lamb.

CLOS DU CALVAIRE CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE  2003
AC

TASTING NOTE: The 2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Clos du Calvaire is outstanding, simply richer, fuller, and sexier than its younger sibling. Its deep plum/garnet color offers up heady and seductive notes of cherry and currant jam intermixed with smoke, herbs, roasted meats, and loads of fruit. The fruit dominance continues in the mouth although this cuvee has more significant glycerin as well as heady, high alcohol. This is a luscious, hedonistic Châteauneuf-du-Pape to drink over the next 7-10 years.

The resulting wine is full of flavours and aromas, including raspberry, blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate, licorice and a hint of tar. Serve it with grilled steaks, backribs or gourmet sausages.

Consistently one of the most sought after wines, Tignanello is a must for any cellar. 'Tig' is considered one of the best Italian wines racking up numerous awards and accolades with each and every vintage. This rich and spicy blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc is loaded with blackberry, coffee, tar and truffle aromas. More powerful than a locomotive, generally it should be cellared for two to ten years. This faster-maturing half bottle is perfect for that dinner for two with a grilled beef tenderloin.

CACCIA AL PIANO 1868 Ruit Hora  2004

Ruit Hora translates as roughly "time is running away". Presumably, the producer is saying "don't waste time" on bad wines. This masterful 50/50 blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is matured for 10-12 months in new French barriques. To soften the acids, it is allowed to go through full malolactic fermentation. The resulting wine displays aromas of cassis, cherry, vanilla, coffee and dark chocolate. A hint of tannin adds structure and elegance to the wine. Cellar it 3+ years or enjoy it tonight with rare cuts of beef or lamb.

COLOGNOLE CHIANTI RUFINA  2003
DOCG
(Az. Agr. Colognole di Gabrielle)

Mostly Sangiovese with a bit of Colorino, Colognole's Chianti is aged for 12 months in barrel and then spends another six in bottle before release. Though Chianti Classico receives much deserved praise, Chianti Rufina is quietly gaining a solid reputation of its own. Many believe, even though these wines are generally softer than the Classico versions, they have the ability to age longer. This version is an ideal candidate for mid-term ageing 3-5 years.

VIÑA GRAVONIA CRIANZA  1996
DOCa Rioja
(R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia)

There must be some kind of alchemy going on at this winery. Despite ageing all their wines, be it red, white or rosé, for years before release, they retain a remarkable elegance and freshness. Viña Gravonia is made exclusively with Viura (also known as Macabeo). Viura's big advantage is that it can mature in cask for years without risk of serious oxidation. R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia are traditionalists, so they look for some oxidation in their finished wine. This wine, at 11 years of age, displays a nose that suggests flowers, peach, apricot, peach and roasted nuts. Enjoy it with grilled mackeral, sardines or salmon.

MARQUÉS DE MURRIETA YGAY RESERVA   2002
DOCa Rioja

Established in 1852, Marqués de Murrieta is considered one of the founders of modern Rioja. While considered part of the 'old guard', they have never been afraid of change or experimentation. Recent improvements include temperature controlled stainless steel fermenters and shortened ageing processes before release, which have resulted in fresh, more fruit-forward and balanced wines. This wine will reward a further 3-5 years in a cellar or enjoy it tonight with grilled beef or lamb or, if you are really in an experimental mood, try the producer's food match - baked or grilled fish.

RODA RESERVA  2002
DOCa Rioja

Roda is part of the new wave of Riojan producers who consistently push the envelope on the DOC's rules. Winemaker Carlos Diez de la Concepción carefully selects his grapes from 60 ha of vines in dozens of tiny plots. He looks for an absolute consistency and perfect ripeness in the fruit, rejecting any that may not be up to his exacting standards. He then ferments all these tiny lots separately before blending them. The results speak for themselves. In 2006, the prestigious Spanish wine magazine, Sibaritas, declared Roda Winery of the Year.
