Scotch Whisky
10 YEARS OLD ISLE OF JURA SINGLE MALT
Isle of Jura Distillery

Isle of Jura's Single Malt is an excellent way to introduce the novice Scotch drinker to the island style. It contains hints of the smoke, iodine, and brine one comes to expect in neighbouring Islay's distillates, it is made in a lighter, more restrained style. Jura is a Norse word meaning deer; to this day, deer out number humans on the island by 34 to 1.

Medium-full bodied, refreshing with lemon and walnut bitterness on the finish. Very good to excellent length. Serve chilled with cheese, nuts, veggie and seafood appetizers. Score - 89. QUINTA DO ESTANHO VINTAGE PORT   2000
(Jaime Acacio Queiroz Cardoso)

TASTING NOTE: A substantial port for the vintage, this full-bodied offering reveals notes of acacia flowers intermixed with licorice and blackberries, layers of flavor, firm, hard tannin, and surprising length. It is an impressive, albeit rustic example that should be at its finest between 2007-2020.  Score - 90. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2002)

VEUVE CLICQUOT LA GRANDE DAME BRUT  1998
AC

TASTING NOTE: Light gold. Rich, smoky aromas of buttery pear, peach and smoked meat, complemented by exotic spice accents and a hint of white flowers; seems livelier on the nose than the deep, rich 1996 version. Weighty citrus and orchard fruit flavors are framed by juicy acids, and come across as a bit youthfully stunted right now. With air a note of poached pear emerged, along with a suggestion of toffeed hazelnut. Give this a few years.  Score - 92(+?). (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, Nov./Dec. 2006)

E & J GALLO TWO ROCK VINEYARD CHARDONNAY  2004
Single Vineyard Selection, Sonoma Coast

FRANCISCAN CABERNET SAUVIGNON   2004
Napa Valley

Here's a quintessential Napa Valley Cab. The region's characteristic warm days and cool evenings create even ripening which results in a wine with intense cassis, vanilla and plum tones. Supple tannins come in on the mid-palate to bring balance to the wine. A touch of Merlot and a smidge of Petit Verdot are used to fill out this fine, beef-friendly wine.

QUPÉ SYRAH  2005
Central Coast

Robert Parker has called this wine from Qupé "California's answer to Crozes-Hermitage". Generally, this means they aim for a wine that is refined, balanced, food-friendly and ageable, rather than plump, ripe and over-the-top. Try this supple, refined Syrah with grilled lamb chops.

EPSILON SHIRAZ  2005

TASTING NOTE: A terrific value, the 2005 Shiraz Epsilon is fashioned from 32-year-old vines planted in the Greenock sector. Aged 12 months in old French oak hogsheads (300 liters), it exhibits an opaque purple color, abundant aromas of raspberries, blueberries, graphite, and spice box, and a full-bodied, rich, fleshy style. A hedonistic tour de force in winemaking, it can be enjoyed over the next 4-5 years.  Score - 94. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2006)

PRETTY SALLY ESTATE SHIRAZ  2004

TASTING NOTE: Ruby-red. Smoky aromas of fresh blackberry, cassis and candied cherry lifted by sweet licorice and bright minerality. The flavors offer a compelling combination of power and focus; raspberry and blackberry notes build and sweeten through the finish but there's also juicy quality providing focus and vivacity. Finishes supple and sweet, with lingering flavors of dark fruit liqueur. A rather graceful style of shiraz, with impressive concentration.  Score - 91. RICHARD HAMILTON LOT 148 MERLOT  2005
McLaren Vale, South Australia

During a survey of the Strut River in the late 1830s, one of Dr. Richard Hamilton's forebears noticed that Lot 148 was more fertile than the surrounding ones. He promptly secured it for the family and planted a vineyard. In 2005, Lot 148 is still producing spectacular wines. This Merlot is loaded with ripe plum, cherry and vanilla tones. The wine should continue to improve for 5-8 years, but can be enjoyed now with prosciutto, roast pork or lasagna.

TORBRECK WOODCUTTER'S SHIRAZ   2005
Barossa Valley, South Australia

TASTING NOTE: An outrageous value ... A 100% Shiraz from 10-20-year old vines, aged 12 months in old foudres, this fabulous effort may be the finest inexpensive Shiraz David Powell has yet produced. Blackberry, raspberry, cherry, licorice, and peppery aromas soar from the glass of this full-bodied, opulent, voluptuously-textured wine. Boasting superb purity, length, and intensity, this beauty simply over-delivers ... It should drink well for 7-8 years.  Score - 93. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2006)

Puligny-Montrachet is renowned for its Chardonnays at all levels. Entry level 'village wines', such as this fine example from Joseph Drouhin, are brimming with crisp Granny Smith apple, citrus and pear aromas and flavours. Try this medium-bodied wine with pork tenderloin. It is also a good candidate for a cellar for up to three years. You will discover the added complexity one can get from mature white Burgundy.

TASTING NOTE: Moderate wood frames an interesting mix of peach, apricot, green apple, straw and melon notes, of which the latter continues onto the very fresh and intense flavors that delivers good volume on the rather soft yet focused finish. This is a curious wine in the sense that the softness of the finish does not compromise its focus or balance. This will drink well early.  Score - 89. SCHLOSS SCHÖNBORN RIESLING SPÄTLESE   1997
QmP, Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg, Estate Btld.

Celebrating its 10th birthday, this wine shows the wonders of aged Riesling at an incredibly reasonable price. DOMÄNE WACHAU GRÜNER VELTLINER FEDERSPIEL  2006
Wachau

Under Austrian rules, a wine labelled Federspiel must have an alcohol content between 11 and 12.5% by volume and the grapes cannot be chaptalized (that is, sweetened with sugar so the finished wine has a higher alcohol content and fuller mouth-feel). This version is classic Grüner with aromas of pear, citrus and pepper. It is fairly full-bodied with a good balance between the fruit, pepper and citrus. Enjoy with grilled duck breast or even lobster or sushi.

AICHINGER RIESLING VON DEN TERRASSEN  2006
Kamptal

TASTING NOTE: A fruity, flinty, fresh Riesling with a fine balance between the fruit and the acid. Dry, medium-bodied with a lingering, medium long flinty/citrusy/fruity finish. Cellar it 1-3 years or enjoy it tonight with grilled prawns with a bit of spice. (VINTAGES panel, May 2007)

Red Wine
FELSNER ST. LAURENT  2003
Rohrendorfer Thalland, Kremstal

The St. Laurent grape is an Austrian specialty that some think is a fuller flavoured cousin of Pinot Noir. This deep purple beauty displays aromas of plum, blueberries, smoke and earth. Dry, medium bodied and supple, it is designed for roasted turkey breast or cloved ham.

Dessert Wine
LENZ MOSER PRESTIGE TROCKENBEERENAUSLESE  2004
Burgenland

Trockenbeerenauslese, or TBA, is the term that refers to grapes completely affected by 'Noble Rot', the desirable form of the botrytis fungus. The resulting wines are very sweet and have a lovely hard-to-define 'wild' flavour profile. This TBA is a terrific value and an excellent partner for blue-veined cheeses, foie gras or lemon tarts.
