LUSTAU PAPIRUSA MANZANILLA
Solera Reserva

Manzanilla is a light, bone dry Sherry from the coastal town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Lustau's Papirusa is fresh and tangy with just a hint of saltiness, picked up from the ocean air that blows through the Bodegas. This wine was awarded a Silver Medal at the 2006 International Wine Competition. It is a delicate and dry sherry that should be chilled, and sipped as an aperitif with roasted almonds, olives and/or Serrano ham. It also works well with clear soups.

LUSTAU PENÍNSULA PALO CORTADO

TASTING NOTE: One of my favorites among the drier, lighter-styled Sherries is the non-vintage Palo Cortado Península. Medium amber-colored, with great balance, intensity, and acidity as well as a scorched earth/roasted nut character, it is a stunning, flavorful yet light, crisp Sherry. Score - 92. QUINTA SÁ DE BAIXO LBV PORT   2001
Late Bottled Vintage

Quinta Sá de Baixo is a twenty hectare property near the town of Regua in the Douro Valley. As it is just over a thousand feet above sea level the microclimate here is cool, making for elegant, balanced wines. This traditionally made LBV Port is foot trodden, macerated for a month and then aged for a further nine months in new French oak. Very dark in colour, it is opulent and richly structured, with aromas of violet, infused plum, cherry and toasted oak.

MUSKOKA LAKES WINERY RED MAPLE
Cranberry/Maple Premium Dessert Wine, QC Ontario

In the fall of 2001, the Johnston family, owners of the largest cranberry farm in Ontario, decided to begin a new venture, Muskoka Lakes Winery. While grapes don't grow in the region, cranberries sure do, and MLW specializes in wines made with Muskoka's native berry. With Jim Warren, a well-known winemaker in the Niagara region, as a consultant the Johnstons began making wine. This particular fortified dessert wine is made with maple syrup and cranberries - so Canadian, eh?

RHONA MUSCADEL  2003
South Africa
(Graham Beck)

From the South African powerhouse, Graham Beck, comes this sweet fortified wine with a rich, golden, colour, aromas and flavours of orange rind, honeysuckle and a fresh grapiness. The luxuriously long finish delivers notes of marzipan and apricots. Fresh enough to sip as an aperitif, the wine is also rich enough to serve with a fresh fruit salad or selection of cheeses.

J.P. VINHOS MOSCATEL DE SETÚBAL  2001
DOC, Portugal

Compared to its popular cousins, Port and Madeira, fortified Moscatel de Setúbal is relatively unknown in the wine world. Made with the Muscat grape, this wine delivers delicious aromatic intensity for little money. After you have finished nosing this delightful concoction, your palate will be greeted by apricots and honey at first sip. This version won a Gold Medal at the 2004 Muscats du Monde in France. Enjoy with Stilton or vanilla cheesecake.

MASSANDRA SOUTH COAST RED PORT  2003
Black Sea, Crimea, Ukraine

Massandra came to the world stage when its red dessert wines were sold at a Sotheby's auction in 1990. The Massandra winery was built in the 1890's and originally produced wines exclusively for the tsars and other Russian nobility. It was later the drink of choice for the Allied leaders at the end of WWII when they attended the Yalta Conference. Act like you're the king of the world and enjoy this wine with matured cheeses or foie gras.

W. GISSELBRECHT CRÉMANT D'ALSACE BLANC DE NOIRS BRUT  2003
AC

The name Blanc de Noirs, which means "white out of black", refers to the black-skinned grape with white pulp used to make this sparkling wine. In this case, it is made with 100% Pinot Noir. It is a white sparkling wine because the juice is separated before the skins can impart colour to the liquid. This wine would be a great beginning to a social event or will pair well with dark chocolate truffles.

NEIRANO BRACHETTO D'ACQUI
DOCG

This superb Piedmontese sparkling wine is characterized by ruby-red fizz and aromatic sweet red berry fruit. It is a highly 'social' wine with low alcohol and a pleasant sweetness that does not get in the way of great conversation. The nose also has hints of rose petals with excellent aroma replays on the palate. This medium-sweet bubbly is an ideal aperitif, and it would also work well at the end of the meal with dark chocolate-based desserts.

FREIXENET BRUT NATURE VINTAGE CAVA  2004

This vintage-dated Cava offers excellent value. Made in the traditional method, the grapes for this wine come from a vineyard that has a high limestone content. The resulting wine is light and clean with a distinct mineral tone and a long, creamy finish. An excellent aperitif, it would also pair well with a selection of poached or grilled seafood with a garlicky aioli.

HENRY OF PELHAM BOTRYTIS AFFECTED RIESLING  2005
VQA Niagara Peninsula

Botrytis cinera is a fungus that is responsible for many of the world's great dessert wines including Sauternes and Hungarian Tokaji. It shrivels the grapes which concentrates the sugars and acids, as well as adding a distinctly 'wild' quality to the wines. Henry of Pelham reserves a small, low-lying block of Riesling in hopes that once every five years they get the warm days, cool nights and foggy mornings needed to create these unique wines. Enjoy this rich, complex wine with a selection of fine artisan cheeses.

FLAT ROCK CELLARS GRAVITY PINOT NOIR  2004
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: A lilac and earthy nose introduce this beautifully balanced red. Round and smooth flavours of spiced plums and black cherry fruit abound on the mid palate and it has been carefully complemented with deftly handled oak and well integrated acidity. Enough ripe and smooth tannin to help it cellar until 2010, but why wait? Boeuf bourguignon would be proud to be served alongside. Score - ****1/2 (out of 5). Pinot Meunier is one of the three main varietals used in Champagne. It is rare to see it as a single varietal wine. Regardless, its natural fruitiness makes it an ideal choice for rosé. Pleasant aromas of strawberry and light-red fruits are backed up by a fine vein of acidity. This is the perfect wine to pair with some pan-seared Ontario trout.

Happy Canyon Savvy is a vibrant and lively wine that was fermented three different ways: 1/3 in stainless steel for aromatics and zinginess, 1/3 in new French oak barrels to add a touch of toastiness and 1/3 in neutral French oak barrels to add richness on the palate. The resulting wine is complex with flavours of Anjou pear, dried apricots, hints of fresh herbs and vanilla, and has a long creamy finish. CLINE ANCIENT VINE CARIGNANE  2005
Contra Costa County

Carignane (Carignan in France) is one of the most planted grape varieties in the world. When young or not properly pruned, it can create thin, green wines. When green harvested, low-yielding and from old vines, such as this version, it produces blackberry-, cedar- and floral-scented wines. The fruit is well-balanced by a seam of acid and ripe tannins. Enjoy with roast beef with roasted potatoes.

CLOS DU VAL MERLOT  2004
Napa Valley

Clos du Val is a collaboration between American businessman John Goelet and French winemaker Bernard Portet. After searching the world for a location to start a new winery, in 1972 Portet finally decided on Napa Valley. After measuring temperature fluctuations by driving around with his arm out the window, he determined that the cooler climate of Stags' Leap District was best suited to growing Bordeaux varietals. This wine displays the rich opulence associated with high-quality Merlot. Flavours of black fruit and spices are displayed on a silky texture with ripe, fine-grained tannins. This easy-to-enjoy wine embodies the winemaker's philosophy that wine should be "serious but friendly".

FROG'S LEAP CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2004
Napa Valley

Frog's Leap does it again with this ripe, deeply concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of currant, blackberry and spice are picked up immediately. Dried, black fruits, cedar, leather and a touch of olive are featured on the palate. Tannins and oak combine to give the wine a soft mouth-feel and in combination with the acid of the fruit, results in a lengthy finish. Pepper steak or a heartier risotto would pair nicely with this full-flavoured Cabernet Sauvignon.

GREG NORMAN CALIFORNIA ESTATES ZINFANDEL  2003

This wine is rich and highly extracted, but nicely balanced. Greg Norman's Lake County Zinfandel tastes of intense blackberry liqueur, blueberry and ripe raspberry with a subtle jammy component. It is framed by hints of briar and peppery spice, and offers a long, elegant finish. This is the perfect wine to accompany hand-made sausages or other gourmet, casual fare.

INNISFREE CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2005
Napa Valley
(Joseph Phelps)

The grapes for this wine come from the same vineyards as Phelps' more famous cult wine Insignia. Innisfree Cab is a forward and approachable wine with aromas and flavours of mulled spices, red fruit, coffee and cedar, with a long, concentrated finish that lingers on the palate. Ten months in French and American oak give it a slight smokiness that makes this red a good match for grilled red meats.

BÜRGERSPITAL WÜRZBURG SILVANER KABINETT TROCKEN  2006
QmP Würzburger Pfaffenberg, Estate Btld.

TASTING NOTE: The Franken region wines are unique for two reasons. First, their principal grape is Silvaner; and second, they use an unusual bottle known as the bocksbeutel (similar in shape to the Mateus Rosé vessel). In Franken, Silvaner achieves its finest expression. The aromas are full of floral, pear, apple and mineral notes. Medium to full-bodied, its racy acidity gives it tremendous verve. Pair with freshwater fish.

For years Königschaffhausen has been Baden's leading cooperative. Low yields, an ultra modern winery and the desire to produce quality wines has resulted in fantastic reliability, even with difficult grapes like Pinot Noir. The wine has a deep garnet colour, with dried berry fruits and a hint of barnyard on the nose. On the palate silky tannins, good fruit replays and balanced acids come to the fore. DI LENARDO PINOT GRIGIO  2006
DOC Friuli Grave, Dal Vigneto Vigne Dai Vieris

Friuli, in the northwest of Italy near the Slovenian border, is home to many of the country's best white wines. Cool breezes and well-drained slopes ensure that the grapes ripen slowly, retaining their freshness and acidity while developing bright fruit flavours. This Pinot Grigio exemplifies the local style, with fruity notes of melon, peach, and lemon with floral touches, a dash of minerality and racy acidity acting as counterpoint.

PATERNOSTER SYNTHESI AGLIANICO DEL VULTURE  2004

TASTING NOTE: Aglianico is definitely one of Italy's unsung noble grapes. Few others share Aglianico's concentration and vibrancy, a nod to the volcanic soils in which its vines thrive. It produces a firm, medium-body wine with red fruit and mineral character. The intense palate is supported by tannins that are typical of the variety. It is an excellent match for rare red meats or cellar it 4+ years.

PICHIERRI TRADIZIONE DEL NONNO PRIMITIVO DI MANDURIA  2005
DOC
(Vinicola Savese)

'Tradizione del Nonno' means the "tradition of the grandfather". The Pichierri family vineyards are located in the region of Puglia. Here, the red soil is dotted by white limestone, ideal for growing the Primitivo grape, Zinfandel's Italian twin brother. For the Tradizione del Nonno, the grapes are allowed to over-mature slightly on the vine to increase the flavour, alcohol and, ultimately, add a layer of sweetness to the wine. This is a huge, robust and fruity wine with a velvety smooth finish - a perfect complement to pastas, roasts, game and sharp cheeses.

M. CHAPOUTIER INVITARE CONDRIEU  2006
AC

Condrieu, a tiny appellation situated on cliffs along the Rhône River south of Côte Rotie, is the birth place of and planted exclusively to Viognier. Strong winds from the north, the capricious nature of old clones and steep slopes have always made viticulture here an economic challenge. In fact, plantings of Viognier had decreased to a mere 10 hectares in the 1960's. Today, with the spotlight back on Viognier, plantings in Condrieu are at about 100 ha. Due to the limited acreage, however, it will unlikely ever be larger than this. Immensely aromatic with notes of honeysuckle and white peach, the wine, which is rich and mouth-filling, is a great food match for Szechuan cuisine or even broiled trout with a spice rub.

CHÂTEAU LAMARGUE CUVÉE AEGIDIANE  2003

AC Costières de Nîmes

There is some confusion as to whether Costières de Nîmes is part of the Rhône or the Languedoc. While politically and logistically it belongs to the Rhône, the wines have more in common with the Languedoc. This 80% Syrah, 20% Grenache blend is typical of the region's focus on Syrah for their AC wines. The 2003 Cuvée Aegidiane shows the black-fruit-and-pepper character of Syrah, while the Grenache rounds out the texture.
