TOMMASI GRAPPA AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CAMPO CA' FLORIAN
Veneto, Italy

After the Amarone wines have been made, the sugar-rich grape skins still remain. Tommasi gathers and distills them, creating this intense, flavourful grappa. It is fascinating to encounter a grappa made with such a forceful grape. See for yourself if the aromas reflect their source.

POLI AMARO
Italy
(Poli Distillerie)

Each company that produces an Amaro bitter keeps their recipe a well-guarded secret. No one wants their precise combination of herbs, spices, fruits, etc. to fall into a competitor's hands. Poli is no exception. This Amaro is best enjoyed as an after-dinner digestif, especially following the substantial meals we enjoy at this time of year.

Dessert Wine
KEO COMMANDARIA ST JOHN
Cyprus

This is Cyprus' most famous wine. There is evidence that it has been made continually, from the vineyard within the Grand Commandery of the Knights of St. John, since the 12th century. Generally, it is rich, very intense and sweet with aromas and flavours of crème brûlée, raisin, almond and chocolate. Enjoy it with desserts that contain these aromas and flavours.

JOSEPH NADAL ODYSSEUS BANYULS GRAND CRU  1996
AC, Oak Aged

Banyuls Grand Cru, the great fortified wine of Roussillon, must be made with at least 75% Grenache Noir. It also must be aged for at least 30 months in oak before bottling, although many producers age the wine for much longer. This version spent 10 years in cask. The longer-aged products take on a much-desired 'rancio' quality, an aroma and flavour profile that some describe as fruit cake, candied fruits, apricots, sultanas, almonds and walnuts. Serve with your finest dark chocolate or mature and blue-veined cheeses.

43125    (S)            750 mL    $29.95

KOURTAKI MUSCAT SAMOS
Greece

Samos is made using the noble Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. Its sweetness is derived, like Port, from the addition of a neutral grape spirit which arrests fermentation at about the halfway point. The resulting wine is grapey, ripe and aromatically intense. Enjoy it drizzled over/with a fresh fruit cocktail.

LAKEVIEW CELLARS CABERNET FRANC ICEWINE  2005

TASTING NOTE: Many cab franc icewines are quite pale. This is bright and deeply coloured with a plummy hue. Dessert in itself with flavours mindful of strawberry cheesecake, or perhaps strawberry-rhubarb pie (the mind is set off in many directions here). It's medium-full bodied, very sweet with a sour, slightly acetic edge providing the acid support. Sweet and sour on the finish, with excellent length. RED TRUCK  2004
(Cline Cellars)
A well-crafted blend of Syrah, Petite Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Mourvedre.

TASTING NOTE: This is a terrific drinking wine for everyday consumption, but also has the propensity to out-taste much more expensive Rhone-style blends from California. It should drink well for another three to five years. Match it with pasta served with a puttanesca sauce. (Gil Lempert-Schwarz, Las Vegas Review-Journal, Feb. 22, 2006)

TOASTED HEAD SHIRAZ  2004

(RH Phillips)

Toasted Head refers to the barrels in which this wine is aged. Common practice is to char only the barrel walls but in this case the heads are toasted too, imparting richer, toasty characters to the wine. The palate offers bountiful black cherry flavours with nicely integrated notes of cocoa and cedar. Excellent with red meats or spicy pastas.

FAMILIA ZUCCARDI Q. TEMPRANILLO  2003

Argentina, like other New World countries, puts its own stamp on European wine varieties. The Spanish Tempranillo grape is given a starring role in this example. The result is a silky, structured wine that showcases ripe red and black fruit aromas with hints of tobacco, leather and chocolate. Try it with linguine in a cream sauce and wild mushrooms.

There is life after Cape Mentelle for Margaret River pioneer [and Cloudy Bay founder] David Hohnen, who has joined with his brother-in-law Murray McHenry, to create this new label, daughter Freya being the winemaker. (Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine, Feb. 2007) In order to retain the bright forward fruitiness and fresh acidity, the wine does not receive oak treatment. A great choice to match a mess o' mussels.

PETER NICOLAY ESTATE RIESLING  2006

(Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler)

Throughout the centuries, marriages have brought together everything from warring kingdoms to important wine estates. In 1971 Helga Berres married Peter Pauly, bringing together the Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler and Peter Nicolay estates. The two families and the two wineries have thrived since the union. Pinot Noir is still very much an anomaly in Rheingau. The warmer temperatures experienced around the globe have allowed some unexpected wines from some unusual regions to emerge. Rheingau's winemakers have taken advantage of the increased warmth to successfully grow Pinot Noir and to create intriguing dry wine versions of the grape. The unexpected, yet welcome result is presented here.

ROYAL TOKAJI FURMINT  2005
Tokaji
(The Royal Tokaji Wine Company)

After rescuing the brilliant Tokay Aszú sweet wines from their Soviet-era indifference, The Royal Tokaji Wine Company is now proving the region can and should be known for more. This dry wine, from the indigenous Furmint grape, proves their point. The honey, mineral and pear/apple tones lead to a gently dry, nicely refreshing wine. PIEROPAN SOAVE CLASSICO  2006
DOC

Without question, Pieropan takes Soave to a new level. Owner/winemaker Leonildo 'Nino' Pieropan works magic, vintage after vintage, with his blending of Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave. The Garganega gives structure and acidity to the wine, but it is the Trebbiano di Soave that gives it perfume and richness. Trebbiano di Soave bears little relation of the rather bland, unloved, basic Trebbiano grape and, in fact, is also rather rare. Try this wine with a variety of seafood dishes or fall salads.

COLTIBUONO CHIANTI CLASSICO  2005
DOCG

The Coltibuono estate was a monastery for many years before it was broken up by Napoleon in 1810. The property was purchased by Guido Guintini and it is run by his descendants to this day. His multi-great grandchildren, Roberto Stucchi-Prinetti and sister Emanuela, have had a particularly strong hand in revitalizing this ancient property. Today, the wines are well-respected both for their vibrant, modern fruitiness and their commitment to Chianti Classico's traditions. To that end, Coltibuono still adds a little of the Canaiolo grape to the Sangiovese in this wine. Enjoy it with a classic Tuscan meal of fresh vegetables, flavourful bean and eggplant dishes, bruschetta, cured meats and hams.

Until very recently, this super-luxury blend from Johnnie Walker, Blue Label King George V, was available only at UK duty-free shops. This near-perfect blend is made using distillates from houses in operation during the reign of King George V (1910-1936). They also attempted to replicate the style of the whisky from the era by examining bottled samples still available. The blend includes distillates from the great Islay house, Port Ellen. Since it is closed, its remaining stocks are rapidly dwindling, so exquisite blends such as this may be your last chance to experience the Port Ellen style. Other distilleries in the blend include Royal Lochnagar and Cardhu, amongst others. The whisky comes in a crystal decanter with a certificate of authenticity. One of the Scotch world's best values, it is a blend of several single malts, including some from Speyside and the west coast. The Praban Na Linne distillery is located on the Isle of Skye.

TRADITIONAL SINGLE MALTS

ARDBEG 10 YEARS OLD THE ULTIMATE ISLAY SINGLE MALT
Non Chill-Filtered

TASTING NOTE: [Nose:] Oily, slapped-on-all-over-with-a-trowel-peat that leaves nothing uncoated. A lovely salty tang gives an extra tweak. [Taste:] Amazing, grassy, salivating sweetness of the malt on one level; lip-smacking, chewy, gently oiled peat on another ... [General comment:] Close your eyes and enjoy.  Score - 94. THE ARRAN MALT 10 YEARS OLD ISLE OF ARRAN SINGLE MALT
Non Chill-Filtered
(Isle of Arran Distillers)

As with many of the best scotch producers, Arran 'non chill-filters' because they believe the standard practice of using low temperatures, or chill filtering, to remove particles strips the final product of much of its character.

TASTING NOTE: This bottling of some of Arran's first casks entertains and delights. It won't be long before the world's malt connoisseurs add Arran to their list of must haves. Because if it's character and quality you want, it's here by the malt spade load.  Score - 93. (Jim Murray, Whisky Bible, 2007)

HIGHLAND PARK 18 YEARS OLD ORKNEY ISLAND SINGLE MALT

Named "Best Spirit in the World" by noted author F. Paul Pacult (Spirit Journal: The Independent Guide to Distilled Spirits, Wine and Beer, 2005), this 18-year-old malt is rich and spicy with Highland Park's calling cards of peat, heather, honey and smokiness. From the most northerly whisky distillery in the world, this single malt is as hearty, independent and as traditional as the people who make it.

THE MACALLAN FINE OAK 15 YEARS OLD HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT

TASTING NOTE: This is my favorite of the three [Fine Oak scotches] ... you get a richer, much more complex whisky than the 10 year old, and it is more balanced than the 21 year old. This 15 is drier than the 10, with lovely floral and spice notes (cinnamon, coriander, dried orange peel, lavender, rose), balanced by honey-laced complex fruit, and a dry, dark chocolate/orange marmalade finish.  Score - 92. THE MACALLAN 18 YEARS OLD HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT
Distilled 1988

Beginning in 2000, The Macallan's 18 was in short supply. Only now is sufficient quantity available to relaunch it world-wide.

TASTING NOTE: Compelling, crystal clear sherry notes with not a single blemish; massive fruitcake character fortified by a dry oloroso theme ... [Taste:] The whole almost overloads the tastebuds and senses. [Finish:] Just so deft and subtle: the enormity of the mouth arrival settles down now for a series of cross skirmishes between sweetened cocoa, ripe plum and even the softest wave of apologetic peat. Glorious ...  Score - 95. (Jim Murray, Whisky Bible, 2006)

GLENFIDDICH 30 YEARS OLD SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT
(William Grant & Sons)

TASTING NOTE: This is the ultimate in contemplation scotches. The floral, chocolate and honey-essence aromas sloooowly escape from the snifter. In the mouth, the flavours mold and meld together creating a luxurious sensation. The finish is long and lingering. The best part is you can start the ritual all over again.  Score - 86. THE ARRAN MALT AMARONE WINE CASK FINISH ISLE OF ARRAN SINGLE MALT
Limited Edition Bottling

The Isle of Arran distillery has been at the forefront of experimentation with 'finishing' techniques during its decade-long existence, with secondary maturation taking place in the likes of Lepanto PX Spanish Brandy and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 'Villa Gemma' casks. One of the latest Arran releases - limited to 3,220 bottles - has spent some eight years in ex-Bourbon casks before being transferred to 225-litre former Amarone wine 'barrique' casks for a finishing period of nine months. Limited Edition

The cream-sherry casks used for finishing this whisky are from Gonzalez Byass. This whisky is bottled at cask strength of 56.3% alc./vol. The producer's theory is that you create the style of whisky you wish to drink by diluting it with the desired amount of water or ice.

THE BALVENIE NEW OAK 17 YEARS OLD SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT

First Bottling, New Oak

After spending almost 17 years in a combination of second-use Bourbon and Sherry casks, Balvenie gives their New Oak four months of finishing in new American oak barrels. Even after such a brief exposure, a pretty vanilla and tannin tone appears in the dram. As a result, the whisky is lighter and drier in texture than Balvenie's standard bottlings, making it an ideal before-the-meal sipper.

THE BALVENIE 15 YEARS OLD SINGLE BARREL SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT

TASTING NOTE: Cracking vanilla-malt split. Complex, intriguing, something to really get your nose into. Quite maltings-floorish; massive malt surge is invigorating and mouthwatering. Glorious ... Just one of those drams that should be within touching distance at strategic points around the house. Being single barrel the bottlings do change quite regularly: fortunately the magnificence of the quality rarely does.  Score - 93. (Jim Murray, Whisky Bible, 2006)
