Without question, Pieropan takes Soave to a new level. Owner/winemaker Leonildo 'Nino' Pieropan works magic, vintage after vintage, with his blending of Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave. The Garganega gives structure and acidity to the wine, but it is the Trebbiano di Soave that gives it perfume and richness. Trebbiano di Soave bears little relation of the rather bland, unloved, basic Trebbiano grape and, in fact, is also rather rare. Try this wine with a variety of seafood dishes or fall salads.

The Coltibuono estate was a monastery for many years before it was broken up by Napoleon in 1810. The property was purchased by Guido Guintini and it is run by his descendants to this day. His multi-great grandchildren, Roberto Stucchi-Prinetti and sister Emanuela, have had a particularly strong hand in revitalizing this ancient property. Today, the wines are well-respected both for their vibrant, modern fruitiness and their commitment to Chianti Classico's traditions. To that end, Coltibuono still adds a little of the Canaiolo grape to the Sangiovese in this wine. Enjoy it with a classic Tuscan meal of fresh vegetables, flavourful bean and eggplant dishes, bruschetta, cured meats and hams.

This wine commands respect as it is consistently one of the best of the region. (Wine Spectator awarded the 2001 vintage 93 points!) Aromas of raspberry, coffee, truffle, plums, sage, and oak leads to dry, ripe fruit flavours surrounded by velvety tannins. A hearty, full-bodied wine to be enjoyed with bistecca fiorentina. It will improve further with two to three years in the cellar.

This Rosso di Montalcino (Brunello's junior partner) is made exclusively with Sangiovese from the Ginestreto vineyard. Aged for 6-9 months in large French barrels and then racked into Slavonian oak for further maturing, the wines are then bottled. Ageable for 3+ years, they match very well with braised beef or lamb dishes.

Brogal Vini is a multi-layered undertaking that spans both of Umbria's leading traditional wine zones, Torgiano and Montefalco. They possess around 80 ha of vineyard in total, which are managed from the headquarters at Bastia Umbria, where cellaring and sales also take place. The company's top line, sold to wine shops and restaurants, is called Antigniano. (Gambero Rosso Italian Wines 2006) Montefalco Sagrantino is an impactful red wine that is much sought-after for its vibrant fruit and upfront tannins. Age this 3-5 years in a cellar for truly remarkable results.

Amarone is difficult to make but very easy to enjoy. The sweet Port-like aromas of chocolate and plum are very inviting. Dry, medium full-bodied, and quite delectable with currant, cherry, spice and tobacco flavours. Ready to drink now with parmigiano-reggiano cheese or at the end of the meal on its own or with good dark chocolate. Could also be cellared for 3 to 4 years.

The grapes for this Amarone are dried naturally in the winery's loft. The resulting product, a combination of 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, is rich and concentrated. The Cabernet Sauvignon is an unusual addition, but allowed under the DOC if it is no more than 5% of the blend. Best with roast leg of lamb.

They are committed to environmentally-friendly methods of vine growing and winemaking and have earned themselves official certification for their natural and responsible production techniques. The 2003 Grains du Terroir is medium-bodied with cassis and plum flavours, a firm tannic structure, and excellent length. Certainly capable of 2-4 more years of cellaring, it would go well with roast beef.

No one knows Merlot better than Christian Moueix, owner of the world famous, Merlot-based, Château Pétrus. Year after year, he defines Merlot. This wine is soft and round with aromas of raspberry, cedar and blueberry, ripe fruit, great balance and a medium long finish. It's magic with veal medallions and sautéed mushrooms, or baked pasta.

Château Bellevue is situated in the heart of the Right Bank, just west of Libourne, on the limestone- and sandstone-rich hills outside of Saint-Michel de Fronsac. Olivier Decelle purchased the estate in 2000; he has invested heavily in the vineyard and winery, and has introduced biodynamic methods of viticulture. The wine is classically structured, with ripe tannins, and beautiful ripe, red fruit. This is clearly part of the new wave of classically-made, affordable Bordeaux which is coming from the minor appellations.

Produced with the guidance of Michel Rolland, considered by some to be the world's most influential winemaker, this 2001 is just hitting its stride. Still dominated by fresh fruit aromas and flavours such as red berries and cassis, it is beginning to show hints of dried herbs and leather suggesting some developing maturity. It is drinking wonderfully now but has the potential to become even greater with time. This is the perfect wine for a casual fall meal of savoury beef stew with mushrooms and fresh thyme.

TASTING NOTE: This 100% Merlot cuvée has put on weight since I tasted it last year. Jean-Luc Thunevin, producer of the famous and incredibly expensive Valandraud, is a leader of the garagistes. He has proven to the world that, by using modern technology and rigorous standards, tiny sites like his can produce top quality wines. These microchâteaux, on Bordeaux's Right Bank, typically produce ultra-modern wines: lush and opulent, with upfront fruit, soft silky tannins and plenty of oak. Eric Conan of L'Express magazine (Jan. 24, 2005) praises 3 de Valandraud saying: "It is a pleasant surprise to discover that Jean-Luc Thunevin, pioneer of garage wines, can produce, at an astonishing price, a wine that is as charming as it is subtle".

Until very recently, this super-luxury blend from Johnnie Walker, Blue Label King George V, was available only at UK duty-free shops. This near-perfect blend is made using distillates from houses in operation during the reign of King George V (1910-1936). They also attempted to replicate the style of the whisky from the era by examining bottled samples still available. The blend includes distillates from the great Islay house, Port Ellen. Since it is closed, its remaining stocks are rapidly dwindling, so exquisite blends such as this may be your last chance to experience the Port Ellen style. Other distilleries in the blend include Royal Lochnagar and Cardhu, amongst others. The whisky comes in a crystal decanter with a certificate of authenticity. It is housed in a silk-lined presentation box with a display holder for showing-off the bottle on your sideboard or whisky cabinet.
