RÉMY MARTIN EXTRA FINE CHAMPAGNE COGNAC

TASTING NOTE: Rich copper color. Rich, perfumed spice, vanilla, and dried fruit aromas are very attractive. A rich well smooth entry leads to a dry-yet-fruity full-bodied palate with chocolate drizzled pear, anise, vanilla bean, caramel, and spice. Finishes with a long, smooth, perfumed dried fruit and brown spice fade. Remarkably even and balanced in its richness with great drinkability. Score - 93. Grappa
NONINO MONOVITIGNI SINGLE GRAPES GRAPPA
Friuli, Italy, Pinot/Tocai/Malvasia

This spectacular Grappa brings together two of northern Italy's best white grapes - Tocai and Malvasia - plus Pinot and distills them into a vibrant after-dinner libation. Each grape brings either its aromatic nature or weight to the package resulting in this award-winning distillate.

ORNELLAIA GRAPPA
Tuscany, Italy

For the Ornellaia aficionado who has (almost) everything, this Grappa, made from the pomace of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot used to make Ornellaia, is the ultimate gift. Recommend to the lucky recipient that they first open one of their cellared bottles of Ornellaia to enjoy with a great meal; then, as a post-prandial digestif, suggest that they pour an ounce of this fine to see if they can, in its distilled form, discern the Ornellaia-like qualities.

Rum
STROH ORIGINAL 54 SPICED RUM

TASTING NOTE: ... Here's a rambunctious rum from that not-so-tropical-island nation of Austria. This is a liquor for the hard of tasting. Big wafts of candied fruit, spice and wax. And let's not ignore that 54 per cent alcohol figure. The hot buttered rum revival starts right now with this one. Score - **** (out of 5). (Graham Duncan, NOW Magazine, Oct. 12-18, 2006)

GONZALEZ BYASS NOE PEDRO XIMÉNEZ MUY VIEJO
30 years old

TASTING NOTE: How do you describe PX - that black, viscous, unctuous, sweet wine that coats your mouth with seemingly indelible flavours of raisins, stewed prunes and melted chocolate? Well, that just about does it. PX is how you spell "hedonistic" in wine-language. You have to experience it, but don't bother pairing it with anything but your palate. Score - ***** (out of 5). GONZALEZ BYASS MATUSALEM OLOROSO DULCE muy VIEJO
30 years old

TASTING NOTE: ... The nose is simply delightful; it seduces with aromas of toffee, walnut, raisins and more, before revealing the note of axle grease (yes, I mean axle grease) that belies the presence of Pedro Ximénez, the universal Spanish sweetener. This is a fine and beguiling panoply of aromas. There follows an appealing palate, displaying all the richness that the nose suggests, but ... with ... a very dry feel through the midpalate and finish. ... Score - 18 (out of 20). CHÂTEAU DES CHARMES VIDAL ICEWINE  2004
VQA Niagara-on-the-Lake

An ideal cool-climate vintage such as 2004 allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and steadily during the growing season. Once they were netted and given the big freeze, the quality of the fruit was such that it could withstand the harsh weather. The result is Icewine that is lush and sweet, but with a fabulous crisp zip to give it balance.

FLAT ROCK CELLARS SWEET REVENGE VIDAL ICEWINE  2006

TASTING NOTE: Yellow gold in colour. The bouquet displays succulent aromas of peach, apricot, mango purée and citrus with mineral notes. The aromas replay superbly on the palate. Sweet and ripe with an excellent core of acidity and a very long, balanced finish. (VINTAGES panel, Oct. 2007)

TASTING NOTE: The first icewine release under the Mike Weir label is a big, full blown style with very ripe mango-cantaloupe, a vinyl note with a touch of herbs. Very sweet, viscous and thick, with excellent length. Age it a year or two for integration; should hold almost a decade. (David Lawrason, www.winerytohome.com, Jan. 2007)

MISSION HILL RESERVE MERLOT  2004
VQA Okanagan Valley

TASTING NOTE: ... This is a wine of considerable merit, elegantly structured, with aromas of cassis, along with hints of fruit and chocolate. On the palate, it is dense and figgy, with a note of liquorice on the finish. The wine is nicely framed with fine, ripe tannins. For immediate consumption, it deserves decanting. It should easily age and improve for another three to five years. Score - 88. (John Schreiner, www.appelationamerica.com, Sept. 28, 2006)

BERINGER THIRD CENTURY CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005
North Coast

Beringer is the oldest continuously operated winery in the Napa Valley and has been making wine over a span of three centuries. To celebrate, they introduced the 'Third Century' line. Their 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon is designed to be a bridge between, as they say, "past, present and future". The wines are crowd-pleasing and fruit-forward, making them an ideal companion for grilled steak or gourmet hamburgers.

KENDALL-JACKSON VINTNER'S RESERVE
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2003

California

TASTING NOTE: The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintner's Reserve (51% Sonoma, 25% Napa, and 24% Mendocino fruit) reveals a juicy, spicy, earthy, red berry and black currant-scented bouquet, sweet tannin, a good texture, and a strong varietal character. These Vintner's Reserve offerings can undoubtedly be found discounted at even lower prices, but there is no question that their quality keeps rising as Jess Jackson and his wife, Barbara, come closer to utilizing 100% estate fruit. Score - 87. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2005)

MACROSTIE PINOT NOIR 2004
Carneros

TASTING NOTE: If initially showing bursts of toast and slightly gamy spice in the nose, this well-balanced young Pinot quickly fixes comfortably on ripe cherries as its salient trait. It is bright and alive, and it is firmed by light but evident tannins, but its fine fruity energy is insurance enough that it will gracefully age and benefit from a few years in bottle. Score - 88.

REDHAWK VINEYARD GRATEFUL RED PINOT NOIR 2005
Willamette Valley

Since it was founded in the late 1980s, Redhawk Vineyard has built a solid, local reputation on the foundation of this cheekily-named Pinot (we're tempted to call fans of this wine 'Red Heads'). In 2005, the winery was purchased by John & Betty Pataccoli who are enthusiastically carrying on its traditions while making improvements in the winery and the vineyards. An excellent value, enjoy this groovy, medium-bodied Pinot with stuffed mushrooms or roast turkey.

TASTING NOTE: Chile is the Joe Cocker of the wine world - they take other country's styles and mimic them to the point where they either make them their own or improve upon them ... Casa Lapostolle 2006 Sauvignon Blanc is soft on grassy [notes] with hints of lemony freshness on the nose, while the taste is mainly orange blossom, clean, light on acidity and is quite simply an easy [autumn] sipper.

CHÂTEAU DE MONBAZILLAC 2001
AC Monbazillac

Established in the 16th century, Château de Monbazillac is the home of one of the finest sweet wines in France. Accounting for one-third of all Monbazillac produced, the Château carefully nurtures their vineyards of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The property is ideally situated for the growth of the good Botrytis cinera fungus, also known as Noble Rot, that helps give the fruit an intense sweetness. The resulting wines are richly sweet with an almost perfect seam of acidity for balance. Enjoy it with blue-veined cheeses.

Single vineyard Moulin-à-Vent Gamays, such as this, are generally more intensely flavoured than other Beaujolais Gamays. Yields are kept to a minimum which results in maximum flavours in the finished wines. This vintage of Champ de Cour exhibits aromas of spring flowers, red berry, black cherry and spice. The wine is exuberant and richly structured. It is adaptable enough to match both red meats and grilled salmon or swordfish.

TASTING NOTE: ... Deep, dense and concentrated, with excellent structure and length, and yes, just a little heat, as the alcohol level might suggest. I find this to be even more engaging and approachable than the other Montmirails noted in this and the last report, but it's far from its prime, so I'll try it again in five years to see where it's at; my guess is that it'll still be on the way up. PALA CRABILIS VERMENTINO DI SARDEGNA 2006

DOC

Crabilis means "ancient goat shelter" in the Sardinian dialect. It is the name Pala gave to the sloped limestone/sandy vineyard where they grow this wine's Vermentino grapes. Vermentino is a gently aromatic grape that shows its best when it is matured strictly in stainless steel vats. With its apple/citrus crispness, it is a fine match for crab cakes or pan-seared sea scallops.

MANZONE BAROLO LE GRAMOLERE 1999
DOCG

TASTING NOTE: Dark ruby. Le Gramolere is richer, more vibrant wine in its expressive nose and layers of rich dark fruit that sit on a big strapping frame with excellent length, notable overall balance and a warmly resonating alcoholic finish. This comes across as a more modern-styled Barolo than the Santo Stefano and it will still be drinking well at age 20. Score - 91. (Antonio Galloni, www.erobertparker.com, May 2006)

BARBI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2001
DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino, a dark ruby, displays a perfumed nose along with dark fruit and scorched earth nuances on a structured, long frame supported by building tannins. Made in a style that is at once delicate and powerful, today it comes across as backward and austere in its expression. As it sits in the glass it continues to put on considerable weight, but ideally several years of cellaring are called for. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. Score - 90. LA BRACCESCA VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO 2003
DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The 2003 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a plump, engaging effort. A dark ruby, it presents attractive notes of crushed flowers, tobacco, herbs, spices and earthiness. On the palate it is packed with fruit and full of life, showing outstanding persistence as well as notable balance considering the vintage. Though enjoyable today, another year or so in the bottle should help smooth out the tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2015 ... Score - 90. (Antonio Galloni, www.erobertparker.com, June 2007)

PRUNATELLI CHIANTI RUFINA RISERVA 2004
DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The 2004 Chianti Rufina Riserva is a wine of medium deep colour and a pronounced plum-and-cherry nose. The fruit on the palate is ripe and sweet, and there is firm but balanced tannicity on the finish, holding in place but not overriding the substantial fruitiness. The acid-fruit balance is just right and the wine finishes long and satisfyingly. It will stand up to most Tuscan dishes - pasta, grilled meats, hard cheeses - and should improve in bottle over a three to five year period. (Nicholas Belfrage MW, April 19, 2007)

LAMBORGHINI CAMPOLEONE 2003
IGT Umbria, Sangiovese/Merlot

TASTING NOTE: The 2003 vintage of Campoleone, from sangiovese and merlot, is striking in its intriguing, complex but not exaggeratedly ripe aromas, despite the year which was certainly not one of the coolest on record. The clear-cut tones of black berry fruit interweave with a delicate veining of balsam and are joined by hints of pencil lead and gamey sensations. What a great nose! The palate is deep, sweet, meaty and determinedly balanced even though the tannins are still rather firm. Score - (out of 3). (Gambero Rosso Italian Wines, 2006)

LAIRD CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2001

Ken Laird and family spent three decades supplying some of Napa's most famous wine names with premium quality fruit. In 1998 they broke ground on their own state-of-the-art winery. Their first vintage was 1999. This spectacular Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from selected vineyard sites in Yountville, Rutherford and Diamond Mountain. Aged in new French oak for 18 months, this full-bodied Cab offers red currant, plum and cedar notes, with fine grained tannins supplying a solid structure. ROSENBLUM ANNETTE'S RESERVE ZINFANDEL 2004

TASTING NOTE: (14% Petite Sirah; 9% Carignane) At 15.5%, this one delivers one of the lower alcohols within the familial grouping, but it is nonetheless very much oriented to ripeness and to sweet, cocoa and chocolate overlays that come close to smothering its fruit. That a fair dose of the wine's compact blackberryish fruit hangs on across the palate lifts this one into contention, and it will be an easy mate to barbecued meats. Score - 89.
