TASTING NOTE: The 2003 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a plump, engaging effort. A dark ruby, it presents attractive notes of crushed flowers, tobacco, herbs, spices and earthiness. On the palate it is packed with fruit and full of life, showing outstanding persistence as well as notable balance considering the vintage. TASTING NOTE: The 2004 Chianti Rufina Riserva is a wine of medium deep colour and a pronounced plum-and-cherry nose. The fruit on the palate is ripe and sweet, and there is firm but balanced tannicity on the finish, holding in place but not overriding the substantial fruitiness. The acid-fruit balance is just right and the wine finishes long and satisfyingly. TASTING NOTE: The 2003 vintage of Campoleone, from sangiovese and merlot, is striking in its intriguing, complex but not exaggeratedly ripe aromas, despite the year which was certainly not one of the coolest on record. The clear-cut tones of black berry fruit interweave with a delicate veining of balsam and are joined by hints of pencil lead and gamey sensations. What a great nose! In the centuries-old world of Italian winemaking, the Aldegheri house is practically a babe in swaddling clothes. Founded by the Aldegheri family in 1956, over the last 50 years they have established themselves as one of the finest interpreters of the Veneto region's style. Their Ripasso is a classic example of that style, exhibiting aromas of red berry fruit, truffle, cocoa and a hint of raisin. This wine is an ideal match for roasted game bird.
