FONSECA GUIMARAENS VINTAGE PORT 1988
Btld. 1990 Fonseca created this second label in the early 1950s in order to make vintage Ports in undeclared years. Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port is produced from the same three quintas (vineyards) which provide the backbone of Fonseca's declared vintage Ports. While Guimaraens Vintage Ports consistently show the classic Fonseca style, they differ in terms of when they are released. These second label wines are aged in the company's lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia and are only released for sale upon reaching maturity, saving you the trouble of cellaring.

New at VINTAGES MEGALOMANIAC CONTRARIAN SAUVIGNON BLANC 2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula
(John Howard Cellars of Distinction)
John Howard, former owner of Vineland Estates, has opened a new winery, Megalomaniac. The cheeky name refers to the label's Magritte-like image of a man in a bowler hat with his back to the viewer who might be saying, "This is my Sauvignon Blanc, take it or leave it." We take it, most assuredly, because the aromas are classic Savvy, including gooseberry, grass, passion fruit and fresh basil. Dry and crisp and very refreshing, this is an excellent choice for grilled seafood or with an herb-encrusted chicken breast.

MEGALOMANIAC VAINGLORIOUS MERLOT/CABERNET 2004
VQA Niagara Peninsula
(John Howard Cellars of Distinction)
TASTING NOTE: Love the name, love the story behind the name ... this is the first red from John Howard's new project that I tasted and it set me on the road to being intrigued with what else he's putting out. All the wines are made by Andrzej Lipinski, who is best known for his whites, but this blend proves that he's also quite adept with the reds. This one is both flavourful and enjoyable. A nose of blackberry, cranberry, cassis, black cherry and some cedar; the taste follows the nose with a cranberry-mocha finish and cherry dominating the mid-palate. I would say you could hold this one for another 3 years, but why wait, it's tasting good right now.

VQA ON Tour THIRTY BENCH RED 2005
VQA Beamsville Bench Winner of a Cuvée Gold Award at the 2007 Cuvée Awards and a Silver Medal at the Canadian Wine Awards 2007.
TASTING NOTE: Red' is 30 Bench's new Meritage blend with 65% Cab Sauv, 15% Cab Franc and 10% Merlot, aged 12 months in French oak; the grapes drawn from the hot ripe 2005 vintage. Black cherry, cassis and cedar are the most prominent smells right now - with more on the way, if you're willing to put some bottle age on it. The flavours follow from the promise of the nose, with a touch of vanilla, cherry and cinnamon on the finish. Drinking now? Then I would recommend decanting, pre-opening or a really big glass. Holding? 3-5 years easy.

FIELDING ESTATE ROSÉ 2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula
TASTING NOTE: ... This [rosé is] blended from four grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Merlot, of which Pinot is the highest percentage and Syrah the lowest. The nose screams typical rose: raspberries and strawberries, your brain immediately screams back "sweet" ... but hold on Jack there's more inside the bottle than greets the nose, citrus tang, dry mouthwatering grapefruit characteristics and it's dry ... pleasant and dry ...

RODNEY STRONG CHALK HILL CHARDONNAY 2005
Sonoma County, Estate Vineyards
TASTING NOTE: ... This is a well-sculpted Chardonnay, with just as subtle muscle and finesse. As the wine relaxes and aerates in the glass, the rich tropical fruit shows through on the palate, braced by minerality, sweet vanillin oak and tannins from the skins. It's got good weight on the palate without hammering it. The nose is full of green apple and pear, and gives you early notice that this is going to be a big wine. It's a great food wine, big enough to handle chicken, veal and pork, and it would be a great foil to sweet shellfish or a good partner to rich salmon. Aging ability? You bet.

RODNEY STRONG CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2003

TASTING NOTE: A truly hedonistic display, right from the moment it's poured. Enticingly rich aromas of blueberry, chocolate, earth and cloves open the show, with accompanying floral, fresh mint and wood spice, just to keep things interesting. On the palate, firm tannins get into the act, playing foil to a parade of lush, concentrated dark fruit, including plum and black cherry preserve. ARAMIS VINEYARDS SHIRAZ 2004
McLaren Vale, South Australia
TASTING NOTE: Deep violet color. Dense blackberry, creme de cassis, cherry preserves, pipe tobacco, vanilla and baking spices on the nose. This has greater elegance than the more expensive Governor, and the fruit speaks more clearly. Sweet dark berry and cherry flavors are lifted by fresh but gentle acids, and the soft tannins harmonize nicely with the fruit. Finishes with an impressively pure blackberry flavor and a tangy, refreshing note of cracked pepper. Sure, there's oak, but it's there as a sweetening element, allowing the bright fruit to shine. A great bargain in newfangled shiraz.

CHÂTEAU HAUT GRAVET 2003
AC St-Émilion Grand Cru

TASTING NOTE: A potential sleeper of the vintage, this is a strong effort from Haut Gravet. Deep ruby/purple-colored with a full-bodied style, low acidity, cherry cough syrup-like flavors, a plump, fleshy mid-palate, and a sexy finish, it does not yet reveal much complexity, but it is mouthfilling and substantial. Drink it over the next 12-14 years.

CARPINETO CHIANTI CLASSICO 2005
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: Deep black cherry ruby with black reflections and cherry rim. The bouquet is muted, with some iodine and moderate brambly cedar, but not much fruit. On the palate it's medium bodied, and smoother than many, with fairly soft slightly sour red berry fruit (mostly cherry) supported by smooth sweet tannins that flow into a clean fruit laced finish. It needs a little time for the nose to develop, another year, but will be elegant in a fairly soft, gentle key, and will drink well with simple foods.

The Moldovan wine industry suffered setbacks after the collapse of the Soviet Union and is now hitting its stride again. Also known as Kagor, Cahor is made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. BOLLINGER LA GRANDE ANNÉE BRUT CHAMPAGNE 1999
AC
TASTING NOTE: La Grande Année is Bollinger's prestige cuvée, produced only in exceptional years. This may seem criminally young to open a fine wine that is built for extended cellaring (for those who like the aged Champagne style), but I found this wine to be seductive and wonderfully nuanced even at this young age... rich but pale golden colour, pin-prick bubbles and toasty complex aromas... On the palate the mousse is very fine but persistent, and this has an immediate tension between very taut, nervous minerality and a huge sweetness of fruit, with already a nutty, rich maturity from the long ageing, with some toast and caramel, and a very long, supple, elegant finish. A terrific wine. (Natasha Hughes, www.wine-pages.com, Feb. 2007)

MEGALOMANIAC BRAVADO CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005
VQA Niagara Peninsula
(John Howard Cellars of Distinction)
TASTING NOTE: … 2005, being a short crop [in Ontario], didn't allow for both a single [varietal] and a blend [wine], so winemakers had to decide how best to get the most out of [their] grapes … The Maniac behind this bottle, (winemaker Andrzej Lipinski) decided to go single, and good thing he did. The nose is front loaded with black cherries and raspberries, with just a light touch of white pepper; while on the tongue, you'll find lots of black fruit, pepper and oak. A touch of tannin and good acidity helps to make this wine worth drinking now (as it is smoother than one would expect) - yet it can also find some space in the cellar for up to 5 years or so. DOMAINE DU PAVILLON CORTON-CHARLEMAGNE GRAND CRU 2004
AC
(Albert Bichot)
The greatest white wines of Burgundy's Aloxe-Corton appellation come from the sub-appellation Corton-Charlemagne; this is a superb example of that style of wine.
TASTING NOTE: Steely, yet with a richness and expressive flavors of lemon verbena, almond, vanilla and mineral. Fine texture and harmony already at this stage. It ends with a blast of youthful exuberance and lemon vanilla aftertaste. Drink now through 2018. Score - 92. (Bruce Sanderson, www.winespectator.com, Sept. 30, 2006)

LANDMARK OVERLOOK CHARDONNAY 2005
Sonoma County/Santa Barbara County/Monterey County
Landmark Vineyards are devoted Chardonnay specialists and this is their signature wine. The Overlook Chardonnay has made the Wine Spectator's Top 100 list six times in the last decade.
TASTING NOTE: The 2005 exhibits a light green/straw color as well as attractive aromas of honeyed citrus, tropical fruits, and spices. Excellent acidity, a lovely texture and mouthfeel, and medium body suggest this complex Chardonnay will drink well for several years. It represents a hypothetical blend of a classic white Burgundy and a California Chardonnay. Score - 90. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2006) 356501 (D) 750 mL $38.95

AC Alsace
Zind-Humbrecht is one of the recognized kings of Alsace and that distinction rests on the quality of their Gewurztraminer.
TASTING NOTE: Just off-dry and spicy, with grapefruit and lychee flavors added to the mix. Nicely balanced, picking up intensity on the white pepper-tinged finish. Drink now through 2010. Score - 91. (Bruce Sanderson, www.winespectator.com, Sept. 30, 2007) 993352 (MD) 750 mL $43.95

CAYMUS SPECIAL SELECTION CABERNET SAUVGNON 2004
Napa Valley
A wine needing no introduction, Caymus Special Select is true to its name: it is always special.
TASTING NOTE: The brilliant, super-rich 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection (this cuvee is now aged only 15-16 months in barrels compared to older vintages that spent almost twice as long in wood) boasts an inky/purple hue, and sweet notes of lead pencil shavings, creme de cassis, licorice, and charcoal. This dense, full-bodied, opulent, seamless, heady Cabernet is ideal for drinking over the next 15+ years.
Score - 96. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2006)

CHATEAU MONTELENA THE MONTELENA ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2003
Calistoga, Napa Valley
Château Montelena made its reputation at the classic Judgement in Paris French/California taste-off in 1976. It continues to be at the forefront of winemaking in California.
TASTING NOTE: ... The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is still open-knit, although I suspect it will probably close down as well. It exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color along with a sweet, spicy nose of black currants, licorice, herbs, and damp earth. Rich and concentrated, it is the most accessible, and possibly the most elegant and French-oriented of the Cabernets produced between 2002 and 2004. This top-notch effort should be cellared for 2-3 years, and consumed over the following 20-25 years. Score - 93. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2006)

BERINGER CABERNET SAUVIGNON PRIVATE RESERVE 2002
Napa Valley
One of Napa Valley's oldest continuously operating wineries, Beringer deeply impresses both critics and consumers with a hit parade of spectacular wines such as this Private Reserve.
TASTING NOTE: ... It is a fruit-forward, softer, more flamboyant, already seductive effort displaying gorgeous notes of chocolaty creme de cassis, some spicy, high-quality, toasty oak, a rich, plush, savory, expansive mid-palate, and a long, heady finish with elevated glycerin and plenty of sweet tannin and fruit. This wine is delicious yet promises to age gorgeously for 15-20 years ... Score - 94. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2005)

JOSEPH PHELPS CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2004
Napa Valley
Joseph Phelps' first vintage in 1974 represented a radical new approach to Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Today his wines are considered one of California's greatest success stories.
TASTING NOTE: From a more flashy, flamboyant vintage, the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon possesses loads of up-front fruit, soft tannins, and plenty of alcohol. Low acidity and ripe tannin result in a plump style of Cabernet to drink over the next decade. Drink 2006-2016. Score - 90. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Dec. 2006)

ELDERTON COMMAND SHIRAZ 2003
Barossa, South Australia, Single Vineyard
Wine Spectator considers Elderton Command Shiraz "one of Australia's modern classics". Discover it for yourself.
TASTING NOTE: While the deep plum/ruby/garnet-tinged 2003 Shiraz Command is slightly less nuanced than the 2002, it is just as powerful and full-bodied, offering copious quantities of fruit, glycerin, tannin, and muscle. This chewy, rich offering appears to be on a faster evolutionary track than its 2002 counterpart. Give it another 2-3 years of bottle age, and consume it over the following 12-15. Score - 94. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2006)

D'ARENBERG THE DEAD ARM SHIRAZ 2005
McLaren Vale, South Australia
It is not an overstatement to say that without d'Arenberg, McLaren Vale would not have the worldwide reputation it enjoys today, and the latest vintage of The Dead Arm Shiraz is considered one of the best ever. TASTING NOTE: Inky violet. Vibrant, perfumed nose melds blackberry, cassis, kirsch, licorice and dried flowers. On the palate, this shiraz shows an intriguing mix of sweet dark fruit flavors and firmer earth and mineral notes, with big but supple tannins contributing structure. The palate-staining finish features notes of bitter cherry, cured tobacco and high-octane chocolate. Nothing obvious here.
Score - 93. (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, July/Aug. 2007)

CHÂTEAU DE LA TOUR CLOS-VOUGEOT VIEILLES VIGNES 2005
AC, Grand Cru (J. Labet & N. Déchelette)
This is an extraordinary wine from what many are calling the greatest Burgundy vintage ever.
TASTING NOTE: This too is very densely fruited with the same intense floral notes but here the fruit is darker with blue and black berry aromas that continue onto the palate saturating and hugely concentrated flavors that exude power and punch yet there is real depth as well, all wrapped in a very firmly but not aggressively structured finish that leaves no doubt that this will last for 50 years or longer. I quite like this but readers should note that this is a wine expressly made for those who intend to cellar and forget it for a long while. Score - 92-95. CHÂTEAU BEL-AIR-OUŸ 2000
AC St-Émilion Grand Cru
Maverick Bordeaux winemaker Jean-Luc Thunevin brings the same legendary artistry to this wine as he does to the perhaps better-known Château de Valandraud.
TASTING NOTE: Fresh aromas of lemongrass and light plums. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a lovely chocolaty, fruity finish. Best after 2005. Score - 88. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, March 31, 2003)
