Sherry
bodegas ARGÜESO SAN LEÓN MANZANILLA CLÁSICA

Manzanilla is a dry fortified wine that is a food-matching dream. Pair it with salted ham and goat cheese, a vast array of sushi and sashimi, or with seafoods such as grilled prawns, pan-seared sea scallops or even raw oysters. Bon appétit!

703066    (XD)            750 mL    $14.85

LUSTAU Rare AMONTILLADO ESCUADRILLA
Solera Reserva

TASTING NOTE: Clear bronze-amber color, not too dark. Pleasant fresh-cracked pecan scents gain complexity from a whiff of the aroma that Sherry experts call "rancio," an earthy but pleasant character akin to overripe fruit. Mouth-filling but bone-dry, butter-pecan, alcoholic warmth and tart, tangy lemon-squirt acidity come together in balance to make a fine after-dinner sipper. (www.wineloverspage.com, March 2, 2004)

HARBOUR ESTATES RIESLING ICEWINE 1999
VQA Niagara Peninsula

Sweet! The cellaring has been done for you! Already eight years old, this is an outstanding opportunity to enjoy a mature Icewine. Riesling's natural acidity balances the sweetness of the wine and also provides the backbone that allows this wine to age gracefully. It's sweet, soft and luscious, packed with ripe peach and apricot flavours as well as hints of honey and nuts. A Gold-Medal winner at the 2002 All Canadian Wine Championships.

53363    (S)            375 mL    $54.50

MUSCAT OF LIMNOS VIN DE LIQUEUR
 (Limnos Winery)

The low-lying island of Limnos has proven to be one of the finest places in the world to grow Muscat of Alexander, the lesser-known variety of the muscat grape family. The Limnos Winery co-op is responsible for almost all winegrowing on the island and produces a range of wines, including this fortified vin de liqueur, that have achieved considerable acclaim within Greece. Enjoy this intensely grapey/fruity wine with rich desserts or mature cheeses.

DE SOUSA UNOAKED CHARDONNAY 2004
VQA Niagara Peninsula

VINTAGES VQA Choice
KACABA ESCARPMENT SERIES CHARDONNAY SUR LIE 2003
VQA Niagara Peninsula
This wine won a Silver Medal at the 2007 All Canadian Wine Championships.

TASTING NOTE: Medium pale straw with green tinges. Lovely aromas of apricot, white peach, pear, apple, cream corn and a hint of cedar. Quite dry and crisp with a sweet centre to balance off the acid. The extended lees contact makes it seem like it has been oaked, but it has not. Medium full-bodied with a very long, crisp finish. Enjoy this wine with baked white fish or raw oysters. VQA Lake Erie North Shore, Barrel Aged

This wine was named Best Merlot at the 2005 Cuvée Awards.

TASTING NOTE: A juicy and nicely-paced Merlot from a very good year in LENS [Lake Erie North Shore]. The fruit is solid right through, with dark plum and cherry to the fore, with hints of spice and pepper. It's dry and very manageably tannic now, just right for drinking with grilled red meat. Score - **** (out of 5). (Rod Phillips, www.winecurrent.com, Dec. 9, 2006)

GLASS MOUNTAIN CHARDONNAY 2005
Napa Valley
(Markham Wines)

In 1873, Jean Laurent emigrated to the Napa Valley from Bordeaux. He bought property in St. Helena and quarried rock out of the base of Glass Mountain to build his wine cellar. A century later, businessman Bruce Markham purchased the property and created Markham Wines. His Glass Mountain label offers the winery's same attention to quality but with an emphasis on value. Look for delicate, tropical fruit aromas and flavours with creamy, toasty oak notes. Enjoy with steamed mussels or pasta primavera.

JORDAN CHARDONNAY 2005
Russian River Valley

Aged for six months sur lie in French oak barrels, Jordan's Russian River Valley Chardonnay is a subtle and elegant wine with clean, green apple fruit flavours and hints of honey and oak spice. With only a partial malolactic fermentation, this medium full-bodied wine retains its refreshingly crisp acidity and would make a terrific match with chicken breast in a light cream sauce or smoked salmon.

COLUMBIA CREST TWO VINES SHIRAZ 2004

TASTING NOTE: A good effort, with plenty of snap and sizzle ... You get juicy berry fruit, some clean spice and suggestions of white pepper, fine acids and decent length. It says Shiraz but it's less of an Aussie style and more of a snappy, acid-driven Washington take. Score - 87. (Paul Gregutt, Wine Enthusiast, May 1, 2007)

CAMELBACK SHIRAZ 2003
Rockbank Vineyard, Sunbury, Victoria
(Galli Estate Winery)

TASTING NOTE: Bloody gorgeous. Masses of rich ripe bright and bouncing red berry scents with damp earth and white pepper, followed in the mouth by more of that sparklingly pure cherry plum and spice and big servings of dark chocolaty earth. It is also superbly balanced. It starts off impressively fruity-sweet, but as it travels down the palate it becomes progressively tighter and finishes (eventually) on an earthy/savoury note. Really seductive wine. (Andrew Wood, Divine Food & Wine Magazine, Jan. 1, 2007)

D'ARENBERG THE STUMP JUMP GRENACHE/SHIRAZ/MOURVÈDRE 2006
McLaren Vale, South Australia

Here's an excellent quaffer from d'Arenberg. What sets it apart from most Aussie wines at this price is that it is not content to be a simple affair. This wine is consistently rich, savoury and brimming with plum, blackberry, and spice flavours. The 2006 blend is comprised of 48% Grenache, 28% Shiraz and 24% Mourvèdre. Match this rich and smooth Rhône-style blend with duck or game.

D'ARENBERG THE LOVE GRASS SHIRAZ  2004
McLaren Vale, South Australia

In Australia, this wine is available only to restaurants or at the cellar door. Though it is mostly Shiraz, winemaker Chester Osborn gets his blending groove on adding small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Petit Verdot, Tempranillo and Pinot Noir.

TASTING NOTE: High-pitched floral bouquet of fresh rose, blackcurrant and blackberry. A rich, supple shiraz with broad, almost confectionery dark berry flavors and hints of licorice, floral candies and chewing tobacco. For all its sweetness, it's also bright, even racy for shiraz, with good precision and delineation of fruit and herb flavors. Finishes with fine-grained, harmonious tannins. Score - 89. (Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, July/Aug. 2006)

Jazz Wines is the brainwave of an emerging Canadian and Australian partnership. Their website jazzwines.com explores the cultural link between music (jazz obviously) and wine. They are collaborating with award-winning winemakers to make premium quality Shiraz. This debut 2005 release is sourced mainly from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale regions in South Australia, and is crafted by award-winning winemaker Corrina Rayment of Oliver's Taranga Vineyards. Full-bodied with a nice balance of ripe black fruit and savoury spice notes, it is soft, silky, sultry and very food friendly. We recommend it with roasted lamb, and maybe a little Miles Davis in the background.

CHÂTEAU DE Malle SAINTE-HELENE 2004
AC Sauternes
(Vignobles des Contes de Bournazel)

The Sainte-Helene is the second wine of the great Sauternes house, Château de Malle. This wine is made by the same team that produces their first wine and uses the same, as they say, draconian grape selection methods. The only difference is that the grapes are sourced from a new vineyard nearby or young vines from the principle property. The aromas are classic honeysuckle, marmalade and orange peel. The palate is sweet, full-bodied with creamy fruit notes surrounded by cinnamon and honey.

CHÂTEAU MORIN 2005

The impressive Château Morin 2005 was a Silver-Medal winner at the Concours de Bordeaux in 2007. This delicious Bordeaux exhibits lovely fruity aromas, a creamy mouthfeel with cassis and cedar on the palate and a mineral note typical of the St-Estèphe appellation. It is rare to find a Bordeaux from the blockbuster 2005 vintage for under $20 and rarer still to find one from St-Estèphe, home to many classed growths. A spectacular value.

When most of us think of German wines we tend to think of Riesling. However, in the southern Baden region, it's the Pinot grapes – Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris - that hold sway. The Germans have proven to be masters of these wines and the Kaiserstuhl sub-region (across the border from Alsace), where the grapes for this wine were sourced, is considered by many to be the best production area in Baden.

Bricco dei Guazzi are Barbera specialists. They also aim to create a style that is removed from the slightly rustic traditional versions. ROCCA DELLE MACÌE CHIANTI CLASSICO 2005
DOCG

Italo Zingarelli, the late film producer and founder of Rocca delle Macìe, passed his love of winemaking on to his family. They are masters of Chianti. TORRI CHIANTI COLLI SENESI RISERVA 2004
DOCG
(Agricoltori del Geografico)

It is gratifying to witness the unfolding of a programme whose goal is to achieve high quality spread equally over a production of millions of bottles, and to do so without any economic sacrifices. The Agricoltori winery has in the past defined itself as a co-operative, whereas today it reflects the more modern face of a viticulture that focuses on small vineyard owners, encouraging them to utilize better vineyard practices to improve fruit brought to the cellar. Merit for this progress goes to director Carlo Salvadori, who has succeeded brilliantly in motivating his entire staff. (Gambero Rosso Italian Wines 2007)

The Trescone is a blend of Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo and Merlot. It is designed for early enjoyment with such dishes as braised beef, but will also age 3-5 years in a cellar.

CEDRO DO NOVAL 2004
DOC Douro
(Quinta Do Noval)

TASTING NOTE: The 2004 "Cedro" is Noval's second wine, and is a blend of Touriga Nacional (40%), Tinta Roriz (40%) and Touriga Franca (20%) raised exclusively in French oak. It is rather forward, particularly at first, showing lots of primary fruit flavors, tasting grapey and young. It is not a fruit bomb, though, and in fact the fruit moderates a bit with air. Some brightness cuts the fruit and oak. The wine demonstrates some grip and a reasonable finish. The oak becomes a bit more prominent with air, too, but this should integrate well. Its mid-palate is medium weight. I thought there were times when there was some harshness on the finish, but this mostly came together well, and with substantial aeration, pure fruit flavors finely emerged, too. ... Drink 2008-2015. Score - 90. (Mark Squires, www.erobertparker.com, June 2007)

ECHELON MERLOT  2003
Central Coast

Echelon Vineyards is acclaimed for producing serious wines for everyday enjoyment. They were able to achieve this with a series of long-term contracts with trusted growers. Paying a premium for quality fruit has paid off handsomely because Echelon's wines always display a fruit-forward nature with ripe tannins and a good balancing acidity. This Merlot has loads of ripe cherry and mocha flavours and is a great choice for Irish stew or a grilled steak.

This rich, mouthfilling Cab displays bright cherry and black fruit tones balanced by light acids and medium tannins. Get the winter barbecue going and enjoy with a grilled rib-eye steak.

It's somewhat rare to find single-varietal wines made with Petite Sirah but Concannon is one of those producers that is a devotee of the grape. In fact, they claim to be the first winery to ever bottle Petite Sirah, having made this wine for over forty years.

TASTING NOTE: New oak yields to fresh aromas of blueberry, vanilla and maple. Flavors of blueberry syrup, cherry, citrus and brown sugar are even more forward than the nose but not overwhelming in their richness. Creamy close.  Score - 90. The Wine News, June/July 2006)

LOREDONA PINOT NOIR 2005
Monterey County
(Delicato Family Vineyards)

Pinot Noir has turned out to be one of the best-performing grapes in Monterey County, owing to the moderating ocean breezes of the Pacific that travel up the Salinas Valley. The Loredona ("lady flower") shows classic Pinot Noir aromas, including cherry, cedar, plum and earth. A fine choice for grilled duck breast or veal tenderloin.

TEUSNER THE RIEBKE EBENEZER ROAD SHIRAZ 2005
Barossa Valley, South Australia

Kym Teusner is the talented winemaker for Rolf Binder Wines but he also finds time for his own venture which has been receiving rave reviews. This Shiraz is sourced from the famous Ebenezer district of the Barossa Valley.

TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Shiraz Riebke is a brilliant effort from young, 10-year old vines. It exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of creme de cassis, melted tar, graphite, and spice. Aged in old American oak for 12 months, it is a pure, nicely textured, full-bodied Shiraz with sweet tannin and enough acidity to provide freshness and uplift. It should drink well for a decade.  Score - 91. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2006)

TASTING NOTE: Abundant plum and black cherry fruit, with undertones of spice from partial whole-bunch fermentation; shortens slightly, but what more can you ask at the price?  Score - 90. (James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au, Jan. 2007)

Peppery, licorice, black cherry, plum, savoury, vanilla flavours. A bit acidic at the end but has good fruit and suppleness.  Score - 89. (Anthony Gismondi, www.gismondionwine.com, Dec. 14, 2006)

CONO SUR CABERNET SAUVIGNON/CARMENÈRE 2006
Colchagua Valley, Chile

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Carmenère, and 10% Malbec. Our Quality Assurance laboratory has determined that this organic wine contains 25 mg/l of free sulphur.

TASTING NOTE: Currently, [Cono Sur's] cabernet sauvignon/carmenere is the only offering that is certified organic ... The nose of the wine reminds me of those tiny wild blackberries that ripen around [Seattle] this time of year, and also of black cherries and vanilla from aging the wine in French oak barrels. It is a classy wine with a full, plush texture, a deep, rich color and big juicy flavors of black and red fruit, earth and spice. (Richard Kinssies, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Sept. 4, 2007)

LAMMERSHOEK LBV CAPE VinTAGE ZINFANDEL 2002
Liqueur Wine, WO Coastal Region, South Africa

It may be news to you that South Africa has a history of making fortified wines that spans centuries, but what is new to nearly everyone is that they are now successfully growing Zinfandel!

TASTING NOTE: This fortified (16.5%) Port-like red would be the perfect foil to chunks of aged cheddar, parmigan reggiano or any 'death by chocolate' dessert. It offers a glorious nose of cinnamon, fig and dark ripe berry fruit. The texture is creamy and full-bodied with robust flavours of spiced black plum and bramble berry infused with sweet cassis. It has a lengthy warm finish as well as generous acidity to give balance and take away from cloying.  Score - **** 1/2 (out of 5). (Vic Harradine, www.winecurrent.com, Sept. 30, 2006)

DOMAINE DE L'AUMONIER LE TOURAINE BLANC SAUVIGNON 2006
AC Touraine, Loire
(Sophie & Thierry Chardon)

When most of us think of Loire Sauvignon Blanc, we think of the valley's eastern appellations Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé. In fact, the more central Touraine region also produces some fine, fresh and very pleasing Savvies that will satisfy any fan of the grape. Chill this one down and enjoy its gooseberry, grassy, and asparagus scents and flavours with steamed clams with an asparagus side dish.

PICPOUL DE PINET PAR BELLE MARE 2005
AC Coteaux du Languedoc, Midi

DOMAINE DE MIRAIL COLOMBARD 2006
Vin de Pays des Côtes de Gascogne,Gascony, Southwest

Many years ago, during a slump in Armagnac sales, growers in Gascony turned to winemaking to fill the gap. Of course, Armagnac made its comeback, but winemaking, thankfully, lives on here. Local winemakers discovered that the Colombard variety produces a vibrant white wine similar to (but softer than) New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs. Enjoy this gooseberry-, asparagus- and lemon-scented wine with crab cakes or pan-seared scallops.

DOMAINE PERRIER PÈRE ET FILS CHIGNIN 2006
AC Vin de Savoie, Savoie

Most wines made in the mountainous Savoie appellation are consumed locally, especially by the winter sport enthusiasts who come into this area of the Alps to ski and snowboard. Only 10% of all the region's wines ever see the export market, so this wine, made with the local Jacquère grape, is a rare treat. Like an alpine version of Muscadet, this wine is light, vibrant and refreshing, and makes an excellent sipper or partner for cheese fondue.

CHÂTEAU DE BARBE BLANCHE 2004
AC Lussac-St-Émilion, Bordeaux
(André Lurton)

Lussac-St-Émilion is a satellite appellation just northeast of Bordeaux's more famous (and expensive) St-Émilion district. Merlot is the dominant variety here, as it is in St-Émilion, and there are hidden gems to be found for the Bordeaux bargain hunter like this blend of 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from 25+ year old vines, this red displays lovely plum fruit, cassis and fresh herb characteristics supported by medium tannins and leading to a lingering finish.
48066    (XD)            750 mL    $27.75

CHÂTEAU DE BEL-AIR 2004
AC Lalande-de-Pomerol, Bordeaux
(S&D Adams, Prop.)

Here's an eminently affordable Pomerol neighbour. Château de Bel-Air owner, Stephen Adams, wisely hired the legendary Michel Rolland as consultant winemaker for this property. This well-crafted wine has dark berry flavours and a tightly knit structure that suggests excellent ageing potential (3-5+ years). If you wish to enjoy it tonight, decant it for two hours and then match it to a rare roast beef dinner with Yorkshire pudding.
61754    (XD)            750 mL    $20.80

DOMAINE FERRER RIBIÈRE TRADITION 2004
AC Côtes du Roussillon, Midi

Winemakers/co-owners Denis Ferrer and Bruno Ribière craft wines that showcase the prominent grape varieties of the Côtes du Roussillon and the region's unique terroir. This deep coloured wine is an equal blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan that displays the classic fruit and spice aromas of the grapes as well as the vibrant garrigue smells (a combination of sage, rosemary, marjoram and lemon verbena) that permeate the air in the Languedoc-Roussillon. Enjoy with grilled gourmet sausage and roasted potatoes.
61143    (XD)            750 mL    $14.85

CHÂTEAU LA BRIE 2003
AC Bergerac, Cuvée Prestige, Southwest

Bergerac is just east of the Bordeaux region and wines here are made in a similar style as its famous neighbour but they offer great value too. Château la Brie is a classic blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. It is fruit forward with fresh acid and gentle tannins adding structure and balance. Enjoy with grilled lamb or age 2-4 years.
61994    (XD)            750 mL    $13.85

CHÂTEAU LAUROU TRADITION 2005
AC Fronton, Southwest
(Guy Salmona, Vign.)

Not far from the village of Toulouse are the terraced vineyards of the Fronton appellation. This region features a rare grape variety by the name of Négrette which has made itself at home in the quartz-gravel soils here. Négrette is low in acidity and tannins, and is notable for its lovely aromas of violets and berries.

TASTING NOTE: Château Laurou 2005 has an abundance of creamy black (cherry) fruit and a hint of chocolate, with good, fresh acidity. (Helen Savage, www.helensavage.com, 2007)

NOTTURNO SANGIOVESE 2005
IGT Forlì, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
(Drei Donà Tenuta La Palazza)

In the world of wine, Italy Emilia-Romagna region is often, unfairly, overlooked. This food-friendly red was a winner at the 2007 Decanter World Wine Awards, proving that Sangiovese can shine outside of Tuscany. With its vibrant fruit and elegant structure, it is a perfect match for one of this area's famous exports, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

LA PISARA PRIMITIVO 2004
IGT Salento, Puglia, Italy

Primitivo, Zinfandel's Italian alias, has an intriguing nose suggesting plum, hazelnut, fresh fig and blackberry. This version by La Pisara also has a fine tannin core that would suggest potential as a bargain cellar dweller (2-4 years). If you want to enjoy it tonight then pair it with a rare steak and mushrooms.

LUIGI D'ALESSANDRO SYRAH 2004
DOC Cortona, Tuscany. Italy

When you think of Tuscany, Syrah might not leap to mind. Not unless you are familiar with the Luigi d'Alessandro estate. Thanks to this winery's initiative, the Cortona DOC is planted with the most Syrah vines, in
