ROBERT
BURNS SINGLE MALT
Isle of Arran
(Isle of Arran Distillers Ltd.)
Robbie Burns Day is January 25th, so raise
a dram of this exquisite single malt to Scotland's greatest
poet.
TASTING NOTE: The Isle of Arran Distillery is the
only spirit maker authorized by the World Burns Federation
to use his name and signature. Unlike Robbie's prose his
eponymous whisky is a delicate creature with a light apple
and honey flavour that goes down smooth and easy: making
it a perfect introduction for the uninitiated and a better
drinking partner with a rustic highland menu than the
majority of other single malts. (Peter Rockwell, The
Halifax Daily News, Jan. 20, 2005)

CREEKSIDE
VIDAL ICEWINE 2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula
Hand harvested in January 2007 at a numbing
minus 10 degrees Celsius, this delicious
Vidal Icewine shows why it's worth the wait
and all the hard work. The complex nose
displays typical apricot, honey and citrus
aromas. The sweet palate is rich and creamy
with peach, apricot and butterscotch flavours
that are beautifully balanced by a bright
seam of acidity. Enjoy over the next 5-7
years and match with crème caramel
or mature cheeses.

A Silver Medal winner at the 2007 All Canadian

TASTING NOTE: ... Rose water or rose

tempt the palate ... zesty and zingy with
a medium long lychee fruit finish. Is that
G for Gewurztraminer or G for Gee Whiz?
Whatever it is, it should be G for good
or even great. (Michael Pinkus, www.ontariowinereview.com, Oct.

OLD VINES RIESLING 2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula, Estate Btld.
TASTING NOTE: ... Dave Johnson has created
an elegant and finesse-laden Riesling from
some of the oldest vines in Niagara, rivaling
those from both Vineland and Cave Springs
for the title (30 years) ... This racy and
minerally driven wine has apple, orange blossom
and lime in both the nose and taste. The good
acidity keeps the mouth watering and you coming
back for more. The best part is the lingering
finish. While it sits in the glass it opens
up even more on both the taste and the smell,
revealing more tropical and further citrus
notes. Snap it up, drink it up ... or lie
it down, this one should also age beautifully.

TASTING NOTE: A young, perfectly balanced

Geelong is one of Australia's oldest wine
regions. A force to be reckoned with in
the 19th century, the region lost its footing

eventually rebuilt itself and is now home

AC Minervois La Livinière
Château de Gourgazaud has a very
simple philosophy summed up best in a quote
from owner Roger Piquet: "You wouldn't eat
underripe fruit, why would you drink wine
from underripe grapes?" The 70 ha of vineyards,
of which 40 ha are under the AC, and the
rest, Vin de Pays d'Oc, are some of the
most beautiful in the wine world. The plateau
where the majority of the AC grapes grow
seems to stretch off until it meets the
horizon. And true to the philosophy, the
wines, especially the reds, are perfectly
ripe, but never overripe.

CÔTES
DU RHÔNE-VILLAGES VIEILLES VIGNES 2003
AC
(Les Vignerons du Castelas a Rochefort-du-Gard)
The hot 2003 vintage helped create flavourful,
round and ripe wines, especially in the
southern Rhône. This Grenache-dominated
wine is a prime example of that heat. Intense
aromas of plum, blackberry and pepper dominate
this crowd-pleasing wine. Enjoy it on pizza
or pasta night.

CAVE
DE TAIN CROZES HERMITAGE 2003
AC
TASTING NOTE: There's a really bright
raspberry character on the nose here, with
a definite hint of Brettanomyces, but giving
a meaty edge that works quite well. The palate
is dry and savoury, with a meaty, peppery
quality and decisive acid structure with firm
tannins. Very savoury and a reasonably good
expression of northern Rhône Syrah.

PUKLUS
TOKAJI SZAMORODNI DRY 1997
Szentkereszt Dülö, Tokaj-Hegyalja
Szamorodni means "the way it was grown".
Since the botrytis-affected grapes are not
separated from the bunches during the late-autumn
harvest, the resulting wine will be either
dry or sweet depending on the proportion
of Aszú berries. When there are fewer
Aszú grapes, the result is a dry
Szamorodni as in the 1997 vintage. It's
an ideal choice for rich seafood or herbed
chicken.

BOLLINI
PINOT GRIGIO 2005
DOC
(Empson & Co.)
TASTING NOTE: Fresh, crisp mineral tones
greet the nose, followed by floral notes and
lush exotic fruit. The mineral tones are almost
brackish in their intensity, which underlines
this wine's excellent food pairing potential.
Try with stir-fry. Score - 88.

ANTICO GRILLO PARLANTE 2005
IGT Sicilia
A grillo parlante is a talking cricket
in Italian, a character introduced to the
world in Carlo Collodi's beloved Pinocchio
and made famous by Disney's charismatic
Jiminy Cricket. Grillo is also a Sicilian
grape that is used to create crisp, fresh,
and food-friendly whites.
TASTING NOTE: The wines submitted
were classy and good value. Grillo Parlante
'05, from grillo, is fresh and fruity with
underlying aromatic herbs.

ROCCA
DELLE MACÌE VERMENTINO OCCHIO A VENTO 2006
IGT Maremma Toscana
Vermentino, an attractive, aromatic white
grape grown mostly in Sardinia, is extremely
rare in Tuscany. In Sardinia, they tend
to pick it early to maintain the acid levels.
In Tuscany, however, they aim for fuller
aromatic intensity rather than crisp acidity.
In this style, it is an excellent partner
for spicy shrimp dishes, vindaloo chicken
or sushi.

CASTELLO
DI NEIVE BARBARESCO 2004
DOCG
(Az. Agricola Di Italo Stupino)
TASTING NOTE: The 2004 Barbaresco is
textbook Nebbiolo. It is a small-scaled wine,
but everything is in the right place. Made
in a delicate, feminine style, it offers floral,
spiced aromatics and pure, clean fruit, with
excellent balance and well-integrated tannins.
I can't ask for anything more from a wine
at this level. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2014.
