EMILIO LUSTAU FINO DEL PUERTO SOLERA MATURED BY JOSÉ LUIS GONZÁLEZ OBREGÓN
El Puerto de Santa Maria

TASTING NOTE: Among Lustau's almacenistas, feathery light Fino del Puerto, matured by José Luis González Obregón, may be the most sophisticated fino I have ever drunk. (Howard G. Goldberg, The Wine News, March/April/May 2007)

48157    (XD)            375 mL    $12.85

emilio LUSTAU DELUXE CREAM CAPATAZ ANDRÉS SOLERA RESERVA

TASTING NOTE: There is a touch of walnut in this wine, but by-and-large it's fruitier that the others, with prunes, dates, and figs dominating. Sweeter than the East India, it's still focused and complex, and stands head and shoulders over many of the more commercial cream sherries that led to the style's poor reputation.

W & J GRAHAM'S SIX GRAPES RESERVE PORT

TASTING NOTE: W & J Graham makes one of the best-known Reserve Port brands. And a great wine it is, too. It is soft, but there are tannins. It is fruity, but there is good concentration. And with its flavors of ripe black figs and dark chocolate, it is an immediately appealing wine. Score - 89. (Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast, March 1, 2005)

W & J GRAHAM'S QUINTA DOS MALVEDOS VINTAGE PORT 1998

A Silver-Medal winner at the 2007 Decanter World Wine Awards.

TASTING NOTE: Good, youthful colour. Deep, dense, plenty of depth, ripe cherry and cassis on nose. Rich, attractive, firm, pepper and spice. Quite gentle, some structure and depth. Elegant. Drink from 2010. (Judges panel, Decanter World Wine Awards, 2007)

Many consider Banyuls to be France's answer to Port. Made in a sweet, fortified style, it is rich and robust with tons of dried fruit, spice, raisin and vanilla aromas and flavours. It is said to be one of the great matches for dark chocolate.

ROEDERER BRUT PREMIER CHAMPAGNE
AC Champagne, With Gift Box

Superior to many producers' vintage Champagnes, Roederer's non-vintage bubbly has aromas of toast, almonds and fresh fruit that lead to a fresh creamy mouth-feel with flavours of pear and apple. As Decanter's Steven Spurrier puts it, "It cannot be bettered". This classic Champagne makes an excellent aperitif or a delicious companion to a light entrée. Keep this Champagne handy for impromptu celebrations, such as Valentine's Day.

STONECHURCH CHARDONNAY 2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula

This Chardonnay achieves a lovely depth and complexity through extended lees contact (i.e. macerating on the skins, seeds and expired yeast cells for several weeks). The result is a ripe, creamy, velvety, spicy wine that is an excellent choice for stuffed pork tenderloin or grilled prawns with lemon sauce.

STREWN VIDAL ICEWINE 2002
VQA Niagara Peninsula

This multi-award winning Icewine has done well internationally winning Gold medals at both Vinitaly 2005 and Vinexpo 2004.

TASTING NOTE: Great Stuff - and it's not the first time I've been blown away by maturing Strewn icewine with its real depth and power. Deepening yellow gold colour. Very sweet, complex and complete with aromas of honey, peach, freshly baked pastry and butter. Full creamy texture, very sweet, opulent with great acidity and outstanding length. Enjoy now or hold another 3 or 4 years. Score – 93. (David Lawrason, Wine Access, April 2006)

DOMAINE LAFRANCE ICE CIDER 2006
 (Les Vergers Lafrance)

Les Vergers Lafrance orchards are located in St-Joseph-du-Lac. To create this ice cider, the apples are picked at their peak maturity and then kept in a temperature-controlled room until January when they are exposed to sub-zero temperatures (minimum -15° Celsius) to freeze them. They are then pressed to extract a highly concentrated juice which ferments slowly into this unique drink. Terrific match for apple-based desserts or grilled pork chops.

HENRY OF PELHAM RESERVE PINOT NOIR 2006
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: Never judge pinot entirely by its colour. This is indeed a very pale and light bodied but pinot character is bang on with soft cran-raspberry, beetroot and light cinnamon and oak from light barrel treatment. Light bodied, smooth with a youthfully bitter, tannic finish. Very good length. Age it one year. Very Good.

BYRON PINOT NOIR 2005
Santa Maria Valley

TASTING NOTE: This Pinot Noir is medium-depth garnet in color. The nose stars with explosive spice and earth. Decanting, which is advised, allows the wine to open up and even out. Medium intensity aromas of cherry and cola intertwine with clove-dominated brown spice. Light aromas of earth and vanilla are accented by light smoky notes. In the mouth, cherry cola is backed by earthy notes and rose hips. The bright acids liven up the fruit and, along with velvet-like tannins and bigger feeling alcohol, make for a medium body and sleek, juicy mouthfeel. A medium, length finish is all about black cherry and cola ... Score - 88. (www.redwinebuzz.com, May 2007)

EQUUS CARMÉNÈRE 2006
Maipo Valley
(Viña Haras de Pirque)

The impressive Haras de Pirque property features both a world-class winery and a stable for raising thoroughbred horses. It's not suprising to learn then that its modern, gravity-flow winery is in the shape of a horseshoe and that its 'Equus' range of wines takes its name from the Latin word for horse. Right out of the gate, this Carménère is fresh and juicy, with layers of black fruit, mineral, tobacco and sweet herbs, supported by fine tannins.

YALI RESERVE CARMÉNÈRE 2005
Colchagua Valley
(Viña Ventisquero)

The Yali Valley is home to Ventisquero's winery and many of their vineyards. While this wine is mostly Carménère, the winemakers blend in 15% Cabernet Sauvignon for added structure and complexity. The result is a rich and multi-faceted wine with plenty of blueberry and strawberry aromas and flavours enhanced with notes of coffee, chocolate and tobacco. This would be wonderful with a cheese tray including provolone, brie and chèvre.

TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Chardonnay "Summers" was barrel-fermented and aged in French oak with stirring of the lees. It reveals notes of toasty oak, butter, apple, pear, and a hint of tropical fruits. This full-bodied Shiraz exhibits a beautiful texture as well as loads of blackberry and cassis fruit with hints of pepper and chocolate. Dense and chewy, it is best consumed over the next 5-6 years. Barossa, South Australia

TASTING NOTE: The 2004 Shiraz/Grenache Henry's Seven, a combination of 60% Shiraz, 30% Grenache, and equal parts Mourvedre and Viognier, reveals a sweeter, more uplifted nose of flowers, blueberries, black currants, and dusty cherries. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, layered, supple-textured, round, and rich, it should drink well for 5-6 years. Score - 90. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2006)

POSSUMS WILLUNGA SHIRAZ  2006
McLaren Vale, South Australia

Despite the possum depicted on the label, Possums winery actually draws its name, not from the marsupial, but from owners Dr. John Possingham, and Carol Summers. Matured in oak, the Willunga Vineyard Shiraz has complex hints of smoke and spice over juicy, dark fruit and it is satisfyingly soft and rounded in the mouth. A terrific value!

From the cooler Adelaide Hills region, this wine features aromas of blackberry, currants and seasoned vanilla oak, and sweet herbs. It's dry, medium-bodied with berry, spice and gentle oak flavours with fine tannins providing structure. Enjoy with lamb or veal chops.

BOEKENHOUTSKLOOF THE WOLFTRAP SYRAH/MOURVÉDRE/VIOGNIER 2006
WO Western Cape

This blend of 50% Syrah, 48% Mourvèdre, and 2% Viognier is named for a 250-year-old wolf trap set by early pioneers in the Franschhoek foothills who mistakenly thought wolves inhabited South Africa. This rich and flavourful wine is given an aromatic lift by the addition of a small amount of Viognier. Enjoy this beautiful blend with grilled lamb but be warned, once you open it, you might need to lay a few traps of your own to ensure that you get a taste of it!

CHÂTEAU PUY CASTÉRA 2003
AC Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois
(M.M. Marés, Prop.)

Puy-Castéra, meaning 'high camp', i.e. a Gallo-Roman military encampment - the ruins of which still remain - is another example of a wine estate which ceased to function in the 1930s as a result of the [global] slump. Henri Marés, father of Roger, the head of the family today, arrived in 1973. By 1980, the entire 25 hectares had been planted and the wine had been decreed a cru bourgeois. As the vines age the wine is putting on weight and dimension. (Clive Coates MW, The Wines of Bordeaux, 2004)

WEINGUT PFEFFINGEN SCHEUREBE SPÄTLESE 2005
QmP, Ungsteiner Herrenberg, Estate Btld.

Scheurebe (pronounced shoy-RAY-beh) is a cross between Silvaner and Riesling. It was created by Georg Scheu in 1916 in Rheinhessen. Wines made from this grape are still rare in our market, so they are much sought-after whenever they are released. This Scheurebe is full-bodied with pronounced acidity and a bouquet and taste reminiscent of black currants. It's a ripe, rich wine that will make an excellent match for mature cheeses or even spicy fare.

SCHLOSS VOLLRADS RIESLING KABINETT HALBTROCKEN 2006
QmP Rheingau, Estate Btld.

Rowald Hepp taking over as director at Schloss Vollrads beginning in 1999 was a master stroke. Schloss Vollards had a long-standing reputation as an expert Riesling producer, but prior to Hepp's arrival it had fallen on hard times. Hepp almost single-handedly resurrected this fine property by introducing changes in everything from pruning regiment to picking time tables to modernizing of the cellars. The results have since paid off handsomely, as this flavoursome, ripe and fresh Riesling proves. (Deborah Steinborn, members.forbes.com, April 19, 2004)

MICHELE SATTA BOLGHERI ROSSO 2004
DOC

TASTING NOTE: Pale ruby-red. Delicious, ultraripe red cherry fruit nose is nicely complemented by red currant, orange peel, and floral nuances. Bright and fresh in the mouth, with more red cherry along with marzipan and pomegranate flavors. Offers a lush dense texture firmed up by an edge of acidity and a clean, medium long finish. Score - 89. (Ian D'Agata, International Wine Cellar, Sept./Oct. 2006)

ROCCA DELLE MACÌE CHIANTI CLASSICO (V)
DOCG, Tuscany

Italo Zingarelli, the late film producer and founder of Rocca delle Macìe,s passed his love of winemaking on to his family. They are masters of Chianti. This is a delicious wine with complex aromas and flavours of wild raspberry, flowers, oak and hint of black pepper. Uncompromising quality and value that works beautifully with antipasto, simple pasta with fresh tomato sauce or veal scallopini.

DEGANI AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2003

TASTING NOTE: If you are looking for uncompromising wines with no frills, and are more interested in what's in the glass than the architectural distraction afforded by the cellar, then look no further ... The best results come from the standard-label Amarone 2003 which is gutsy, dry and fragrant with herbal infusions and liquorice, and shows nice continuity on the palate ... Score - (out of 3). PALACIOS REMONDO PROPIEDAD 2005
DOCa Rioja

TASTING NOTE: The second tasting involved four wines just arriving in the United States from the Spanish estate Palacios Remondo in eastern Rioja. I haven't tasted four wines from a single producer more impressive all year. There was meat on the bones of the reds, but it was all muscle, not fat. Red or white, the threads that ran through them were spirited aromatics, bright fruit, lean build and vitality ... The reds [included] the forward, authoritative and cherry-rich Palacios Remondo 2005 Propiedad, a blend of 60 percent garnacha and 40 percent tempranillo ...

TASTING NOTE: It is hard to believe that 41,000 cases of this wine were produced because it's so good. Few other wineries could rise to this level at this production. Rich and dry in ripe cherry jam, blackberry pie, cassis, blueberry, smoky oak and spice flavors, it's a complex young wine that approximates the best of Napa Valley.  Score - 90. TASTING NOTE: A typically charming Eden Valley riesling fragrance of lime juice and musky rose petals with undertones of wet slate and suggestions of mineral precede a lean and tight-knit palate of focus and freshness. Its charmingly soft and supple expression of lime, lemon rind and minerally flavour is underpinned by a fine, powdery chalkiness, while it finishes long and tangy. Drink: 2013 - 2017+.  Score - 93. TASTING NOTE: There are 70,000 cases of the 2005 Red, a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot from young vines. However, this is no wimpy wine at 15% alcohol. An unbelievable value, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as an uplifted, projected nose of sweet red and black fruits, earth, and spice box. It is another example of what can be achieved by top quality winemaking in the Barossa's finest viticultural areas.
