TASTING NOTE: A terrific Burgundian style of chardonnay just hitting [its] stride. Complex, well integrated and powerful yet subtle with ripe dried apple fruit, peat smoke, garlic bread, mineral and citrus notes. Full bodied (14% alcohol) fleshy yet firm. Well built with a dry mineral finish. Very good to excellent length. Best now to 2009. (David Lawrason, www.winerytohome.com, Sept. 2006)

HUFF ESTATES FIRST FROST VIDAL 2006
VQA Ontario

TASTING NOTE: ... The nose has some great tropical fruit notes of apples, kiwi, and fresh banana. While in the mouth, it's playful, with ripe nectarine in the front, lemon drop through the middle where it develops some tart qualities and ends with a juicy peach finish. Tasty, tangy and zippy are all words that can describe this wine made from 100% Vidal grapes picked after the first frost hit in 2006 (hence the name) ... A great ender to a wonderful evening, and although it's a 4 on the sugar code you barely feel a thing. Score - (out of 5). (Michael Pinkus, ontariowinereview.com, Nov. 4, 2007)

LE CLOS JORDANNE VILLAGE RESERVE CHARDONNAY 2005
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: Combined from several vineyard sites, this is the least expensive chardonnay but is of very good value. Very bright, deep yellow colour. Ripe with quite tropical pineapple, lemon, butterscotch and gentle wood spice. Medium weight; creamy and intense on the palate with some alcohol warmth (14 per cent); lemony acidity and hazelnut cream on the finish. Some bitterness and lemon peel among brûlée. Very good to excellent length. Quite evolved; drink now to 2010.
Score - 90. (David Lawrason, Toronto Life Wineblog, Nov. 23, 2007)

BLASTED CHURCH SAUVIGNON BLANC  2006
VQA Okanagan Valley

Blasted Church derives its name from a curious incident that's become part of Okanagan lore. In 1929, a crew charged with the task of dismantling and moving a church decided to use four sticks of dynamite to 'loosen the nails'. Save for losing the steeple, the bold plan, suprisingly, succeeded and today the 108-year-old Church resides in Okanagan Falls not far from the winery. This sassy Savvy has typical aromas of gooseberry, grass and kiwi fruit, with notes of lime zest. The refreshing acidity and upfront fruit flavours make it a wonderful match for freshly shucked oysters.

MISSION HILL FAMILY ESTATE RESERVE SAUVIGNON BLANC 2006
VQA Okanagan Valley

Mission Hill Family Estate was recently named 2007 Winery of the Year at the Canadian Wine Awards after its wines earned a whopping 16 medals including a Silver for this tantalizing Sauvignon Blanc.

TASTING NOTE: Ripe, round and dry, this grassy, citrus infused Sauvignon Blanc is lively on the palate, filling the mouth with pink grapefruit and green apple notes. The mid palate is both rich and mouth watering, revealing a hint of praline and finishing with a zesty lime-mandarin burst. (Mark Davidson, www.1049clearfm.com/lifestyle/winebar, Oct. 8, 2007)

LE CLOS JORDANNE VILLAGE RESERVE PINOT NOIR  2005
VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: Blended from several sites with the majority from Talon Ridge atop the escarpment. Very good value - has much of the character, if less depth of more expensive bottlings, with its own finesse mindful of Le Grand Clos. Deeper colour than 2004 and riper, sweeter black cherry-currant nose in cedar, chocolate and touch of mint. Very New World. Light to mid-weight, firm, grippy, dry and sourish. Quite tannic. Very good length. Score - 88. (David Lawrason, Toronto Life Wineblog, Nov. 23, 2007)

BONTERRA MERLOT 2005
Mendocino County, Organically Grown Grapes

Our Quality Assurance laboratory has determined that this wine contains 17 mg/l of free sulphur.

TASTING NOTE: [This Merlot] is rounded out with Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and some Grenache ... In the mouth the wine is dry, with medium acidity and nicely integrated tannins. Cherry and strawberry lead the red fruit in the mouth; plum is conspicuously absent ... The wine starts forward and bold, stimulates, and yet finishes with a long mouthful of ripe and gentle fruit, with echoes of mountain herbs. (Elliot Essman, www.stylegourmet.com)

MACMURRAY RANCH PINOT NOIR 2006
Sonoma Coast

MacMurray Ranch takes its name from Hollywood actor Fred MacMurray (1908-1991) who purchased the property in 1941. For MacMurray, best known as the genial, pipe-smoking father on the television series My Three Sons, it was a place where he and his family could get away from the fast lane and do some fly-fishing. After he died, the property was sold to the Gallo winemaking family and it has since become famous for growing high quality Pinot Noir like this one. In a move that would make any dad proud, the Gallo family hired MacMurray's daughter, Kate, as spokesperson for the ranch.

RANCHO ZABACO Sonoma HERITAGE VINES ZINFANDEL 2004
Sonoma

TASTING NOTE: 11% Petite Sirah. If starting with ripe aromas of blackberries, boysenberries, creamy oak and a hint of a slightly fumey note, the wine shows only ripe, concentrated fruit tied to full oaky richness in the mouth. It is deep and lengthy with hints of spice to its inviting flavors, and its full, supple palate texture is well-supported by balancing acidity and youthful tannins. It can be enjoyed now for its tasty, zesty character or set aside for a few years of softening in the cellar. Score - 90. Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines, Oct. 2006)

  RIDGE THREE VALLEYS 2005
Sonoma County

TASTING NOTE: 74% Zinfandel; 13% Petite Sirah; 8% Carignane; 3% Grenache; 2% Mourvedre. Its mix of supporting grapes gives this measured, mannerly wine a slightly different cast in which its blackberryish fruit combines with aromas of ripe plums and boysenberries. An added note of creamy oak uplifts without challenging for center stage, and the wine is equally focused and well-proportioned in the mouth. It is long on flavor and will serve happily alongside pork roasts and ribs. Score - 89. Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines, May 2007)

  ROSENBLUM APPELLATION SERIES ZINFANDEL 2005
North Coast

Trained as a veterinarian, Kent Rosenblum was an amateur winemaker who followed his dream to found and build Rosenblum Cellars into one of California's benchmark Zinfandel producers. Three decades later, he is still CEO and director of winemaking at Rosenblum. This rich, fruit-driven Zin from his appellation series has layers of blackberry, raspberry and currant fruit as well as hints of spice and vanilla. Enjoy with blackened salmon or baby back ribs.

31773    (D)            750 mL    $22.95

  SEBASTIANI CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005
Sonoma County

Sebastiani has a reputation for creating well-priced, well-crafted wines, such as this Cabernet Sauvignon. Though the label says Cabernet Sauvignon (84.2%), it's more like a Meritage blend using small amounts or Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah. It shows aromas of black cherry, cassis, cocoa, vanilla and toasty oak. There are plenty of dark berry flavours, but the wine is not simply fruit-driven as it is balanced by layers of ripe tannins and acids. A great wine to match with a rare steak and mushrooms.

TANGLEY OAKS MERLOT 2003
Napa Valley, Lot 7

TASTING NOTE: An excellent choice for grilled meat or vegetables, this Merlot is loaded with black cherry, blueberry, cassis and vanilla aromas and flavours. Dry and very fruity, but with a nice structure that suggests it could also be cellared for 1-2 years. (VINTAGES panel, Dec. 2007)

WINE BY JOE REALLY GOOD PINOT NOIR 2006
Oregon

You can't help but respect a guy named Joe who is honest enough to dub his winery - Wine by Joe. He's obviously no ordinary Joe. Joe Dobbes, born in the Willamette Valley, has worked in the wine industry for over twenty years, training in Germany's Nahe region as well as Burgundy. He is a passionate advocate for Oregon wines and is obsessed with Pinot in all its hues: Gris, Blanc, and Noir. This is a stunning example of the latter but we don't want to get too earnest about it. After all, Joe describes his creations as 'serious wine for the unserious'. Know what he means? Sure you do.

HUGH HAMILTON THE RATBAG MERLOT 2005

McLaren Vale, South Australia

Ratbag is Aussie slang for a rogue, a cunning person, a non-conformist - in short, a character. Quite a character himself, winemaker Hugh Hamilton lets his vineyards speak for themselves and tries to interfere as little as possible with the naturally ebullient character of this Merlot. We're sure you'll agree that this Ratbag is actually a charmer, and one that doesn't make promises it isn't willing to keep!

PLANTAGENET OMRAH SHIRAZ 2004
Western Australia

TASTING NOTE: The 2004 Omrah Shiraz is more deeply colored and more perfumed than [their] Hazard Hill. It exhibits aromas of spice box, pepper, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to a structured wine with excellent depth of flavor and a long, pure finish. It can be enjoyed now but will evolve for several years. Score - 90.   ROCKBARE SHIRAZ 2006
McLaren Vale, South Australia

Red-hot winemaker Tim Burvill left a successful stint at Southcorp to found Rockbare. With Rockbare, Burvill sources fruit from some of McLaren Vale's oldest vines to produce incredibly intense wines such as this dense Shiraz. The 2006 vintage had Burvill doing cartwheels around the winery as it yielded a blockbuster wine with ultraripe black fruit flavours with notes of licorice, black olives and new oak. It's a powerhouse, rich and concentrated, with a generous mouth-feel and a long finish. Decant and enjoy with roasted lamb or cellar for 5-10 years.

The Muré family have been growing grapes in Alsace since 1648. Their wines express the classic characteristics of whatever grape variety they use. This Gewurztraminer is sourced from 29-year-old vines and displays aromas of lychee and rose petals. It's dry, full-bodied and full-flavoured. It will delight as an aperitif or pair it with exotic foods like lamb curry.

ZEYSSOLFF KLEVENER DE HEILIGENSTEIN 2005
AC Alsace

Klevener is also known as Savagnin Rosé, a pink version of the Savagnin (a.k.a. Traminer) grape. According to Jancis Robinson MW, "Klevener de Heiligenstein is an Alsace oddity, a vine specialty of the village of Heligenstein introduced in 1740 by its mayor Erhard Wantz, possibly from Chiavenna in the Italian alps. It is a locally adapted Traminer ... which is increasingly popular."' Be on the cutting edge and try this delicious 'oddity' from Alsace.

DOMAINE BRUNET VOUVRAY 2006

(Paul André Benoist)

Taking their name from a small town on the banks of the Loire River, Vouvray wines are generally composed of the great white grape, Chenin Blanc. The area is unique in the length of its harvest, with the latest passages, for off-dry and sweet wines, taking place as late as November. Vouvray is a perfect candidate for current consumption with spicy seafood dishes or, because of its lip-smacking, refreshing acidity, can be aged for up to 10 years.

Jean-Pierre Rivière has been the owner of Château Moulin de Lavaud since 1998. His 6 ha of vineyards, located next to the Pomerol appellation, are composed of gravel and clay that require heavy green-harvesting to reduce yields. Incidentally, Jean-Pierre intends to increase the percentage of Merlot grown in his vineyards as the grape variety has responded so well to the soil conditions. Wines from this château are renowned for their full body and well-integrated fruit. Cellar this wine for 2-5 years, or enjoy it tonight with a rare Angus steak.

  FORT MÉDOC 2000
AC Haut-Médoc

TASTING NOTE: Aromas and flavours of dried cassis, spice, leather, and cedar. Lots of life here still for a 2000 petit-château. This is medium-bodied, with good depth of fleshy fruit, and is developing complexity. It is very long and persistent on the finish. A wine for those who like their Bordeaux traditional. Would go very well with a medium-rare steak. (Igor Ryjenkov MW, VINTAGES, June 2007)

AC Pauillac

This third wine of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. It is made with the same exacting standards that this famous property applies to all its wines. This is a seductive offering with aromas of spring flowers, cherry, cassis and vanilla. A good tannin structure suggests mid-term ageing potential, but it will work now with roast beef and root vegetables.

  CHÂTEAU DE BEAUCASTEL CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2005
AC
(Vignobles Pierre Perrin)

TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a wine that probably needs 7-10 years of bottle age. Possibly the most backward and closed Beaucastel made since the 1995, the wine has very high tannins, seems totally closed aromatically, but in the mouth is a weighty wine exhibiting a dense ruby/purple color and tight aromatics consisting of new saddle leather, porcini, meat juices, licorice, tar, and black fruits. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, very tannic, and structured in a dramatically masculine, ageworthy style ... I can't see it being close to drinkable before 2014 and lasting up to 30 or more years.

Domaine Doudet is one of the last independent, family-owned and -operated wineries in the Côte d'Or. And they've been at it since 1849. This wine will definitely reward cellaring of 6+ years.

In 1966, Roger Luquet established this winery with just 4.5 hectares. Today, working with his son and daughter, he has increased his holdings to 24 hectares. Roger's reputation is built on the quality of his fruit. He endeavours to preserve this quality by fermenting only with wild yeast, adding little sulphur dioxide and allowing the wines to mature for an extended period on their lees. Enjoy this fresh, minerally, lively wine with grilled prawns or salmon.
