QUINTA DO NOVAL TAWNY RESERVE PORT

This Tawny Port is a blend of wines aged for five to six years. The time in barrel gives the wine a smooth, nutty, creamy character. The ageing and blending adds elegance and finesse. Due to the lengthy stay in oak, this Tawny does not require decanting and will keep for several weeks after opening. Try with mature or blue-veined cheeses.

MEGALOMANIAC NARCISSIST RIESLING  2007
VQA Niagara Peninsula

[The name] Narcissist Riesling [is] a wine-industry in-joke of sorts that alludes to the white grape's exceptional ability to reflect nuances peculiar to each soil - as though it were a mirror of the land. To help drive home the conceit, the words 'narcissist riesling' are printed backwards, inviting consumers to hold the bottle up to a mirror and, in turn, view their own reflections. (Beppi Crosariol, The Globe and Mail, July 11, 2007)

TASTING NOTE: Intense peach, citrus and floral aromas greet the nose. It's off-dry, light-bodied, delicate and smooth with ripe juicy peach and lime-fruit flavours, racy acidity and a fresh clean finish. Serve it as a refreshing aperitif or paired with freshwater fish. (VINTAGES panel, Feb. 2008)

The Correas family's history in Mendoza dates back to 1798. Today, winemaker Juan Marco crafts premium quality wines like this intense Cabernet with its concentrated blackberry, plum, smoke and vanilla oak flavours.   COCKFIGHTER'S GHOST PREMIUM RESERVE PINOT NOIR  2005
Tasmania
(Poole's Rock Wines)

Cockfighter's Ghost is a 'coast to coast' line of wines from Poole's Rock, meaning the grapes are sourced from the region or regions best suited for each wine. In the case of Pinot Noir, they have two wines, one sourced from Western Australia and this one from Tasmania. The concept is very sound as these two regions are generally considered the cooler zones of Australia, a climatic condition the finicky Pinot Noir prefers. This version features plum, spice and a gentle hint of oak. It is very well-balanced with bright fruit and a firm structure playing off each other perfectly. This will reward 2-4 years in a cellar, or enjoy it tonight with stuffed veal tenderloin.

The wine has very good depth and concentration, ripe tannin, and a medium-long finish. It will evolve for 2-3 years and drink well through 2015. Score - 89. It will benefit from 3-4 years of cellaring and drink well through 2020. Score - 92. (Jay Miller, www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2007)

TASTING NOTE: This is Coopers Creek's most popular red - and it's easy to see why. The 2006 vintage was grown at two sites, in The Triangle (mostly) and Gimblett's Gravels. Richly coloured, it is fleshy and crammed with plummy, spicy flavours, ripe and smooth. A beautifully rich and flowing wine, it has the power to age, but is already a delicious mouthful. A top buy.   ELIO FILIPPINO ARNEIS  2006
DOC Langhe

Arneis means 'little rascal' or 'difficult person' in Piedmontese, so-called in this case because the grape is difficult to grow. Close to extinction in the 1970s, this grape variety bounced back to prominence in the 1980s due to a growth in demand for white wine in Piedmont. Formerly blended with Nebbiolo to add aroma and soften tannins, Arneis is now prized on its own for its exotic aromas of peach, pear, almonds, vanilla and floral characteristics. Arneis may be a mischief-maker but it's a delicious alternative to the ubiquitous Chardonnay grape.

The Nebbiolo and Barbera are aged separately for a few months in French and Slavonian oak casks and the resulting wine offers aromas of blueberry, blackberry and red currant. On the palate, the Nebbiolo gives the wine volume while the Barbera adds freshness and fruit forwardness. A delicious accompaniment to braised beef or pulled pork dishes.

  MARCHESI DI BAROLO BARBARESCO  2004
DOCG

This full-bodied Barbaresco displays ripe fruit aromas of blackberry and strawberry. Dry with silky tannins and rich flavours, this would make a terrific match with everything from charcoal-grilled chicken to braised pork loin or a plate of hard cheeses like Grano Padano or Pecorino Romano.

  RICOSSA BARBERA D'ASTI SUPERIORE  2004
DOC
(MGM Mondo del Vino)

TASTING NOTE: Deep [purple] ruby with violet rim. The bouquet is overripe, with stewed prunes and berry fruit - currants and slight raspberry - mingled with some greenish notes. On the palate it's full, and soft, with ample prune cherry fruit that gains direction from a combination of bright acidity that becomes more apparent on the second sip, and cedar-laced bitterness, while it is supported by ample smooth tannins. By comparison with some other Barberas it's less aggressive, and as a result will work better with foods that aren't as fatty or rich. Meats in any case, but slightly better done, or lighter colored. I found it growing on me.
Score - (out of 3). (Kyle Phillips, Italian Wine Review, Sept. 27, 2006)

  GIORDANO PRIMITIVO DI MANDURIA  2005
DOC, Selezione

The Giordano family has been producing wine since 1900 and is deeply rooted in its traditions but has also shown an openness to the innovations each generation has brought. This Primitivo has basked in the warm and windy climate of Puglia in Southern Italy and is bursting with jammy fruit flavours as well as hints of figs, vanilla, tobacco and oak. Balanced by some gentle tannins with a long dry finish, this is a terrific wine for grilled hot Italian sausages.

  MONTE ANTICO SANGIOVESE/MERLOT/CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2004
IGT Toscana
(Empson & Co.)

This modern take on Tuscan wine blends 85% Sangiovese with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. It shows lovely cherry and red currant aromas along with floral and vanilla oak notes. It's dry, full-bodied with bright red-fruit flavours accented by olive and spice notes and balanced by fine tannins and crisp acidity. It's your perfect pasta pairing and a fantastic value!

POGGIO SAN POLO ROSSO DI MONTALCINO  2005
DOC

This lovely wine is made from young-vine Sangiovese grapes sourced from the same vineyard as this estate's Brunello. To add dimension, it is given a short term in French oak. The resulting wine, displaying cherry, plum and truffle aromas, is structured and fruit forward and may be served now with tomato-based pasta dishes or will reward cellaring for 2-4 years.

Sourced from the estate's San Jacopo vineyard, this Chianti Classico is purposefully designed to be enjoyed within the first three or four years. Expect a lot of fruit and nice balancing acid tones in this friendly wine. A good match with pasta with meat sauce or pizza.

  SENSI MANTELLO SANGIOVESE/SYRAH  2003

TASTING NOTE: Aromas of blackberry, toasty oak and coffee follow through to a full-bodied palate, with soft tannins and a fruity finish. Slightly raisiny. Best after 2007. Score - 90. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, Oct. 31, 2006)

DAL BELLO CABERNET FEUDO DELLA REGINA  2005
DOC Montello e Colli Asolani

Clearly not indigenous to Veneto, Cabernet Sauvignon was first planted in the region's vineyards during the Napoleonic occupation. It was imported to the region by his armies in order to grow 'French' grapes in the captured territories. The fruit for this wine comes from the Asolani Hills whose soil and climate are ideal for the slow ripening of this legendary grape. The wine is filled with aromas of wild cherry, black?currant and plum. It is dry with a warm and intense mouthfeel. The producer suggests enjoying it with chestnut-stuffed quail with polenta.

LUIGI RIGHETTI VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE RIPASSO  2005
DOC

TASTING NOTE: I wavered between 4 and 4.5 stars and was finally persuaded by the price. This is really very good value-an attractive, dry red that delivers on fruit (pungent cherry, plum, spice and earthiness), texture (tangy) and balance (good). It's weighty enough to handle substantial red meat and game dishes.
Score - 1/2 (out of 5). (Rod Phillips, www.winecurrent.com, Sept. 1 2007)

  QUINTARELLI VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE  1999
DOC

TASTING NOTE: But the champion this year is the splendid Valpolicella Classico 1999, mouthfilling and velvety, it gives gamey, warm aromas rich in red berry fruit and so aristocratic you would almost think it was an Amarone. All in all, it's a peerless, starry wine that won our tasting panel over unreservedly and was awarded Three resounding Glasses. Score - (out of 3). (Gambero Rosso Italian Wines, 2007)

REMO FARINA AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO  2003
DOC

TASTING NOTE: Some correct ripe and rich Amarone character here in the more affordable half bottle size. An aromatic medley of prunes, black cherry, dried fruit and spice. Ripe, rich and slightly spicy with good extract and weight. The dark berry and prune flavours linger. Ready to drink. Score - 89. (Jeff Davis, Wine Access, The Lawrason E-Report, 'May 12, 2007)

REMO FARINA AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO MONTE FANTE  1998
DOC

This exceptional single-vineyard Amarone displays all the strengths of Remo Farina's regular bottling, which is frequently in our stores, but taken to an even more elevated level. The fruit is hand selected from the drying mats to ensure supreme quality of the finished wine. The resulting product is rich, ripe, round and deeply delicious. This 10-year-old is just hitting its stride, especially if served with a robust braised beef dish, but it will also reward 2-4 more years in a cellar.

  COMENDA GRANDE BRANCO  2006
Alentejo
(Maria de Lourdes de Norhonha Lopes)

This is a blend of the indigenous Antão Vaz, Arinto, and Gouveio grapes. Antão Vaz is revered for its ability to thrive in hot, dry climates, and it brings with it mineral, citrus and spice aromas and flavours. Arinto is frequently added to Antão Vaz, partly for its ability to age. Gouveio, which is the official name for the Verdelho variety grown in Alentejo, is notable for its medium dryness and apple tones. Crisp, fruity and refreshing, this up-and-comer has lots to commend it.

  POST SCRIPTUM DE CHRYSEIA  2005
DOC Douro
(Prats & Symington)

TASTING NOTE: ... a blend of Touriga Franca (40%), Touriga Nacional (30%), Tinta Barroca (20%) and Tinto Cao. In 2005, it shows more grip, flavor and finish than the 2004 at a similar stage, although it does evolve fairly quickly with an hour or so of air. The mid-palate remains on the understated and elegant side, but the wine is full of flavor, persistent and focused ... This is a very nice value in the vintage, and it drank rather well the next day, too, which is impressive for a second wine. Drink 2008-2014. Score - 90.   MUGA RESERVA  2004
DOCa Rioja

A consistent favourite from Rioja, the 2004 Reserva is comprised of 70% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha (Grenache) with the remaining 10% divided between the Mazuelo and Graciano varieties. Exceeding its Reserva status, which only requires 12 months, the wine was aged for 24 months in oak barriques before bottling in May of 2007. Look for black cherry, strawberry, tobacco and toasty oak aromas and flavours in this medium-bodied, well-balanced wine. Very food-friendly, it's a must with roasted game, lamb chops or pasta in a hearty mushroom sauce.

DOMAINE DE VALMONT GRAND CRU MORGES  2006
AC
(Jean-Michel Besuchet, Vign.)

Noted for its Chasselas wines, the city of Morges holds one of the larger fall fêtes in Switzerland to commemorate the end of the harvest. Each town celebrates differently, but generally producers, such as Domaine de Valmont, serve their previous vintages and pour freshly pressed grape juice as a 'sample' of the new vintage. Match this most recent vintage with the classic Swiss dish, cheese fondue. Or, since the winery seems to be named after one of its main characters, Valmont, sip it while watching or reading Dangerous Liaisons.
