April 3 Release
Scotch Whisky
523068  'LEDAIG'      $  99.95

15 Years Old, Isle of Mull Single Malt, in Gift Box  750 mL
(Burn Stewart Distillery)

There is only one distillery on the Isle of Mull in the town of Tobermory. Both the village and the distillery were original called 'Ledaig' which means 'safe haven' in Gaelic. But when the village changed its name to Tobermory, so too did the distillery. The Scotches from here are unique in that they achieve their attractive, gentle 'peat' flavour through the water, not from smoking the malt over peat fires. Tobermory, now owned by the mainland Burn Stewart, uses the 'Ledaig' name for a line of older Single Malts, such as this one. The saltiness that used to be apparent in this producer's Scotches is no longer there because their island warehouses were sold off and all of the product now matures in Burn Stewart's mainland property, Deanston. Scotch expert, Michael Jackson, describes the Tobermory 'house style' as "Faint peat, minty, sweet. Restorative."

Scotch Whisky
997437  'GLENBURGIE'      $  59.95

10 Years Old, Speyside Single Malt, in Gift Box  700 mL
(Gordon & MacPhail)

Glenburgie is one of the Scotland's oldest operating commercial distilleries. Established in 1810, it has been in its present location since 1829. Several owners have controlled the property, including Ballantines, who acquired it in the 1930s. Since then Glenburgie has been an important component of Ballantine's 'Old Smuggler' blended whisky. Though in the distant past the company released Single Malts, today these can only be enjoyed through independent bottlings such as this one from Gordon & MacPhail. Scotch expert, Michael Jackson, describes the house style as "Oily, fruity, herbal. [An aperitif malt]."

Muscat Rakia is a famous Bulgarian take on Grappa. Their use of the Muscat grape gives this product a very 'grapey' perfume quality. The varietal is very well-expressed in this spirit. Muskatova Rakia is used in Bulgaria as a digestif after a fine meal.

Dessert Wine
922740  'GRAN BARQUERO' OLOROSO      $  11.95

DO Montilla-Moriles  (D)  375 mL
(Pérez Barquero, S.A.)

Made from 100% Pedro Ximénez grape, the wines of Montilla are unique 'Sherry-style' products because they achieve their high alcohol level naturally (Montilla is very hot so the grapes tend to get extremely ripe). They often do not require any fortification. The use of the term 'Oloroso' on their labels is allowed only in Spain and any non-EU country, as the term in the EU is reserved solely for Sherry. Montilla's Oloroso is a heavier sweeter style, but this version is quite dry.

Tasting note: Medium mahogany colour with aromas of caramel and grilled pinenuts. Dry and quite intense in the mouth. Full-bodied with a long, mellow finish. (Vintages panel, July 2003)

996298  LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE PORT  1997   $  22.95

Btld. 2003  (S)  750 mL
(Barão de Vilar)

This LBV is done in the more traditional style, meaning it is bottled, like a Vintage Port, without filtration or fining. Thus, it may actually mature further in bottle and will probably throw some sediment. We recommend decanting.

Tasting note: Dark ruby colour, almost opaque. Aromas suggest fig, prune, spice cake, chocolate and a touch of mint. Sweet, quite rich, but not cloying. Full-bodied with a long finish. (Vintages panel, Aug. 2003)

Food match: nut bowl, dark chocolate.

994376  VINTAGE PORT   2000   $  52.95

994525  VINTAGE PORT   2000   $  26.95

Btld 2002  (S)  375 mL
(Quinta do Castelinho)

Tasting note: This dense purple-colored, rich, sweet 2000 displays pure blackberry liqueur notes intermixed with notions of camphor, smoke, licorice, and flowers. The impressive aromas are followed by an equally admirable attack as well as mid-palate, but there is a lack of follow through in the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018. Score - 90. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 30, 2002)

Angels Gate Winery was officially opened in June 2002. One of its vineyards, planted in 1995, is on land formerly owned by the Congregation of Missionary Sisters of Christian Charity in Ontario. Their second vineyard is down the road and is planted to Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Shiraz. Winemaker Natalie Spytkowsky is very much a 'hands off' creator, believing that the vineyard will give you everything you need if you tend it properly.

'Limited Selection', Santa Ynez Valley  (XD)  750 mL

Tasting note: Pale straw colour with aromas of grass, gooseberry, toast and pineapple/passion fruit. Dry, toasty/citrus, rounding with good crisp undertones. Comes across like a Graves (Bordeaux) style but without the mineral element. Medium-bodied with a medium long finish. (Vintages panel, Jan. 2004)

Tasting note: Medium yellow-green; an aromatic, lively and quite intense bouquet has ripe stone fruit aromas, the palate elegant, fruit-driven, with a long, crisp finish. Has literally soaked up the new French oak in which it was barrel-fermented and matured; nor is the malolactic influence overt. Best 2003-2007. Enjoy with chicken pasta. Score - 90. 965335  SAUVIGNON BLANC   2003   $  22.95

Adelaide Hills, South Australila  (XD)  750 mL
(Shaw & Smith)

Shaw & Smith got their start in 1989 as a contract grape grower. Over the years, they developed their 40 ha site at Balhannah in the Adelaide Hills into their own winery. In 2000, they constructed their own building, ending a period of tenancy at the Petaluma facility. Winemaker Martin Shaw is a well-known perfectionist, so now that he completely controls his fate (as much as a winemaker can), he should be able to push the wine styles in the direction he wishes.

954701  LATE HARVEST MUSCAT   2003   $  14.95

'Lily Farm', Barossa Valley, South Australia  (MD)  750 mL
(Grant Burge Wines)

Tasting note: Medium straw colour with a youthful green tinge. Aromas suggest table grape, wintergreen, wildflower, marzipan and floral tones. Though it is off-dry, the 'Late Harvest' designation may mislead consumers to think this is a sweeter wine than it is. The good balancing acids bring the wine closer to dry than one first expects. Medium-bodied with a long, ripe/crisp finish. (Vintages panel, Jan. 2004)

Erbacher Marcobrunn, Gutsabfüllung  (D)  750 mL
(Weingut Schloss Schönborn)

This is one of our cover bottles this month. Founded in 1349, Schloss Schönborn is one of the oldest wineries in Rheingau. Their cellar was established in 1502 and their oldest vineyard (Hattenheimer Pfaffenberg) property dates back to the 17th century (though obviously none of the vines date from that period). The oldest and still very drinkable wines in the cellar are from the 1735 vintage (a wine from the Erbacher Macrobrunn vineyard).

Tasting note: On the austere side, exhibiting more mineral than peach and apple notes at this stage, yet well-integrated with the succulent texture and lively structure. Drink now through 2008. Score - 90. (Bruce Sanderson, www.winespectator.com, March 31, 2003)

928416  'CRIOS DE SUSANA BALBO'   2003   $  10.95

Torrontes, Cafayate  (D)  750 mL
(Vintage S.A.)

Susana Balbo is one of the few women winemakers who have broken through the glass ceiling of Argentina's masculine preserve. With 20 years of experience in local wineries as well as around the world, she decided 1999 was the year to strike out on her own. 'Crios' means off-spring in Spanish. Balbo states that 'crios' refers to both her children and her wines. Her back label has a most excellent quote: "And like my own Crios, this Torrontes is extemely lovable and fun to be around." Torrontes, is often mistaken for Muscat because of its 'grapey' flavours and aromas. It makes an ideal springtime sipper.

The grapes for this multi-award winning wine are hand-picked in the early morning to ensure good balance in the fruit. Sixty-six percent of the grapes are fermented and aged in French barriques for up to ten months. The remainder are fermented and aged in stainless steel. The wines then go through full acid-softening malolactic fermentation and are then blended together. The resulting wine are bright and fruity, from the stainless steel lot, and given flavour depth by the portion aged in oak.

'Domaine de Molines', Vin de Pays du Gard  (D)  750 mL
(M. Gassier, Prop.-Récolt.)

In the late 1990s, Viognier emerged from the relative isolation of the northern Rhône into the public consciousness. The appeal was so great that winegrowers around the world began to plant it. Today, Viognier enjoys well-deserved popularity. In warmer climates, such as the south of France, it produces deep-coloured white wines whose aromas are reminiscent of peaches, orange blossoms and apricots. The finished wines tend to be relatively high in alcohol too, but its flavourful nature blends well with the alcohol so the best ones are never out of balance. Viognier is also an extremely food-friendly wine, complementing seafood, freshwater fish, poultry, spicy Asian cuisine and vegetarian meals.

France's wine designation VDQS (Vin Delimité de Qualité Supérieure) sits firmly between Vin de Pays and Appellation Contrôlée (AC). In 2004, less than 1% of wine production fell under this designation. This is meant to be a 'proving ground' on the way to full AC status. Inexplicably, Haut-Poitou has been under this designation for years and doesn't look to be moving up anytime soon. Their wines are well-respected, especially their Gamay and Sauvignon Blanc (also available in this release, 119222, page 12).

580233  'OSAR'   1999   $  64.95

IGT Rosso del Veronese  (D)  750 mL
(Masi)

'Osar' is made with the ancient and almost extinct variety Oseleta. Back in 1986, Masi discovered four vines growing in their vineyards and carefully set out to 'resurrect' this long forgotten grape. Low yields is thought to be one of the reasons it had fallen into decline. It was nine years before Masi felt the vines were expressing their full potential (Masi had been using a small portion of it in their 'Toar' wine since 1990) and in 1995 'Osar' was created. 20% Corvina was added to give the wine a bit of 'velvety charm'. The word 'Osar' has three meanings: one, its root is the same as Oseleta; two, in the Valpolicella local dialect it is a cry of joy (Osar!); and three, in Italian it means 'to dare'.

Belle Glos is Chuck Wagner's (of Caymus fame) project in Santa Maria Valley that focuses on Pinot Noir. The name honours Chuck's mother Lorna Belle Glos Wagner who, along with her husband Charlie, founded Caymus Vineyards.

Tasting note: This wine ... is the first release from this winery. It is produced from grapes on a 75-acre vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley (Santa Barbara). It lies on a west-facing slope just 13 miles from the ocean, permitting cool inland air to flow in, perfect for growing pinot noir. The winemaker is Jon Bolta. This pinot noir is delicious with aromas of raspberry, subtle spice and earthiness. The fresh flavors of bright berry fruit further enhance this soft, almost silky wine. This old estate (first established as a vineyard/winery in the late 19th century) has had its ups and downs. In fact, between 1946 and the 1970s, the property was converted over to other agricultural uses. With the increased prosperity of Bordeaux wines, the vineyards were replanted in the mid-70s with 40% Merlot and 30% each of the two Cabernets. Today, Château Puygueraud is considered the best winery in the appellation.
