|
750 mL |
| |
The distillery's unique stock of original antique vintage whiskies, dating as far back as 1841, allows this "chateau of malt whisky" to bring to life the spirit and soul of Victorian times through this new limited edition bottling. According to Bob Dalgarno, The Macallan's whisky maker, the task of replicating such an old bottle is one of the biggest challenges any whisky maker can undertake . "So it is incredibly satisfying when you manage to get as close to the original as we have with the 1876 replica," said Mr. Dalgarno. The development of the replica bottle saw master glassmakers, Stolzle Flaconnage, turn back time . to create a bottle which mimics the scratches, bubbles and asymmetry of the original. |
Mexico 750 mL
(Vinomex) |
| |
| Sotol, like tequila, is a type of mescal (a distillate from the agave species of plant, a member of the lily family). The sotol plant is a cousin of the Blue Agave that is used in the best tequilas. Like tequila, sotol has specific rules about its production, i.e., what plant can be used and where it must be grown. Sotol may only be grown in the Chihuahua region of Mexico. Now, before you start making 'tiny dog' jokes, remember that sotol is gaining respect in Mexico as an alternative to blue agave tequila which is becoming increasingly rare as the plant is in serious decline. So, for the truly adventurous, here is a 'new' spirit to explore. |

Tasting note: Intensely minty, meaty and menthol-like aromas of cassis, plums and sweet vanilla oak precede a firm, powdery and structured palate whose slightly cooked plum, currant and pruney fruit delivers length and some leathery charm. (Katnook Estate) |
| |
|
Vintages is pleased to be able to offer both the 2000 and 2002 vintages of this popular wine. Availability will vary from store to store.
Tasting note: (2000 vintage) Medium and smooth in the mouth, the Cab's so prevalent here you'd think there was more than 52% here. There's sturdy blackberry and black plum fruit on the palate, plus some eucalyptus and toast; dry, oaky tannins finish it off. A very good, though textbook, sort of wine. Score - 87. (Wine Enthusiast, June 2003)
Tasting note: (2002 vintage) It's a great thing to find a Coonawarra wine that's good and inexpensive. Its smooth texture is an asset . Its plum fruit is fairly taut, and has gumtree-earthy accents, rather than sweetish, caramelly ones. Though I detected greenness on the nose right out of the bottle, it dissipates with time in the glass. Score - 88. (Wine Enthusiast, May 2005) |

'Valentin Clementine Margaux', AC Bordeaux (XD) 750 mL
(Béatrice et Vincent Rapin) |

Tasting note: An incredibly flavourful, deeply coloured Bordeaux. The colour is deep ruby; the aromas are of raspberry, cedar, new leather and smoked meat; the palate is dry, very flavourful, balanced yet impactful. It is ready to drink, but will also reward short-term cellaring (1-2 years). (D. Churchill/G. MacDonald, VINTAGES, June 2005)
Food match: herb-encrusted roast beef with roasted potatoes. |

'Hypogée' translates into English as hypogene, a Greek-derived word that means 'produced under the surface of the earth', a rather apt reference to how important soil is to grapes. This wine is a blend of 40% Syrah, 40% Carignan and 20% Grenache.
Tasting note: A smoky, black cherry, oak spice and pepper-infused wine that is quite full and intense on the palate. The tannins are evident enough that this wine will reward 4+ years in a cellar. (VINTAGES panel, Sept. 2004) |

| Bandol, the most serious wine of Provence, [is] typically a deep-flavoured, lush red blend dominated by the Mourvèdre grape. Like Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Bandol produces quintessentially Mediterranean red wines which are easy to appreciate despite their longevity. (Jancis Robinson, Oxford Companion to Wine, 2nd Edition, 1999) Our panel found a lovely collect-ion of aromas here, including cherry, anise, marzipan and garrigue. This warm and balanced wine would be a fine match for grilled beef sausage or lamb dishes. |
