New at Vintages
585844 'FLOR DE CAÑA CENTENARIO' 12 YEAR OLD RUM     $  39.95

Nicaragua  750 mL
(Compania Licorera de Nicaragua)

This sugar cane plantation (est. 1890) was converted to a rum distillery in 1937. Today, Compania Licoreria de Nicaragua boasts one of the world's largest collections of aged rums. Connoisseurs consider Flor de Caña superior to Cuban rum and other expensive brands. (Lonely Planet Guide: Central America, 2001)

Tasting note: The taste is equal parts sweet richness and firm spirit; at midpalate the silky texture totally beguiles the tastebuds with a blanket of molasses. An ideal after-dinner sipping rum. Superb. Highly recommended.   Score - 90-95.   (Wine Enthusiast, April 2001)

Liqueur
59873 WRAY & NEPHEW 'RUMONA' JAMAICAN RUM LIQUEUR     $  19.95

Jamaica  (S)  750 mL

When we think of Jamaica, we think of the three 'R's: rum, reggae and Rasta. Vintages would like to propose a fourth 'R': Rumona - Jamaica's superb rum-based liqueur. Made with rum and a selection of secret ingredients, Rumona, chilled or on ice, is just the ticket when you want to kick back and give a listen to your old Peter Tosh or Bob Marley records.

Spirits - June 11 Release
Canadian Whisky
541912 'CENTURY RESERVE' 21 YEARS OLD     $  39.95

British Columbia
(Century Distilling)

Tasting note: Old gold coloured whisky reveals floral, spicy rye, lemon-vanilla cake and corn syrup notes. Really smooth and elegant, with the oak age giving it more pull to take the sweet edge off the grain. When I see the prices for cognac and single malts, and then a price like this for an aged spirit, I'm glad we have other options to explore.   Score - 90.   (Patricia Noonan, Wine Access "First In Line E-Report", Jan. 2004)

Irish Whiskey
655837 KNAPPOGUE CASTLE IRISH SINGLE MALT  1994   $  64.95

Very Special Reserve, Btld. 2004  700 mL
(Castle Brands)

Irish Single Malts are still considered a rarity because, until very recently, almost all Irish Whiskies were blends from several distilleries. Light yet complex, Knappogue Castle's single malt is an excellent way to discover this new world of Irish Whiskey.

656017 INISHOWEN IRISH WHISKEY     $  32.95

  700 mL
(Cooley Distillery)

Tasting note: Genuinely lovely stuff for those with a favourable dispostion towards heavier whiskies, something not normally associated with Irish.   (Jim Murray, www.cooleywhiskey.com)

Scotch Whisky
96479 'TOMATIN' 12 YEAR OLD HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT     $  45.95

  750 mL

Tomatin is pronounced Tom-AT-in. In Gaelic, Tomatin means 'Hill of the Juniper'. Whisky expert Michael Jackson found this 12-year-old - currently the only malt they have released from this reopened property - 'smooth and velvety' with a mellow and round palate and a sweet pleasant refreshing mintiness on the finish.  (Michael Jackson, Malt Whisky Companion, 5th Edition, 2004)

955260 'TAMNAVULIN' 12 YEARS OLD SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT     $  56.95

  700 mL

Tasting note: Here's a twelve year old with loads of personality. At first, the palest gold appearance, and then the nose befriends you with peat, cereal, citrus and the not unpleasant medicinal smell of nettle tonic. Engagingly light, very smooth and everything harmonizes into a persistent finish.   Score - 91.   (Patricia Noonan, Wine Access "First In Line E-Report", Jan. 2004)

Vodka
597559 'TITO'S HANDMADE' VODKA     $  39.95

Austin, Texas  750 mL
(Bottoms Up Beverage Co.)

At the 2001 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, while up against well-known brands such as Stolichnaya, Ketel One, Belvedere, Chopin, Skyy and Smirnoff, 'Tito's Handmade' Vodka won Double Gold for the Best Vodka of show.

Rum
990218 CRUZAN 'SINGLE BARREL ESTATE' RUM     $  46.95

Virgin Islands  750 mL

Tasting note: Superlative ... A silky entry leads to a very smooth, oily, dry, medium body with intense Christmas spice, praline, tropical fruit, and oak elements that linger on the finish. An outstandingly complex and flavorful rum with a Cognac-like profile.   Score - 96.   (Beverage Testing Institute, www.tastings.com, June 5, 2002)

Liqueur
94649 GRAND MARNIER CUVÉE DU CENT-CINQUANTENAIRE     $  234.95

1827-1977, France  (S)  750 mL
(Marnier-Lapostolle)

A true classic liqueur. Serve as you would a fine cognac.

Tasting note: ... a defining moment in the world of liqueurs ... nothing short of perfection; it gives amazing satisfaction after a meal.   Score - ***** (out of 5).   (F. Paul Pacult, Kindred Spirits, 1997)

108704 GRAND MARNIER CUVÉE DU CENTENAIRE     $  129.95

1827-1927, France  (S)  750 mL
(Marnier-Lapostolle)

This exquisite liqueur is the newest addition to the VINTAGES Essentials Collection.

Tasting note: ... this is a clinic on how to create the perfect liqueur aroma - exquisite balance; in the mouth, the opulence of the texture carries the flavour impact to the taste buds like a jewel - the orange taste is secondary to the old cognac ... you could look up the term 'liqueur' in the dictionary and you'd find a picture of this Grand Marnier there. Score - ***** (out of 5). (F. Paul Pacult, Kindred Spirits, 1997)

'Director's Reserve'  (S)  750 mL

Tasting note: Wonderful aromas of butterscotch, toffee and honey, with just a hint of fruit. Full-bodied, with very sweet fruit and a long caramel and nutty finish. Textbook. Cockburn is the business in old tawnies right now. Drink now.   Score - 94.   (www.winespectator.com, Sept. 30, 2003)

596627 CHURCHILL GRAHAM LBV PORT  1998   $  23.95

Late Bottled Vintage, Btld. 2002  (S)  750 mL

VQA Niagara Peninsula  (XD)  750 mL

Tasting note: This is the first vintage of this wine that has included Merlot. The addition is most welcome as the cherry fruit tones commonly seen in Merlot round out this blend nicely. Other aromas suggest baker's chocolate, raspberry and spice. Dry and crisp with ripe tannins and very good fruit extract. Medium-bodied with a lingering finish. Enjoy with Roast beef or pasta with a robust meat sauce.   (VINTAGES panel, April 2005)

East Coast, North Island  (D)  750 mL

Paper magnate John Spencer owns 2200 hectares on the beautiful Waiheke Island but only has 28 hectares currently under vine. The grapes for this Chardonnay were grown on the mainland on the North Island near Gisborne because the vines at Stony Batter are not mature enough to produce the style of wine for which Spencer was searching.
