Vodka
699371  'SIWUCHA' VODKA    $ 23.95

Poland  500 mL
(Zielona Gora)

Tasting note: Possibly the single most outstanding achievement by any entrant at [the 2002 International Spirits Challenge] was the award of Trophy status to Siwucha, a premium Polish vodka . A rye vodka with 40% [alcohol by volume], the brand was launched only four years ago. The presentation is very traditional, a [500 mL] bottle with a cork and a wax closure.Ian Wisniewski, chairman of the judging panel for vodka, explained the panel's decision: "We blind tasted forty-one vodkas. Siwucha stood head and shoulders above the rest because it has a bigger, rounder flavour than people expect from a vodka [this is the first vodka to ever win Trophy status at the International Spirits Challenge]. (Drinks International, July/Aug. 2002)

Rum
New at Vintages
994426  'OLD TRINIDAD' RUM   $ 44.95

Caroni Distillery, 'The Secret Treasures of the Caribbean', With Gift Tube  700 mL
(S. Fassbind)

Caroni has been a going concern in Trinidad in one form or another since 1627. Fassbind individually select the barrels that are aged in Caroni Distillery's cellars before bottling. Fassbind is a Swiss firm that is developing an excellent reputation for hunting down tiny quantities of distinctive rums from producers who are too small to bottle the product themselves. In this case, Fassbind is acting like the independent bottlers you frequently see associated with single malt Scotch.

This Scotch is 27 years old. The famous beverage alcohol retailer Berry Bros. & Rudd have over the last 10 years showcased Glenrothes as their 'house malt'. Berry Bros. was established in 1690 as a seller of tea, groceries and wine. In the 1920s, they launched the Cutty Sark blended whisky, of which Glenrothes has always played a central part. In the late 1980s, they began offering vintage-dated single malt offerings from the distillery itself, of which this is one of the latest offerings.

972109  'SOLERA 1847'    $ 15.95

Oloroso Dulce  (MS)  750 mL
(González Byass)

'Solera 1847' means that this wine's Solera system was first established in 1847. The Solera system is often literally a pyramid of barrels. On the bottom is the oldest stock, on the top is the newest. As you fill the 'bottles' from the bottom barrel, you replenish it with the product from the row above and onwards upwards. The top row of barrels are filled with the newest Sherries. This system allows producers to create non-vintage products that, theoretically, taste the same year in and year out. It is believed there is always a few drops of the original 1847 Sherry in every bottle of this product.

Food match: dried fruits, Manchego or Parmesan cheeses.

Port
Vintages Cellar Selection
999300  'CHURCHILL'S' VINTAGE PORT  1994 $ 54.95

Btld. 1996  (S)  375 mL
(Churchill Graham)

Some of the flavours and nuances will have evolved since James Suckling wrote his tasting note. Suckling sampled the 750 mL bottles and his commentary on the ageability and quality is still very valid. We can safely assume that the 375 mL bottle has evolved somewhat more rapidly. Buy a couple of bottles, open one tonight. Sample it and determine for yourself how long you should hold the second bottle. Is the Wine Spectator right in recommending 'after 2010'. Your tastebuds will tell you what you need to know.

Tasting note: A gorgeous, voluptuous young Port, best Churchill ever. Intense aromas of dark chocolate and grapes. Full-bodied, with powerful, chewy tannins, yet it's sweet and fruity on the finish. Try after 2010. Score - 93. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, April 1997)

998559  'DALVA' VINTAGE PORT   2000  $ 69.95

Btld. 2002  (S)  750 mL
(C. da Silva Vinhos)

Tasting note: An excellent 2000 Vintage Port from a lesser-known da Silva line, 'Dalva'. Deep purple colour with aromas of raisin, mincemeat and blueberry pie. Sweet, but with superior balance for long term ageing supplied by fine-grain tannins and refreshing acidity. Full-bodied with a very long, very elegant finish. Cellar 5 to 15+? years. (David Churchill, Vintages, March 2004)

133751  10 YEARS OLD TAWNY PORT   $ 39.95

Quinta de Ervamoira, with Gift Box  (S)  750 mL
(Adriano Ramos Pinto)

Dessert Wine
943050  VINTAGE FORTIFIED SHIRAZ   2001 $ 17.95

McLaren Vale, South Australia  (S)  375 mL
(d'Arenberg Wines)

Made with Shiraz from d'Arenberg's McLaren Vale vineyards, this Vintage Fortified Shiraz is made in a similar manner to Port. The ripe grapes are allowed to ferment to a determined level. A neutral grape spirit is then added, arresting the fermentation thus retaining the sweetness level and raising the alcohol, in this case to 19% alc./vol. The finished wine is bottled after only a very short period in oak. This fortified wine has the ability to age many years in a cellar.

In-store Discovery
994590  MARSALA SUPERIORE   $ 19.95

DOC, 'Arini', Garibaldi  (MS)  750 mL
(Vito Curatolo)

To be designated 'Superiore', Marsala must mature a minimum of two years in oak casks. Marsala is slowly regaining its reputation as a classic fortified wine after slack DOC rules between the 1969 and 1985 allowed such unusual things such as egg, almond, coffee or chocolate to be legally be added to the wine. These are now all banned; now fine producers such as Curatolo are creating a product that may be enjoyed as one does a tawny port or sweeter sherry. As always, Marsala may also find a happy home in the kitchen for creating such classic dishes as veal scallopini or zabaglione.

997536  SAMOS 'VIN DOUX'  $  7.95

Greece  (S)  375 mL
(Union des Cooperatives Vinicoles de Samos)

Tasting note: Medium yellow gold/orange colour with aromas of orange marmalade, citrus and butterscotch. Medium sweet and thick but surprisingly not mouth-coating. It is, in fact, quite lively in the mouth. Medium-bodied with a medium long, elegant finish. (David Churchill, Vintages, Jan. 2004)

Food match: fresh fruit cocktail.

May 22 Release
Sherry
928234  'LA INA'    $ 15.95

Very Pale Dry Fino  (D)  750 mL
(Pedro Domecq)

Due to the way the Solera system works - see 'Solera 1847' Oloroso Dulce from Gonzalez-Byass (972109) in this month's May 8th release for an explanation of the Solera system - this Sherry is designed to taste similar year in and year out.

Tasting note: If you've never considered dry fino sherry as a cold summer pre-barbecue aperitif, consider it now. This solid brand delivers intense aromas of salted cashews, overripe apples and barley sugar. Good weight and textural finesse with a tangy, dry nutty, sour cream finish. Great with canapes, even a bowl of tortilla chips. Score - 89. (David Lawrason, Wine Access, "First In Line E-Report", Oct. 2001)

Port
995886  VINTAGE PORT  1982  $ 89.95

Btld. 1982  (MS)  750 mL
(Wiese & Krohn)

Although virtually unknown in our market, Wiese & Krohn was established in 1865 by two Norwegian expatriates, Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn. Originally established strictly as an export business for Port wines to Scandinavian markets and Germany, by 1880 they began to expand into producing and selling their own products. Today, this company is wholly Portuguese owned.

Tasting note: Mid garnet colour with gentle aromas of prune, plum and chocolate raisin. Only medium in sweetness, supple, gentle and very approachable. Medium-bodied with a medium long, elegant finish. (David Churchill, Vintages, March 2004)

Food match: fruit flan, medium-aged cheeses.

VQA Niagara Peninsula  (MD)  750 mL
(Legends Estates Winery)

Tasting note: This is a very rich in the mouth Riesling. Its aromas suggest tropical fruit, peaches and oranges. Although it is medium dry at first, the fine acid has an immediate impact, making the wine taste much drier than it first appears. (Vintages panel, Oct. 2003)

Food match: spiced shrimp stir-fry.

626382  VIOGNIER   2002  $ 19.95

Viognier is an historically rare grape variety whose dominance was limited to a few small appellations of the northern Rhone. Since the early 1990's Viognier has experienced a renaissance of popularity which has expanded its sphere of influence to include areas of Southern France, Australia, California and the Niagara Peninsula. Viognier's trademark is heady perfume and moderate acidity, and it is generally considered to show best in its youth (2-4 years). Fermented and aged 10 months in French oak barriques. Tasting note: Pale straw colour. This fruity and crisp Chenin Blanc has aromas that suggest applesauce, cinnamon, wax and mushroom.   Martinborough, North Island  (XD)  750 mL
(Te Kairanga Wines)

A superb autumn in 2002 allowed the grapes to be left on the vine until optimum ripeness was achieved. The wines were 100% barrel fermented then allowed to go through acid-softening malolactic fermentation. The wines were then aged for 10 months in French barriques (20% new).

Food match: steamed mussels, grilled veal cutlets.

991463  CHARDONNAY   2002  $ 19.95

(Goldwater Wine)

Tasting note: A deliciously complex Marlborough style evolving, becoming rich and very tasty with full strength alcohol. A nicely flavoursome wine with some minerally, river-stone hints working very well as a spine for the ripe grapefruit tones. Top flight Chardonnay with a lot to say over the next two or three years.   WO Walker Bay  (XD)  750 mL
(Beaumont Wine)

Tasting note: Always a benchmark (& serious) example, from old vines. 03's fermentation cooler than pvs to retain more fruit; 6% barrel-fermented 'for extra structure' says [winemaker] Sebastian [Beaumont]. Restrained melon & cream flavours, herbal notes, finely-drawn limey finish. Good value. (Tony Mossop, John Platter South African Wines 2004)

Though the producer does not indicate this, the aroma profile suggests that some Chardonnay Musqué, a clone of Chardonnay showing so much promise in Ontario, was used in the blend.

Tasting note: The aromas on this wine are quite aromatic for Chardonnay, reminiscent of apple, apricot, mandarine orange and pear. This dry wine is also quite impressive on the palate too, with many of the aromas reappearing in the flavours. A very fresh, full-bodied wine. (Vintages panel, June 2003)

Macedonia  (D)  750 mL
(E. Tsantali)

Here is another grape with a tricky name, Assyrtiko (pronounced A-sear-tee-ko) that is definitely worth discovering. Native to the beautiful and hot Greek island of Santorini, it has the ability to retain a remarkable level of acidity even in hot climates. It is one of the native Greek grapes that mainland growers are now starting to plant in increasing numbers due to its adaptability. Our Quality Assurance Laboratory has determined that this organic product contains 6ppm of free sulphur.

'8 Vineyard', Western Australia  (D)  750 mL
(Western Range Wines)

Western Range is a unique venture. Established in 2001, it is, for lack of a better term, an Australian take on the wine co-operative. From the mid-1990s to 2001, several individual growers came together. Between them they have 110 ha (270 acres) of vines covering every major Australian varietal you would care to name. They built a substantial winery and now make several wines from these vineyards under the umbrella name of Western Range. However, that does not mean that all the grapes on each partner's property goes through Western Range. If they so wish, any partner is also free to create single vineyard wines from their own properties and release them without any reference to Western Range.

Martinborough, North Island  (XD)  750 mL
(Te Kairanga Wines)

The weather in the 2002 vintage blessed the region with warm, not hot, days and cool, not cold, nights. As a result, these Pinot Noir grapes had a luxuriously slow and long ripening period. The fruit was picked at the height of ripeness in the cool morning air then fermented traditionally in small two to three tonne vats. The wines were then matured for 10 months in various French oak barriques (20% new). A final blend of the individual clones (three distinct ones were used) from different vineyards and barrel treatments was completed just prior to bottling.

Tasting note: From a progressive estate in prime mid-Marlborough territory, this bright, amiable young pinot noir comes under a Stelvin screw cap - and the packaging is as smart and classy as anywhere or any style in the world. A no-brainer for trend conscious restaurateurs. The wine shows moderate depth with cherry colour. The nose is a gentle blend of raspberry, earth and pine with nicely etched oak spice and tobacco. Very gentle on the palate, with good to very good length. Score - 88. (www.wineaccess.ca, 2003)

The vintage in 1997 was one of the early 'great' vintages in the recent history of South Africa. Tasting note: Clearly no expense spared in fruit selection or wood treatment, though no new oak used for 00 to not overwhelm the fruit, which is less succulent than pvs; sleeker build, tight tannins need time to soften, meld. Tasting note: This cru, famous for its legend of the White Lady and its wineries, which are listed historic monuments, is located at the gates of [the city of] Bordeaux. It belongs to five sisters, hence the name of this particular wine. Dark in colour, it has a bouquet in which cherry and blackcurrant manage to find expression in a miscellany still dominated by the oak. The palate reveals sufficient body to allow the different elements to blend together in time. (The Hachette Guide to French Wines 2004)

Tasting note: Decadent aromas of crushed plums, with raw meat. Full-bodied, silky and refined. Good value. Not exactly "the" Mouton, but very good indeed. And a fraction of the price. Best after 2005. Score - 89. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, March 31, 2003)

979880  CHÂTEAU MONTROSE   2001   $ 94.95

AC St-Estèphe, 2e Cru  (XD)  750 mL

Tasting note: The 2001 Montrose (which represents 64% of the total production) is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. It is one of the vintage's most powerful and concentrated wines. An impressive powerhouse as well as a thick, unctuous effort, it possesses freshness, full body, high tannin, low acidity, admirable extract, and loads of creme de cassis fruit intermixed with leather, chocolate, liquid minerals, and earth. There is noticeable tannin in this blockbuster. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030. Score - 91-93. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, April 2003)

As a négociant, Georges Duboeuf releases several single estate products, including this exceptional product from this Juliénas château. Château des Poupets has been owned by the Jorcin family since 1930. Since the death of her husband, Madame Jorcin continues to manage the small 7.4 acres (3 ha) property. Respecting her late husbands wishes, the wines are matured, as they always have been, in oak barrels rather than the more practical (and conventional for Beaujolais) stainless steel.

AC Minervois  (D)  750 mL
(Château de Gourgazaud)

Château de Gourgazaud has a very simple philosophy summed up best in a quote from owner Roger Piquet: "You wouldn't eat underripe fruit, why would you drink wine from underripe grapes?" The 170 acres (70 ha) of vineyards, of which 100 acres (40 ha) are under the AC, and the rest, Vin de Pays d'Oc, are some of the most beautiful in the wine world. The plateau where the majority of the AC grapes grow seems to stretch off until it meets the horizon. And true to the philosophy, the wines, especially the reds, are perfectly ripe, but never overripe. Their Vin de Pays d'Oc Viognier (grown right beside their AC wines) is also available in this release (734533, ).

Vin de Pays du Var  (D)  750 mL
(Domaine de Triennes)

This old property is believed to have been planted to vines since the time of the Etruscans. Burgundian superstar partners Jacques Seysses (of Domaine Dujac) and Aubert de Villaine (of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti) discovered it in 1990 and pulled up everything except the oldest vines (Cinsault) and replanted based on a careful analysis of the terroir: Chardonnay on the 'Burgundian' soils; Viognier on the whitest soils; Syrah on the reddest, Merlot on the thinnest, best draining section and Cabernet Sauvignon on the heavier, slightly cooler soils. 'St Auguste' is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.

998237  BAROLO VIGNOLO RISERVA  1998   $ 84.95

DOCG  (XD)  750 mL
(Fratelli Cavallotto)

Cavallotto is a traditional house in that they still prefer to exclusively age for four years in a series of differing sized Slavonian oak casks and not the French barriques as many of the modernists do. As a result, Cavallotto's exceptional Barolos frequently need substantial ageing. The Vignolo vineyard is tiny, measuring a mere 1.57 hectares (4 acres).

927368  BARBARESCO  1999   $ 49.95

DOCG  (XD)  750 mL
(Silvio Grasso)

Two of the most dynamic producers/ vignerons of the Barbaresco appellation are the brothers Luigi and Alfredo Grasso. They represent the third generation of winemakers on the property. Currently they own and operate 14 hectares (35 acres) of vineyards divided into two properties in the Barbaresco DOCG: Cascina Valgrande and Bricco Spessa. The Grassos produce this Barbaresco in the modern style, meaning it tends to be much more fruit forward than the traditional interpretations.

Tasting note: Plum, fresh herb and spice, with simple fruit, medium body and round tannins. Pleasant. Best after 2006. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, Nov. 15, 2003)

After a brief stay in stainless steel, Scavino transfers his Barolo to French barriques for 12 months, and then a further 12 months in French oak tonneau (a 900 litre barrel, the equivalent of 4 barriques.)

Tasting note: The 1999 Barolo is far more than a regular bottling. A full garnet with raisins, plums, and chocolate on the nose, its depth, freshness, and velvet add up to much immediate drinking pleasure. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2014. Score - 89. Tasting note: Attractive wild berry aromas and hints of minerals. Medium-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a chewy, fruity finish. Rather tight right now, but shows very good potential. Best after 2006. Score - 90. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, Nov. 30, 2002)

Tasting note: A fruity and straightforward Barolo, with licorice, leather and berry character. Full-bodied, with medium chewy tannins and a coffee aftertaste. Better than the 1998. Best after 2007. (James Suckling, www.winespectator.com, Nov. 30, 2003)

(Castello Banfi)

The Sant'Antimo DOC was created in 1996. Named for the Sant'Antimo abbey in the Montalcino commune, the DOC can actually include the entire Montalcino region. It was created in an effort by the area's producer to 'classify' all the wines made in the commune. The rules have a vagueness around them that seem to permit almost any grape. For example, under the rules, both red and white grapes allowed are defined as 'locally authorized' grapes. Varietal identification is also allowed on the label, but if it states it, it must contain at least 85% of that grape.

Sliven  (XD)  750 mL
(Domaine Boyar)

Named for Czar Simeon II. Fifty four years after being deposed, Simeon II returned to Bulgaria, founded a political party, won half the parlimentary seats in a June 2001 election and became Bulgaria's premier.

Tasting note: Deep burgundy colour leads to lovely aromas reminiscent of cherry and sweet oak. It is dry and though the fruit is certainly there, the firm tannins give it a balance that would complement food. (Vintages panel, July 2003)

Food match: rare cuts of meat.

996223  MONTHELIE  1999   $ 28.95

AC, 'Les Villages de Jaffelin'  (D)  750 mL
(Jaffelin)

Considering how important winemaking is to the village of Monthelie, it is ironic that it is a virtually unknown Burgundy region in our market. Winemaking is so all-consuming that, as the old joke goes, at grape harvest time, the chickens nearly starve. The style of red wine is said to fall somewhere between the elegance of Auxey-Duresses and the richness of Volnay.

Tasting note: Light ruby colour with aromas of cherry/berry and a fine 'rooty' note. Dry with a nicely ripe centre. This well-balanced, medium-bodied wine has a medium long finish. (Vintages panel, Aug. 2003)

(Domaine Hortala)

Tasting note: A wine that will benefit from a short stay in a cellar, it is still aromatic, with aromas suggesting blackberry jam, black olives, dried herbs and dark chocolate. It is dry and flavourful, but it is also surrounded by a firm tannins and spice on the finish. (Vintages panel, Aug. 2003)

Food match: rare roast beef with roasted potatoes.

AC, 'Montirius'  (XD)  750 mL
(Christine et Eric Saurel, Prop.-Récolt.)

Tasting note: Although closed, the dark ruby/purple-colored 2000 Vacqueyras reveals high tannin, plenty of black fruits, a lean finish, but tremendous persistence as well as length, suggesting a wine of very high quality. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2012. Score - 88. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Feb. 2003)

(Jean-Louis Chave)

Jean-Louis Chave was one of our special guests at out second Young Winemakers event held at the Distillery District in Toronto on November 19, 2003. This wine, 'Mon Cour', was quite popular with attendees.

Tasting note: The 2000 Côtes-du-Rhône Mon Coeur (50-60% Syrah and the rest Grenache), a 3,000-case cuvee aged both in tank and old barrel, possesses loads of fruit with good peppery, spicy notes, impeccable purity, and a supple texture. It should drink well for 2-3 years. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2003)

AC, 'Domaine Pontifical'  (XD)  750 mL
(Vign. François Laget-Royer)

Tasting note: Domaine Pontifical's 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape performed even better from bottle than it did from foudre. In fact, it may be the finest wine this estate has produced since their glorious 1989. Full-bodied and deep, with copious cassis and kirsch-like flavors, a sexy, opulent texture, and a long, concentrated, impressive finish, this superb offering can be drunk now and over the next dozen years. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Feb. 2003)

The 2000, released last year, was quite popular with Vintages customers and we are pleased to follow up with this 2001. Dorigo makes their single-vineyard Pinot Nero (a.k.a. Pinot Noir) in a fruit-forward, easy-drinking style. It is rounded out by short time in French barriques.

DOC Molise  (XD)  750 mL
(Di Majo Norante)

Owner Alessio Di Majo's decision to bring in Riccardo Cotarella and to source the Aglianico grapes from a new vineyard for their 'Contado' wine paid dividends with the 1999 vintage (it was awarded Gambero Rosso's highest honour of 3 Glasses). Although the 2000 had not been reviewed at press time, expect equally impressive results.

Tasting note: The outstanding, opaque garnet-colored 1997 Barolo Vigna Broglio is a powerful, impressively endowed effort with copious aromas of black cherry fruit, cedar, fruitcake, dried herbs, licorice, and hints of new oak. Impressive purity, symmetry, and overall winemaking make this an exceptional effort. Tannin in the finish suggests several years of cellaring is warranted. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2016. Score - 90. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, June 2001)

(Henry of Pelham)

Each year, Henry of Pelham adjusts their Rosé blend. In this vintage, it is a 44/29/26/1 blend of Zweigelt, Gamay Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. This is the first vintage since 1996 that they have used Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. Due to the cooler 2003 summer, they found they would rather use it here to make a terrific rosé than to produce a good, but not great Cabernet Sauvignon.
