Spirits
September 4 Release
Irish Whiskey
695445  'CONNEMARA' 12 YEAR OLD     $  129.95

Peated Single Malt  700 mL
(Cooley Distillery)

This rather rare whiskey (only a very small quantity is produced each year) won a Gold Medal at the 2004 San Francisco World Spirit Competition.

Tasting note: This year also sees the coming of age of Cooley, Ireland's only independent distillery. It has just launched a 12 year old version of its peated single malt Connemara, and it's an absolute cracker. (Peter Mulryan, www.whiskymag.com, Dec. 2003)

475921  'CONNEMARA' PURE POT STILL     $  66.95

Peated Single Malt with Gift Tube  750 mL
(Cooley Distillery)

Cooley Distillery is at the leading edge of reintroducing peating to Irish Whiskey.

Tasting note: I remember marveling at the intricate tile work using Connemara marble and now I have something else to admire from that part of Ireland, in this peated offering of whisky, with its perfumed peat smoke nose, and the same again flavour wise. It has some malt sweetness which blends into a spicy finish. Score - 90. (Patricia Noonan, Wine Access, "First In Line E-Report", Nov. 2003)

Scotch Whisky
981084  ARRAN ISLAND SINGLE MALT     $  48.95

'Robert Burns World Federation'  700 mL
(Isle of Arran Distillers)

The Isle of Arran distillery was opened in 1995, so most of their whiskies are not yet age-designated.

Tasting note: Pale wheat straw colour with aromas of heather, flowers, dried peach, new wood and a hint of peat and brine. Dry, fragrant, creamy/buttery textured with a touch of heat on the mid-palate. Light-bodied with a lingering warm floral finish. (VINTAGES panel, April 2003)

New Zealand Whisky
New at Vintages
643338  'MILFORD' 10 YEAR OLD  1992   $  54.95

Btld 2003, Single Malt Whisky  750 mL
(The New Zealand Malt Whisky Co.)

Milford Whisky has been produced for over 30 years in New Zealand. The barley is all sourced from the South Island, and the water is runoff from melted snow out of the Lammerlaw mountain range. The water collects in the 'Great Moss Swamp' where the distillery also sources its peat. Until three years ago, when new owners took over, the whiskies were released under the 'Lammerlaw' name. This is perhaps the perfect dram to sip while watching the New Zealand-filmed Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Tasting note: Nose: Dry and malty/oaty (accentuated with water). Light vanilla, creme caramel, some dried apricot. Palate: Herbal tea with some citrus notes and nutmeg. A little too light with water. Finish: Dry, slight wood. Comment: Well-made, light and clean. Good balance. (Dave Broom, www.whiskymag.com, July 2002)

620039  WILLIAMSBIRNEN BRAND      $  54.95

Feinster Edelbrand, Austria  500 mL
(Destillerie Franz Bauer)

Unlike many pear eaux-de-vie that are made by infusing pear into an alcohol base, Bauer distills the pear fruit from the very start of the process. Dry pear eaux-de-vie such as this one are best enjoyed chilled after a hearty meal, especially during the first cool nights of autumn.

927871  ACQUAVITE DI MELE COTOGNE      $  49.95

Trentino, Italy  500 mL
(Distilleria Pilzer)

Acquavite di Mele Cotogne is made with quince. Although quince looks like a pear, this high acid fruit, most often used in cooking and making jams, is actually part of the rose family.

Tasting note: A true intense dry quince aroma and flavour with a lovely spiciness wrapped all around it. Enjoy it out of snifter after a fine meal. (VINTAGES panel, June 2003)

New at Vintages
643346  '42 BELOW' VODKA      $  39.95

New Zealand  750 mL
(42 Below Distillery)

Tasting note: Highly Recommended. Smells of wet cement or damp stones in the initial minutes before the aromas shift gears, offering toasty, ash-like, smoky scents of tobacco leaf, roasted cereals, pencil eraser and vegetable oil. Palate entry shows an oily texture and tastes of charcoal and mildly sweet grain; midpalate displays well-structured flavors of lead pencil, off-dry grain and licorice. Finishes full in the mouth, acceptably fiery and off-dry. Score - 90-95. (Wine Enthusiast, April 2003)

Miscellaneous Spirits
538157  YENI RAKI      $  24.95

Tekirdag, Turkey  750 mL
(Tekel Distillery)

Tasting note: Clear, but like ouzo or other anise based spirits, turns milky with the addition of water. Blackball candy with hints of salty black Dutch licorice and caraway seed. A touch of sweet hard candy at first, then fiery, moving to a slightly bitter finish. A little bit different. Score - 89. (Patricia Noonan, Wine Access, "First In Line E-Report", Oct. 2003)

Liqueur
356998  'LAKKA' CLOUDBERRY      $  18.95

'Lapponia', Finland  (S)  500 mL
(V&S Finland Oy)

Tasting note: Cloudberries look like an amber version of raspberries, and are vitamin-mineral rich rare fruit, native to Scandinavian countries. This liqueur has a pale orange-amber hue and a honeyish nose to match. It's a very sweet, opulent marmalade jam concoction. It would work as a replacement for cassis or chambord in a glass of bubbly, or quite simply, cut with soda. Different and interesting. (Patricia Noonan, Wine Access, "First In Line E-Report", Dec. 2001)

353748  'PUOLUKKA' LINGONBERRY      $  18.95

'Lapponia', Finland  (S)  500 mL
(V&S Finland Oy)

Tasting note: Medium deep cherry red colour with aromas of wild blueberry, citrus, cherry drops and a forest floor. Sweet, but ably balanced by an excellent layer of crisp acidity. Medium full-bodied with a long crisp/fruit finish. Enjoy chilled with tart fruit desserts. (David Churchill, Vintages, June 2004)

September 18 Release
Scotch Whisky
642199  'THE ARRAN MALT'      $  48.95

Island of Arran Single Malt  700 mL
(Isle of Arran Distillers)

Silver-Medal winner at the 2003 International Wine & Spirit Competition. Opened in 1995, Isle of Arran Distillery is, to this point, the newest distillery in Scotland. Thus, their malts, such as this and the 'Robert Burns World Federation', available in our September 4th release (981084, page 3), are not yet age-designated.

Tasting note: Colour: Attractive pale yellow. Nose: Fresh, creamy, vanilla-like. Flowery. Body: Creamy. Palate: Fresh cream. Leafy. Vegetal. Angelica [root]. Finish: Children's sweets. Liquorice. Spicy. (Michael Jackson, Malt Whisky Companion 5th Edition, 2004)

Armagnac
949735  ARMAGNAC XO      $  59.95

Bas Armagnac, France  500 mL
(Château de Laubade)

Château de Laubade is the largest producer in the Bas Armagnac sub-region. As such, it has become the benchmark estate for the regional style.

Tasting note: Gentle but firm scents of black pepper, lychee nut, smoke and burnt toast; the smokiness accelerates into tobacco leaf and charred oak aromas, buttressed by an underlying bacon fat-old oak smell. Concentrated flavors of almond butter and nougat make for lip-smacking tasting. Aftertaste is brief, semisweet, tart and a touch smoky. Best Buy. Score - 90-95. (F. Paul Pacult, Wine Enthusiast, Oct. 2002)

Eau-de-Vie
998773  'ORIGINAL WILLISAUER' WILLIAMS      $  26.95

Eau-de-Vie de Poire Williams, Switzerland  500 mL
(DIWISA Distillerie Willisau)

As the cool days of fall approach, why not enjoy this exceptional dry pear eau-de-vie 'hand-warmed' in a brandy snifter?

622423  'HIMBEERGEIST'      $  49.95

'Black Forest Wood', Raspberry Fruit Spirit, Germany  750 mL
(Alfred Schladerer)

To ensure that this fruit spirit retains all the delicate aromas and flavours of the raspberries, the fruit is macerated with almost pure alcohol (96% alcohol by volume). It is then distilled once, the alcohol level is adjusted down before the product is bottled. The finished product's aromas 'speak' of freshly picked wild raspberries. Enjoy this dry raspberry eau-de-vie chilled out of a snifter after a fine meal.

671214  'KOPKE' COLHEITA PORT  1974   $  74.95

Btld. 2004  (S)  750 mL
(C. N. Kopke & Ca.)

Colheita Ports must be aged in wood a minimum of seven years. Many producers, such as Kopke, age far longer - in this case, a full 30 years. As it has spent so much time in wood, decanting is not required. This port will keep for several weeks after it is opened.

741355  LATE BOTTLED VINTAGE  1998   $  25.95

Btld.2002  (S)  750 mL
(Niepoort Vinhos)

As they spend two years longer in oak than Vintage Ports, LBVs rarely need to be decanted before being enjoyed.

Tasting note: Medium deep ruby/garnet colour with aromas of elderberry, raspberry, cocoa, cherry cola, slight spice and nut. Moderately sweet with very good balance. Medium full-bodied with a long, elegant finish. (VINTAGES panel, Dec. 2003)

Food match: blue-veined cheeses.

640268  'KOPKE' COLHEITA PORT 1990     $  29.95

Btld. 2004  (S)  750 mL
(C. N. Kopke & Ca.)

Colheita Ports, from a single vintage, must spend a minimum of seven years ageing in wood prior to bottling. In this case, Kopke kept this in wood for 14 years. As it spent so many years in oak, you do not have to decant this Port. Also, once opened, it should last several weeks without substantial flavour deterioration.

Tasting note: Medium deep garnet colour with aromas of chestnut, pear and dried berries. It is sweet yet elegant; medium-bodied with a long finish. (VINTAGES panel, Dec. 2003)

(Forrester & Ca.)

Tasting note: Wonderful aromas of plums, chocolate and flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate with chewy tannins and a long, rich finish. Punchy red. Btld. 1993  (S)  750 mL
(C.N. Kopke & Ca.)

A rounding, sweet berry, forward Port that is very enjoyable now with dried fruit, nuts or blue-veined cheese. This early maturing vintage Port displays the qualities to come in some of the 1991 vintage's longer ageing cousins.

192377  GRAHAM'S FINE WHITE PORT      $  15.95

  (MS)  750 mL
(W. & J. Graham & Ca.)

Non-vintage Ports are designed to taste similar year in and year out.

Tasting note: White port is sweet, fortified wine made from native white Portuguese varieties. This is actually golden in the glass. The nose shows complex, unusual malt, buckwheat honey, dried straw, cigar and sultana raisin. Quite sweetish, full, and hot on the finish, with almost liqueur-like consistency. Excellent length. Score - 89. (David Lawrason, Wine Access, "First in Line E-Report", July 2003)

Tasting note: Serious stuff here, with a sweet/tart component that has my dentist rubbing his hands with glee. VQA Okanagan Valley  (D)  750 mL
(Inniskillin Okanagan Wines)

Pinot Blanc is an excellent alternative to Chardonnay. It is often as robust as its more famous cousin (they are both 'children' of Pinot Noir and a lesser known grape), but with a streak of acidity and frequently more natural flavour than Chardonnay as it receives less or no oak aging.

Stags' Leap, Napa Valley  (D)  750 mL
(Prod. & Btld. Stags' Leap Winery)

Tasting note: The flamboyant tropical fruit, pear, citrus and floral flavors are balanced by crisp acidity. Very dry, but so rich and ripe. It's oakier than many Viogniers out there, but it easily handles the smoke and toast. Score - 90. (Wine Enthusiast, May 2003)

246090  CHARDONNAY  2002   $  59.95

Red Shoulder Ranch, Carneros  (XD)  750 mL
(Prod. & Btld. Shafer Vineyards)

Tasting note: Shafer has always managed to get an extra measure of stuffing beyond the Carneros norms in its Red Shoulder Ranch offerings, and this latest bottling is dramatic wine of extraordinary depth and intensity. Big, thick and positively palate coating, it avoids the coarseness common to high-alcohol Chardonnays, and its generous, impressively layered flavors of sweet apples, vanillin oak and caramel build and build to a long and intensely fruited finish. It may eschew any claim to elegance but is an absolute tour de force of unrelenting richness. Score - 95. (Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, April 2004)

Food match: smoked turkey breast.

346296  FUMÉ BLANC  2002   $  37.95

Estate Grown, Napa Valley  (XD)  750 mL
(Prod. & Btld. Grgich Hills Cellar)

Tasting note: Mildly herbal in scent and charged with plenty of grass and green-melon fruit in the mouth, the wine is sleek and slightly tangy in taste with bracing acids bringing up the rear. If admittedly a little wiry in style, this one has the clear capacity to keep, yet it will drink famously in the near term with luncheon dishes such as cold salmon dressed with herbed aioli. Score - 91. (Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, Feb. 2004)

The result is a refreshing, flavourful sipper that is ideal as an aperitif or with seafood salads.

In 1947, Perrier became the first Savoie producer to sell wines from their own property in bottles. The region finally obtained its AC designation in 1973. Abymes wines, such as this, are made with the indigenous Jacquère, a grape that produces refreshing, crisp, palate-cleansing wines.

'Limited Edition', VQA Niagara Peninsula  (XD)  750 mL
(Magnotta Winery)

It has long been felt that of all the red Bordeaux grapes, Cabernet Franc shows the most promise in the vineyards of Ontario. This is ably demonstrated here by Magnotta. Recently, the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa selected Magnotta's version for the wine list of their top restaurant.

589705  'ENOTRIUM' GRAN RISERVA  2001   $  43.95

VQA Niagara Peninsula  (D)  750 mL
(Magnotta Winery)

'Enotrium' is the first of its kind in Ontario. A blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc, the grapes are air-dried for 30-90 days (not unlike Amarone). The drying of the grapes causes the sugars to intensify so that the alcohol is higher and the flavours are more intense. In addition, Magnotta ages the wines in oak barrels, adding yet another layer of flavour. Most red wines need about 2 lbs (.900 kg) of grapes per bottle; Enotrium includes 23 lbs (10.43 kg) per bottle.

Many feel the 2002 vintage was one of the finest yet for red wine production in Ontario. It is considered even better than the legendary 1998 because the balance between the heat and the perfect amount of rain was right in line to carefully and accurately ripen the fruit to its fullest. This Meritage is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

Unfiltered, VQA Niagara Peninsula  (XD)  750 mL
(Henry of Pelham)

Henry of Pelham has shown a deft hand at the production of Pinot Noir. Considering how finicky the grape is known to be, winemaker Ron Giesbrecht has worked magic with this grape over the past four vintages. The style is definitely closer to the Burgundian model than the New World style with an excellent balance between fruit, tannin and acid.

VQA Okanagan Valley  (XD)  750 mL
(Mission Hill Family Estate)

Tasting note: Like most shiraz, the fruit is exuberant on the nose offering a spicy clove black fruit scent mixed with toasted oak. On the palate the wine is more syrah-like than shiraz with its dry, earthy, meaty flavours and elevated Euro-acidity. The winery recommends grilled sausages or Provencal cheese - both should help the wine fill out. A solid effort. Score - 88. (Anthony Gismondi, www.gismondionwine.com, Sept. 25, 2003)

Bruce Nicholson was named Winemaker of the Year at the 2004 San Francisco International Wine Competition.

Tasting note: Considering the fruit for this wine came from the arid desert of Osoyoos ... it's no wonder this monster red comes across as a big Aussie red. Designed to showcase the fruit, there's plenty of blueberry, strawberry and cherry, but there's also white chocolate. On the flavour side, it's all supple, velvety dark berry fruits with a solid core of acidity. A hint of sweet oak ties the fabric of this wine together. Drinking well now with some decanting, it should also age well for the next 5-8 years. Vines Award. (Vines Buyer's Guide To Canadian Wine, Third Edition, 2004)

Food match: rare cuts of lamb or buffalo steaks.

Tasting note: Berries and violets along with a bit of dried spice accent the direct, straightforward fruit that lies at the heart of this mid-sized bottling. It is rounded and fairly open on the palate with touches of chocolate to its basic fruit flavors, and it earns a fair look for its reasonable pricing. Tasting note: Sure it's oak, with smoky, bacony and chocolaty aromas, but there are gobs of fruit to support it: plums, blackberries and black currants. It's what a California Cab should be - big, rich and powerful, yet makred by soft, chewy tannins. Score - 91. (Wine Enthusiast, Nov. 2003)

The majority of the vines for this 'old vines' Zin comes from the Domenici Vineyard, the oldest living vineyard in Sonoma County. Many of the vines were planted in the 1880s and are still thriving.

Tasting note: Extremely aromatic and fruity, this is a wonderful Zin, tasting of black raspberry, plum, black pepper, and toasted oak. Very well balanced; long persistent finish. Score - ***** (out of 5). (Restaurant Wine Magazine, June 2003)

346270  CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2001   $  79.95

Napa Valley  (XD)  750 mL
(Prod. & Btld. Shafer Vineyards)

Tasting note: An intense and heady aromatic mix of black cherries and cedar introduces this rich and fairly forward wine, and, if arguably a touch shy on real complexity, its sweet and creamy flavors are long on immediate appeal. It leans to softness with respect to structure and gives ground to a bit of tannic dryness at the end, but it promises to drink nicely with simply roasted meats over the next three to five years. (Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, April 2004)

640573  CABERNET SAUVIGNON  2000   $  25.95

Sonoma County  (D)  750 mL
(Sebastiani Vineyards & Winery)

Tasting note: [The wine is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon,] 17% Merlot; 4% Petite Sirah; 3% Cabernet Franc. Yet another in what is becoming an extended list of Sebastiani successes with very enticing, reasonably priced red wines. And if this one takes a slight back seat to its pricier cellarmate above, it rates above the majority of its market-niche peers. Its deep, smoky and curranty/blackberryish personality runs into a bit of tannin at the end and suggests service with chunks of roasted beef. Good value. Score - 88. (Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine, April 2004)

Before the division, St. Innocent was the only winery that made wine from both sections of the vineyard. AC Pauillac  (XD)  750 mL
(Castéja, Prop.)

Tasting note: A very good example of this under-achieving estate, the 1996's saturated dark ruby/plum color is accompanied by textbook aromas of black currants, smoky new oak, minerals, and tobacco. Well-made, with moderate tannin, excellent purity, and a medium-bodied, ripe, melted asphalt-flavored finish, this seductive Lynch-Moussas should drink well at a young age. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, April 1999)

Tasting note: A terrific value for the vintage, this dense ruby/purple-colored 1998 reveals notes of coffee, mocha, black cherries, and smoke. Fleshy, with a fine texture as well as full body, this is a delicious, hedonistic wine to drink over the next 4-5 years. Value hunters should check out this sleeper. From modest yields of 45 hectoliters per hectare, this blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc is bottled unfiltered by La Doyenne's conscientious producer. It can compete with wines costing five times as much! Score - 89. (Robert Parker, www.erobertparker.com, April 2001)

Tasting note: One of the candidates for the wine of the vintage, Cos d'Estournel's 2001 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, amongst the highest percentage of Cabernet of any recent year ... The color is inky purple and the wine offers up an impressive nose of melted licorice intermixed with camphor, graphite, creme de cassis, blackberry, spice box, and toast. The wine is medium to full-bodied and pure, with superb concentration, a multi-layered texture, and a finish that goes on for close to a minute. There is wonderful sweetness yet profound elegance and length in this terrific 2001! Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. Score - 94-96. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, April 2003)

The grapes for the majority of this wine come from Bonny Doon's vineyard near the Soledad Prison, thus the 'Big House' name here. Although the wine is sold under their 'Italian-style' winery of Ca'del Solo, the wine, according to the winery, is closer in spirit to a Rhône region Crozes-Hermitage.

943142  'ANCIENT VINES' CARIGNANE  2001   $  19.95

Contra Costa County  (XD)  750 mL
(Prod. & Btld. Cline Cellars)

As has been proven in the south of France, Carignan (the Americans add an 'e' to the end of the word) always shows best if the wines have substantial age on the vines. In the case of Cline Cellars, the vines here are over 100 years old. The resulting wines tend to show an excellent balance between fruit and cedar/underbrush tones.

643981  MERLOT  1999   $  34.95

'Great Estates', Sonoma County  (XD)  750 mL
(Prod. & Btld. Kendall-Jackson)

Tasting note: The 1999 Great Estates Merlot is big, complex and structured, exhibiting this varietal's tell-tale chocolate/espresso characteristics along with a medium to full-bodied, powerful, Bordeaux-like personality. It should drink well for a decade or more. Score - 89. (Robert Parker Jr., www.erobertparker.com, Aug. 2002)

Food match: grilled lamb.

677005  SYRAH  2001   $  22.95

Sonoma County  (XD)  750 mL
(Prod. & Btld. Cline Cellars)

The grapes for this bold, fruity and tannic Syrah come from Cline's 'Lazy C' Ranch in the Sonoma County part of Carneros. After fermentation, the wines were transfered to French and American oak (30% of the American were new) for 14 months. A rich wine that will definitely reward mid-term cellaring (4-7 years).

Tasting note: Strong colour; spice, black cherry and licorice aromas lead into a spicy, cedary medium-bodied palate, with considerable elegance; there is just a passing question on the amount of oak. Best 2006-2012. (James Halliday, www.winepros.com.au, Oct. 8, 2002)

Tasting note: Not quite as spectacular as the 1997 and 1999 vintages, but a big improvement over 2000 and well priced considering the quality. Very classy McLaren Vale suppleness, richness and blackberry fruit. It is almost opaque, with a subtler nose than previous years, fine oak integration, with mint, tobacco, cedar notes and a hint of leather. Very bright fruit with a good seam of acid balancing the fine tannin. Very good length. Best 2004 to 2009. Score - 89. (Stephen Thurlow, Wine Access, "First In Line E-Report", May 2004)

954594  PINOTAGE BARRIQUE  2003   $  14.95

WO Coastal Region  (XD)  750 mL
(Lammershoek Winery)

According to local folklore, this farm is called Lammershoek, or 'lamb's corner', because ewes often sought shelter from the local predatory Golden Eagle for themselves and their young lambs in the forests surrounding this property. First planted to grapes around 1750, this acreage has been used for winemaking almost consistently since that day. The sandstone, granite and clay soil is considered ideal for growing and fully ripening Pinotage.

WO Western Cape  (XD)  750 mL
(Boekenhoutskloof)

The wine, a blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Pinotage, 9% each of Syrah and Cinsaut, is named 'The Wolftrap' for the easily misled Europeans who, in the 19th century, set out wolf traps in the Franschhoek region (where this winery is located) to catch wolves that never existed. All the traps managed to do was 'trap' unsuspecting humans.

The winery was founded in 1997 by South Africa's Graham Knox and Bordeaux's Alain Moueix. Searching for a property to grow the grapes and build a winery, they discovered a unique microclimate in the Wellington region with mature vines already planted. It was an unexpected discovery, so it makes sense that they named the winery Siyabonga, in the local Xhosa language it means "we give thanks'.

Blends five grape varieties, delivering aromatic complexity of cranberry, floral notes and black pepper. Medium bodied, supple and balanced with a touch of sweetness. Very good length. Score - 88. (Wine Access, July/Aug. 2004)

Food match: mildly spicy seafood, aperitif.

Tavel rosés are more robust and flavourful than Provence rosés, making them excellent candidates for food matching, especially with herbed chicken dishes and grilled vegetables (eggplant, zucchini and red pepper).

'Cellar Selection', Hawkes Bay  (XD)  750 mL
(Sileni Estates)

Tasting note: The 2003, labelled Saignée (the French term for bleeding unfermented juice off red-wine ferments), was fully barrel-fermented. Light pink/red, with berryish, slightly earthy aromas, it is smooth, raspberryish and slightly nutty, with a dry, rounded finish. A delicious wine ... Score - **** (out of 5). (Michael Cooper, Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines 2004)

Food match: seafood salads, aperitif.

A blend of Pinot Noir (50%), Pinot Meunier (35%) and Chardonnay (15%). Tarlant usually uses wines from two vintages to create their 'Tradition'. On average, the bottles undergo secondary fermentation for four years before disgorgement and the addition of a slightly sweetened dosage. This is a forceful, flavourful Champagne that is an equal partner for braised meat or cassoulet dishes.
