DESSERT WINE

CAVE SPRING INDIAN SUMMER SELECT

LATE HARVEST RIESLING 2014

6

VQA Niagara Peninsula, Ontario

TASTING NOTE: Maturing nicely at this stage,

Cave Spring’s classic Indian Summer riesling offers

caramelized peach and apricot, honeyed flavours,

with saffron and quince (a touch of botrytis in this

vintage perhaps?). The palate is quite sweet and

soft, yet with lively underlying acids. Great length with

plenty of depth of flavour. Complex and intense stuff.

Drink or hold mid-term. Score:

92

CHAMPAGNE

BOLLINGER SPECIAL CUVÉE BRUT

CHAMPAGNE

AC

TASTING NOTE: Impressive concentration, freshness

and purity here. It’s all gently enriched with some

savory, autolysis-driven characters. Truly a modern

classic! Showing attractive spiced-apple, lemon and

pink rose-like florals on the palate, this flows nicely

into white-cherry territory with grilled hazelnuts and

a core of sorbet-like fleshy peaches and lemons.

Great balance. Drink now. Score:

LE MESNIL GRAND CRU BLANC

DE BLANCS CHAMPAGNE 2009

AC

TASTING NOTE: Made from 100% Chardonnay

and bottled in 2010 with 15% of the fruit foregoing

malolactic fermentation, this is serious bubbly with

a complex array of green apple, citrus zest, toasted

nuts and salty-buttery biscuit. Tons of crisp, zippy

acidity carries through the long, lovely finish. A real

stunner, and a great fizz for the Chardonnay fanatics

out there. (Vintages panel, Feb. 2017)

SPARKLING WINE

FEATHERSTONE JOY PREMIUM CUVÉE

SPARKLING 2012

6

Traditional method, VQA Twenty Mile Bench,

Niagara Escarpment, Ontario

TASTING NOTE: This is a stunning example of what

meticulous vinification technique does to showcase

excellent fruit from a top year. This would score well

in a flight of world-class sparkling wine. Persistent

fine-bead bubbles form an admirable mousse infused

with lively aromas of citrus and mineral notes along

with hints of baking bread and orange blossom. A

refreshing attack of lime and zesty lemon interweaves

with ripe pit fruit on the palate persisting through the

lengthy aftertaste – clean and refreshing, balanced

and beautiful. Score:
