UNCORK SOMETHING GREAT • SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2017

BAILLY LAPIERRE RÉSERVE BRUT

CRÉMANT DE BOURGOGNE

Traditional method, AC, Burgundy, France

TASTING NOTE: Really classic gander into the

stoicism of straightforward, easy on the nose, mouth

and eyes Bourgogne fizz. From parcels only 45

minutes as the crow flies from Champagne, if this

isn’t the most consistent producer of such Crémant

I’d like to meet the other. Terrific comfortably tart

chardonnay with the type of personality to act as a

long, smooth finisher ... Drink 2016-2019. Tasted

May and October 2016. Score:

BOTTEGA GOLD PROSECCO

DOC Treviso, Veneto, Italy

TASTING NOTE: As if the gold bottle weren’t striking

enough, what’s inside is impressive, too. Subtle aromas

of apple, pear and citrus zest waft up from the glass.

The palate is light, crisp and elegant with a tangy finish.

Sip this versatile sparkler with apps, green salads,

turkey or seafood. (Vintages panel, April 2016)

BOHIGAS RESERVA BRUT CAVA

Traditional method, DO, Spain

TASTING NOTE: Dusty, leesy aromas of apple and

vanilla are sturdy. This brut Cava is fresh and modestly

elegant on the palate, with lime, apple and tarragon

flavors. A dry, confident finish offers apple and citrus

flavors and a sense of ease. Score:

ONTARIO

FEATHERSTONE CANADIAN OAK

CHARDONNAY 2015

6

VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTINGNOTE: This is made 100%from chardonnay

sourced fromvines planted in 1988. It was fermented in

Canadian oak barrels and aged in them for 12months.

The aromas are pungent and filledwith sweet fruit and

some subtle vanilla/oak notes, an attractive introduction

that leads to an equally attractive palate. There you’ll

find a nicely-nuanced palette of flavours, all well-

defined and layered, togetherwith a refreshing and juicy

texture. Everything’s well integrated and makes for a

delicious and fresh white that’s extremely versatile with

food. It’s ready to go now, and I suggest drinking

it while it’s young and fresh, say to 2019 ... Score:

ROSEWOOD ORIGIN MIMA’S

BLOCK RIESLING 2014

6

VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Escarpment

TASTING NOTE: ... This may just be the most aridity

and brine ever teased from a Mima’s riesling, acidity

coveting sugar notwithstanding, startling from begin-

ning to end, with spirited shots of lime. Underrated and

honest, the consistency of this riesling is possessive

of great triggers and so beautifully defines the mineral

Bench. Early suffocations blowoff with ease and in the

denoument there are crunchy stones ... Mima’s never

really needed an abundance of sugar for balance and

kudos to that. Drink 2017-2022. Score:

creamy and admirably ripe with a crisp edge, showing
