DOMANE WACHAU TERRASSEN

FEDERSPIEL GRÜNER VELTLINER 2015

DAC Wachau

TASTING NOTE: Grassy green hints play with faint

tropical notes of passion fruit. The palate is taut and

fresh and provides that wonderfully phenolic back-

drop that makes Grüner such a success at the table.

There is concentration and ample stores of fruit

underneath that cool exterior, waiting to be plunged

into. Score:

NIKOLAIHOF WACHAU TERRASSEN

GRÜNER VELTLINER 2014

DAC Wachau

TASTING NOTE: This is lean, tight, taut, energetic

and lively Grüner Veltliner from the region’s (and one

of Europe’s) oldest biodynamic producers, since

1970. It’s still in a smoky reductive phase and not

really near prime drinking, even for this great estate’s

entry-level bottling. The palate is perfectly pitched

and finely etched, with very fine length and depth. A

terrific wine at a terrific price, for the purists in the

crowd. Best after 2018. Score:

90

ALSACE

PIERRE SPARR RÉSERVE

GEWURZTRAMINER 2016

AC Alsace

TASTING NOTE: This has a typical intense, perfumed

gewurz nose with all kinds of orange, lychee, spice

and subtle evergreen notes. It is full bodied, very

smooth and soft and a touch sweet on the palate,

with impressive orange and spicy persistence. The

length is very good to excellent, with a hint of sour-

ness under the covers. Chill well. Tasted May 2017.

HAMILTON RUSSELL

ASHBOURNE 2009

WO Hemel en Aarde Valley,

Walker Bay

TASTING NOTE: The 2009 Hemel en Aarde Valley is a

blend of 86%Pinotage, 3.5%of each of the Cabernet

Franc, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot

all raised in French oak for 14 months, half new. It has

a more harmonious bouquet compared directlywith

the previous vintage, with lifted dark cherries, licorice,

star anise and a touch of garrigue. The palate is

medium-bodiedwith ripe, slightly chewy tannins. There

acidity is taut and crisp, cutting through the quite

assertive, masculine blackberry and raspberry fruit. It

feels tightlywound toward the finish and deserves 2-3

years in bottle. Drinking Date: 2017-2025. Score:

90
