UNCORK SOMETHING GREAT • SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2017

CASTELGIOCONDO

BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2012

DOCG

(Frescobaldi)

TASTING NOTE: Fresh, alluring aromas of wild berry,

pressed violet, dark baking spice and a whiff of

new leather all come together in the glass. The firm

full-bodied palate offers ripe black cherry, mature

plum, cinnamon, licorice and a hint of tobacco.

Chewy tannins and bright acidity provide support

and balance. Drink 2019-2027. Score:

ROCCA DELLE MACÌE ZINGARELLI

RISERVA CHIANTI CLASSICO 2014

DOCG

TASTING NOTE: It takes little time to find more ease,

balance and immediately agreeable notions from

the Zingarelli Castellina in Chianti CCR ’14. This is a

wine that belies the vintage and the early to market

release. The fruit is very ripe and supported by

relatively copacetic acidity and tannin. The intention

here is surely geared towards early gratification to

imbibe while so many others gather their collective

2014, Chianti Classico Riserva thoughts. Drink

2017-2020. Tasted February 2017. Score:

SICILY

FEUDO MACCARI SAIA NERO

D’AVOLA 2014

DOC Sicilia

TASTING NOTE: From the Noto area of southern

Sicily, the 2014 Sicilia Saia is a pure expression of

Nero d’Avola that reflects some of the characteristics

of the limestone soils found in the area. There is a

faint mineral vein that runs through this wine. It pulls

together the various elements of ripe fruit and spice.

Despite the opulence and the grandeur of the wine,

it also shows an elegant side that comes in large part

thanks to that mineral definition. This wine is excep-

tionally well balanced and beautiful in this classic

vintage. Drink Date: 2016-2024. Score:

TUSCANY

ANTINORI PIAN DELLE VIGNE

BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2012

DOCG

TASTING NOTE: The sweet cherry and raspberry

flavors set the pace for this supple, charming

Brunello. Leather, tobacco, earth and iron accents

add complexity as this cruises to a terrific finish.

Feels more open, yet this should develop well. Best

from 2020 through 2033. Score:

CARPINETO VINO NOBILE DI

MONTEPULCIANO RISERVA 2012

DOCG

TASTING NOTE: Subtle plum, toast, underbrush and

violet aromas slowly emerge in this Riserva. The firm

palate offers black currant, sour cherry, dried sage

and espresso, while taut, close-grained tannins leave

an assertive finish. Drink 2018-2023. Score:
