SPAIN

– REDWINE

BALBÁS RESERVA 2005

DO Ribera del Duero

Wine & Spirits

magazine awarded this wine a rating

of

92

points (June 2010).

TASTING NOTE: This has an intense nose with

considerable oak resin, burning leaves, vanilla and

ripe cherry. Rather nutty as well. Nicely complex. It

is medium-full bodied, smooth, just a touch sweetish

and warm with generous fruit on the palate. Quite

fine tannin. Excellent length. Needs a year or two,

but has some juicy appeal now. Hard to believe this a

2005. Score:

90

FINCA NUEVA RESERVA 2010

DOCa Rioja

TASTING NOTE: The 2010 Reserva is a varietal

Tempranillo aged for two years in French oak barrels.

2010 was a very balanced vintage and the wine has

reached a level of complexity and depth I had never

seen before in this range. There are balsamic aromas

of incense and cigar box, intermixed with ripe black

cherries and a touch of liqueur, making it quite heady

and hedonistic. The palate is polished and sleek, with

polished, elegant tannins and very balanced acidity.

It feels compact and solid. 60,000 bottles produced.

Drink Date: 2016-2020. Score:

90

– REDWINE

QUINTA DO QUETZAL GUADALUPE

WINEMAKER’S SELECTION RED 2014

Vinho Regional Alentejano

The cosmic crescent shape on this wine’s label is

reminiscent of what many Ontarians observed

through special viewing goggles during this summer’s

solar eclipse – but don’t worry, it actually is safe to

look directly at the bottle with the naked eye. An

unconventional blend of 60% Syrah, 30% Alicante

Bouschet and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in

French oak for 12 months, this spicy, dark-chocolaty,

elegantly structured wine will make a good partner

for blackened chicken in a chili-cocoa sauce.

R DE ROMANEIRA 2014

IGP Duriense

(Quinta da Romaneira)

Taking a cue (or rather, a “Y”) from Château d’Yquem

in Bordeaux, who have dubbed their dry white wine

“Y,” the team behind Quinta da Romaneira has named

this dry red wine “R.” Local grapes Touriga Nacional,

Touriga Franca and Tinto Cão are blended with Tinta

Roriz (Tempranillo) and Syrah to create a complex,

dark-fruited, spicy wine with the structure to pair with

pepper steaks, meaty stews or firm cheeses.

RABELO MOSTEIRO DOURO TINTO 2014

DOC Douro

(Compañía de Vinos del Atlántico)

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Cuvee Mosteiro Tinto,

aged ten months in French oak, is a similar blend to

the 2014 Roman Tinto, but with slightly more Touriga

Nacional and the addition of Tinto Cao. The soils in

the Mosteiro are shale as opposed to slate-dominated

soils of the Cuvee Roman. This is a slightly more

elegant style of wine, opaque purple in color, with

blueberry and raspberry fruit notes, spring flowers,

medium to full-bodied texture, and beautiful purity

and length. Drink now through 2019. Score:

91
