SEIN 2011

DO Alicante

Luis Gutierrez awarded this wine a rating of

92

points. (

, Oct. 30, 2013)

TASTING NOTE: A 60%Mourvèdre/40% Syrah red

blend, fruit was hand-harvested and hand-sorted

before fermentation and malolactic conversion then

aged 12 months in French and American oak barrel

by this artisan, family-owned winery. Black cherry,

baking spice and earthy notes are precursor to a

surge of black cherry, black currant and kirsch

liqueur. It’s medium weight with good texture and

supple tannin frame. Aerate/decant two hours before

serving – terrific value here. Score:

VOLVER SINGLE VINEYARD 2014

DO La Mancha

(Mercedes Rebuelta Lizabe Finca las Cruces)

TASTING NOTE: The 2014 Volver Single Vineyard

comes from a parcel of vines planted in 1957 called

Finca Los Juncares. It is 100%Tempranillo aged

15 months in French oak and bottled unfiltered. It is

a relatively small cuvée of 3,000 cases, but it’s a

stunning wine, with notes of unsmoked cigar tobacco,

licorice and blackcurrants. This opaque purple-

colored wine has a full-body, showing toasty notes

intermixed with blackberry and cassis. It’s a beauty

– an internationally styled, modern version of

Tempranillo to drink over the next 5-6 years. Drink

ONTAÑÓN RESERVA

TEMPRANILLO/GRACIANO 2005

DOCa Rioja

TASTING NOTE: Fruity but also showing saddle,

game and vanilla aromas, this reserva from a top

vintage sees its whole exceeding the sum of its

parts. Full and creamy on the palate, this tastes of

barrel toast and earthy plum and berry. Smooth and

impressive, this is as welcoming as it is complex and

age-worthy. Drink through 2025. Editors’ Choice.
