CONT’D

RHÔNE

DOMAINE DE LA CHARBONNIÈRE

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2013

AP

(Famille Perrin)

TASTING NOTE: This has a brooding feel, with

dark plum, fig and blackberry confiture notes

coiled at the core, while intense licorice snap

and juniper flavors flow through the long,

smoldering finish. Needs time. Best from 2017

through 2028. Score:

92

SOUTHWEST

CHÂTEAU BOUSCASSÉ VIEILLES

VIGNES MADIRAN 2006

AP

TASTING NOTE: Some vines at Bouscassé

are 150 years old, which inevitably give this

wine great depth and concentration. It is hugely

structured, with very rich, intense black-

plum flavors. The tannins are still developing.

GLENFARCLAS 21-YEAR-OLD

HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT

(J&G Grant)

TASTING NOTE: Brilliant copper/bronze color.

Assertive aromas of honey and sherry take

immediate charge and don’t relent through

entire nosing. Taste profile is oily, sherry sweet,

malty, cocoa-like, completely luscious and

decadent. Excellent. Highly Recommended.

COGNAC

JEAN FILLIOUX COQ GRANDE

CHAMPAGNE 1

ER

CRU COGNAC

Gift box, AC, France

TASTINGNOTE: Five years old minimum. Straw

yellow color; to my dismay, lots of tendril like

sediment seen under the examination lamp.

Visual issues aside, the initial whiffs encounter

lovely, melded scent of spiced pear, cardamom

and ripe white grapes ... Grand Champagne

cognac at its fruity, seductive aromatic best.

Entry is intensely grapey, semi-sweet, ripe and

supple; midpalate reinforces the entry juiciness

and youthful vigour. Finishes long, silky,

tarter than I expected, and delicious. Highly

recommended. Score:

FORTIFIED

PORT

FONSECA VINTAGE PORT 2009

DOP, Portugal

TASTING NOTE: ... very sweet, typically

opulent bouquet of black plum, blackberry,

chimney soot and a touch of pencil shavings

that is very complex and alluring. The palate

is full-bodied with powerful ripe blackberry,

allspice, clove and balsamic notes, a roiling,

powerful, assertive Fonseca with a sweet,

dark chocolate-tinged finish that grips the

mouth, but it needs two decades to mellow

and demonstrate the finesse to balance the

intensity. This is a wonderful 2009 Vintage

Port, though I suspect that the 2011 will

ultimately prove even better. Score:
