UNCORK SOMETHING GREAT • SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2017

RHÔNE

CAVE DE RASTEAU

GRANDE RÉSERVE VISAN 2015

AC Côtes du Rhône-Villages

TASTING NOTE: The wines of Visan, a Côtes du

Rhône-Villages appellation since 1966, are famously

finessed and smooth, with a spicy character. This

2015 from Cave de Rasteau suggests dark ripe fruit,

tobacco and spice with a long cedar note on the

finish. A great value, and well made. (Vintages panel,

Nov. 2016)

DOMAINE AUTRAND

CÔTES DU RHÔNE 2015

AC

TASTING NOTE: What an amazing value in Côtes du

Rhône! Plenty of dark fruit, red berries, licorice notes

and balancing acidity here on a plush, easygoing

frame. Pair with burgers or tourtière. (Vintages panel,

FAMILLE PERRIN LES CORNUDS

VINSOBRES 2015

AC

TASTING NOTE: One of two releases from Vinsobres,

which is located in the northern, cooler part of the

Southern Rhône Valley. From higher elevation and

cooler sites, the 2015 Vinsobres Les Cornuds is a

50/50 split of Grenache and Syrah. It should end up

being an outstanding wine and offers lots of black

fruits, pepper and garrigue in a full-bodied, seriously

textured and layered style. Score:

89-91

STÉPHANE AVIRON VIEILLES VIGNES

MOULIN-À-VENT 2014

AC

TASTING NOTE: Be grateful that Stéphane Aviron is

an old-vine hunter. Serious tannins and concentration

from 100-year-old vines give this wine its depth

and richness. It has a great potential to age with black

fruits, a mineral texture and acidity. This is an impres-

sive cru wine, full of both fruit and density. Drink from

2019. Editors’ Choice. Score:

94

DOMAINE CABIRAU SERGE &

NICOLAS MAURY SEC 2014

AP

TASTING NOTE: In 2007, wine importer Dan Kravitz

purchased this 13.5-acre domaine, with grenache

vines dating back 60 years. Today he farms 18 acres,

and works with the local cooperative to vinify his

wines: Serge Soulatge takes care of the vines, and

Nicolas Burger makes the wines. This 2014 blends

60 percent old-vine grenache with new- and old-vine

carignan and syrah. It has a lovely transparency to

its flavors, the richness of the plummy fruit balanced

by fine, ferrous tannins and soft, dark earth. Entirely

pretention-free, this is ready to drink now but also

capable of aging in the cellar for another five to eight

years. Score:

93

GÉRARD BERTRAND SAINT CHINIAN

SYRAH/MOURVÈDRE 2014

AP

TASTING NOTE: Solid, rich and ripe red raspberries

and brambly berries are upfront on the nose of this

attractive wine, with seductive tones of sweet oak

and cured meat in the back. Medium in weight, with

spicy, structured tannins and ample acidity, the oak

is well-integrated into the plush fruit core. Editors’

Choice. Score:

90
