UNCORK SOMETHING GREAT • SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2017

ARDAL RESERVA 2006

DO Ribera del Duero

TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Ardal Reserva sees

24 months in French and American oak and is blended

with a relatively high (20%) of Cabernet Sauvignon.

That addition of Cabernet works well on the vibrant,

graphite-tinged nose with touches of wild heather. The

palate is full-bodiedwith copious, chocolate-tinged

black fruit, offering real presence and grip on the surly

finish. But I like the balance and style, plus it has the

substance to age well. Drink 2013-2020+. Score:

92

CR GOLD 5 MONASTRELL/SYRAH 2013

DO Jumilla

(Crápula)

TASTING NOTE: Powerful blackberry aromas are

matched by creamy oak. This Monastrell-Syrah

blend is a driller, with strong tannins and more than

enough body weight. Oaky flavors of dark-berry

fruits and black plums finish with vanilla and lactic

notes. This is rock solid from head to toe; drink

through 2021. Editors’ Choice. Score:

92

HACIENDA VALVARÉS 2012

DOCa Rioja

(Bodegas Altanza)

TASTING NOTE: Dark ruby. Heady, exotically

perfumed red berry liqueur, floral pastille and

incense aromas are lifted by bright mineral and spice

notes. Silky, sweet and broad on the palate, offering

nicely concentrated raspberry and floral pastille

flavors and a jolt of vanilla. Supple tannins give shape

to the very long, fruit-driven finish, which shows

lingering smoke and allspice notes. This wine was

aged for a year in new French oak barrels followed

by six more months of rest in large oak vats, also

French. Drinking window: 2019-2025. Score:

92

– REDWINE

ABAD DOM BUENO MENCÍA 2013

DO Bierzo

TASTING NOTE: ... a mixture of different plots

fermented in stainless steel and matured in French

and American oak barrels for some nine months.

There is a lactic touch that give it a commercial

profile, making it approachable and a little exuberant,

combined with toasty oak aromas and ripe black

and red berry fruit. There’s one step up in complexity

and balance, with good freshness and juicy fruit.

Approachable now, ideal with food. Drink Date:

2016-2018. Score:
