CAVE SPRING CSV RIESLING 2015

6

Cave Spring Vineyard,

VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment

TASTING NOTE: In a word, balance. Well two, balance

and brilliance ... The fruit is in charge, the mineral a

support system unparalleled and the minor celebratory

sweetness a mere afterthought when it comes to

rounding out the complexity. CSV is pretty darn back

in ancient dolomite time travel and escarpments high

great in 2015, uplifting, serious but yet not so ...

Deep lemon intent and a newwax vernacular speak

the clarity of a wine that listens to its own expert

advice. Might as well have made itself. CSV 2015 is

one of the finest rieslings ever made from Ontario

grapes. Drink 2019-2031. Score:

95

CHARLES BAKER PICONE VINEYARD

RIESLING 2014

6

VQA Vinemount Ridge, Niagara Escarpment

(Stratus)

TASTING NOTE: Riesling is one of the most exciting,

successful varietals in Ontario, and site-specific

examples such as this are turning heads around the

world. Charles Baker has been working with fruit

from the Picone Vineyard on Vinemount Ridge since

2005. The oldest vines were 37 years of age in 2014.

The wine is crisp and beautifully made, with lime,

apple, honeycomb and mineral oil tones. The mineral

note is pitch-perfect. (Vintages panel, Jan. 2017)

FIELDING UNOAKED

CHARDONNAY 2016

6

VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: Fielding always hits the right notes

with this Unoaked Chardonnay. It’s always an excellent

sipping wine that delivers impressive precision, fresh-

ness and lift. The 2016 is floral and lively, with apple,

lemon, pineapple and banana notes with a touch of

lees on the finish. Crisp and balanced, with a fairly rich

texture. Well-made. (Vintages panel, March 2017)

HENRY OF PELHAM ESTATE

CHARDONNAY 2016

6

VQA Short Hills Bench, Niagara Escarpment

This wine has enjoyed a long, happy association with

Vintages customers. A true customer favourite year

in and year out, it never fails to delight and impress.

Look for bold ripe fruit framed by well-applied,

caressing oak tones. This will be a balanced, elegant

wine with additional suggestions of smoke and

buttered toast adding complexity. A great option for

grilled pork.

HIDDEN BENCH ESTATE

CHARDONNAY 2015

6

VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment

TASTING NOTE: Really nice demure and tentative-

ness, shy and beautiful. Perhaps a note of tinned fruit

but be patient. Just what I thought. Tight grains of

wood working this way and that with orchard fruit

green, cutting and biting. Proper bitters and sumptuous-

ness, then length. Tons of tannin. A perfectly broad

expression of chardonnay, at a junction of time, people

and place. Drink: 2018-2022. Score:

92

TAWSE SKETCHES OF NIAGARA

RIESLING 2015

6

VQA Niagara Peninsula

TASTING NOTE: On the lean end of the Sketches line

with more intent to knock your socks off. Sketches

is incredibly consistent essential Niagara riesling and

this ’15 takes a bit of a risk-reward departure into

that flinty, piercing netherland. As always it’s the push-

pull of juice-zest lemon into lime marking the dominant

flavours. Tart hath no fury like a Sketches and its scorn.

This is the one to age and watch the development,

alongside and in contrast to singular expressions Quarry

Road, Limestone and Carly’s Block. Drink 2017-

2020. Score:

91
