UNCORK SOMETHING GREAT • SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2017

WINES OF SUBSTANCE

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2015

Washington

(Charles Smith)

TASTING NOTE: One of the best values I’ve tasted

in a long time, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon from

the team at K Vintners was hand-harvested, natively

fermented and aged all in French oak. Smoking good

notes of cassis, black currants and hints of plum

all emerge from this rich, beautifully textured, layered

beauty that has solid tannic grip, a silky, elegant

texture and a great finish. It has real elegance and

finesse and is a dark fruited, unctuous beauty to drink

over the coming 3-4 years. Drink date: 2017-2021.

BENMARCO EXPRESIVO 2015

Uco Valley, Mendoza

TASTING NOTE: Deep bright ruby. Pungent aromas

of blackberry, cassis, violet and licorice, plus a

suggestion of crushed rock. Juicy and fine-grained,

with a slightly green quality keeping the wine under

wraps today. Finishes with a strong but fine dusting of

tannins and repeating minerality. This wine is still

a bit clenched and green and needs time to unwind.

But does it have the depth to repay patience?

CALLEJÓN DEL CRIMEN

GRAN RESERVA MALBEC 2014

Uco Valley, Mendoza

(Finca La Luz)

TASTING NOTE: 100%Malbec. A big, bold, concen-

trated style with bright plums, raspberries, violets

and a spicy hint. Medium to full bodied, with a good

minerality underpining the lavish dark fruits, firm

tannins and well-integrated oak, making for perfect

poise. Great length of flavours, a wine for the cellar.

CHATEAU STE. MICHELLE

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2015

Special 50th anniversary bottling,

Columbia Valley

This magnum-sized bottle features a replica of the

label from Chateau Michelle’s first vintage.

TASTING NOTE: For Cabernet, the aromas are

surprisingly blue and purple fruited, almost smelling

more like a Syrah. Putting that aside, it brings a lot

of appeal with a real sense of freshness to the fruit

flavors. The tannins seem a bit bunched up at present,

needing a little more time to stretch out. Still, it

provides plenty of enjoyment. Score:

HOGUE RESERVE

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2013

Columbia Valley

TASTING NOTE: Crafted from 84% Cabernet

Sauvignon sourced from select Cabernet sites

including Dionysus and Fries, and 16%Malbec from

Andrews Vineyard. This suggests red fruit, currant,

cedar and spice in a supple, well-framed package.

Enjoy this with barbecued ribs slathered in sauce.

SONGBIRD LYRICAL RED 2014

Columbia Valley

TASTING NOTE: Washington continues to impress

and delight with wines such as this that offer

amazing quality and value. Rich and meaty with ripe

red fruit and suggestions of chocolate, cassis and

spicy oak. Well-made and balanced, with firm

tannins. This gives superb insight into the continuing

evolution and excitement to be found in the red

wines of Washington. (Vintages panel, Feb. 2017)
